What Is The Best Watercolour Paint Palette? - Kuretake, Culture Hustle, Winsor & Newton...

  • In today's video I'm finding out what is the best watercolour paint palette, by testing a bunch of different watercolour paint palettes from various brands including: Kuretake, Culture Hustle, Winsor & Newton, Derwent, Coliro and some unbranded palettes. Going into this watercolour paint test I didn't think there would be a huge difference in the watercolour paints, however I found some of the palettes to be significantly better than the others! I absolutely loved the Japanese Kuretake water colour paint, I also found The Worlds Colouriest Water Colour palette by Culture Hustle to be really great, and for a more affordable option the Derwent Academy watercolour paint palette was really decent considering it was the cheapest paint on the list. But all the watercolour paint palettes I tested out today definitely weren't that bad, and I wouldn't be disappointed to receive either of them! But let me know what your thoughts were on me finding out what is the best watercolour paint palette, and whether you disagree with any of the placements I chose!

I started watercoloring with the cotman set. It's pretty decent for student grade paint. I didn't like the default colors it came with though. My cotman set only had cadmium red and yellow instead of having a bias version of each primary (like a blue-ish red and a yellowish red) so mixing colors to a perfect match was a pain.
The japanese watercolors use better binding agents and a better pigment to binder ratio than western colors, which is why it's so lovely to put on paper. I'm used to garbage though so when I got a set of Kuratake I didn't end up using it much.
You should do another paint along video like you did with acrylics, but with a youtuber who specializes in watercolor. Look for someone who does a lot of wet on wet and lifting paint.

@@AnthonyCrammen I recommend the channel let's make art ...they do alot of beginner watercolor tutorials and they even sell kits of the supplies for the paintings. I have done few of the watercolor paintings on there with my own supplies and have had alot of fun and sucess. (They even provide free traceables to print if you have problems drawing like me 😆). The art sherpa has a separate watercolor channel as well that has been fun to paint too (she has a main channel that does acrylic paintings that I have recommended to you before)

The Japanese watercolors are more opaque then regular watercolors. They almost have gouache properties. There are 101 total colors of the Kuretake Gansai Tambi. They include pearlescent, gem, graphite, starry and opal “specialty” colors along with art nouveau and the more “normal” colors. 24:13
Another Japanese company that uses the same large sized pans, an “feels” like the Kuretake paints are the Boku Undo Sumi-E watercolor paints. They have, I think, 3 separate pans of 6 colors. My favorite ones are the shadow black set. Very moody and wonderful for shadows.
One thing that you didn’t notice or comment on is that the Japanese type paints, above, dry VERY quickly and so you really need to go back over layers only after the paint is completely dry. That is, unless you want to have the blooms appear.

Ant the Kuretaki Hansi Tambi paints you gave first place to, are stunning paints!
I totally agree with your listing, although I feel that maybe you shouldn't have included any metallics, because they are kind of niche items really. Maybe you could do a list of metallics on their own one day? Those cheaper paints are a complete waist of money and nearly put me off painting because of the poor results I was getting each time I tried to paint. I thought the bad results were my fault, but I got a decent set of paints as a gift a few year ago and I've never looked back! Cheap paints are an awful waste of money and a false economy and aren't a saving at all, because you have to use more paint to get any result. Whereas with decent paints, you only need to use a little. Thanks for the video Ant, it was good fun as always. God bless you hun!

I think it doesn't make much fun only painting the colours next to each other, and I guess it doesn't feel like much fun either.
Maybe try more playing with the colours, how individual colours run into each other and create new ones. 😉
Mix a few colours together in the palette and see what comes out.
Or paint colours on the paper, let it dry for a short time and go over it with another colour
and see how the colours change when one colour meets another colour that has dried.
From this you can also find out how well the colours mix and how they can be layered and whether the lower dried colour comes off when a new moisture is applied,
in short, to explore the handling of the colours.
I think that's always the most fun for me when I get new colours to paint, much more than just painting the colours in the order on a sheet of paper.😊

I find joy in blending colors together to get the shade I need to paint a picture.
As someone who's done art for about a decade, I find that I don't have to buy the most expensive of any item. It is about the results I get, not the price I paid for the supplies.

the kurekate watercolours are honestly some of the most gorgeous watercolours i've ever used, they make metallics too that are a lot cheaper than some other brands of metallics and they're so versatile because their pans are designed to let water pool and sit in them - use it immediately and it's a shimmer, but leave it to sit for 2-4 minutes and it becomes really opaque. highly rec them if you've never used 'em. (iirc you can also buy individual pans for the main green case paints, too!)

  • @bellastname1244

I've wanted to try the gansai tambi paints. I hear they are a bit more opaque than most other watercolors but that they are lovely. A highly desired thing in most watercolor paints is transparency, and a lot of cheaper paints have filler in them that makes them less transparent and harder to layer. Gansai tambi are almost a step closer to gouache from what I have heard, and not the same as a lot of other watercolor paints that are opaque due to a lack of quality. They just function a bit differently than a lot of other watercolor paints.
I have the culture hustle palette, and I like it a lot! It was a gift from my friend. If you do another watercolor comparison someday, seeing how they lay over a black line is a good way to test how transparent they are, if you're into that sort of thing. Also it can be good (especially with metallic watercolor paints) to use something like that pipette to drop water on the pans first and let them sit for a little bit to get all reactivated first.
A big difference between a lot of cheap watercolor paints and pricier ones is whether they are dye or pigment based (dye is usually less lightfast), and if they are pigment based, how much pigment is in there versus filler. Often with student/cheaper sets you can't get the pigment/lightfast information at all.
This was a really fun video, I like watching videos of people trying out new art supplies and comparing them, and not every comparison video needs to be anything other than 'Well I like this one more because I like it more'.

    • @AnthonyCrammen
      @AnthonyCrammen  2 года назад +1

Yeah the Japanese palette was much more opaque than regular watercolours, I guess you could always thin them down more using more water than normal but they're definitely not your average watercolour for sure! But glad you enjoyed it! I'll keep that little line trick in mind for next time 😁

This video was like watching paint dry without the benefit of the fumes. If like me you like watching paint dry, trying playing it at 0.25 speed it lasts for 2 hours. :)

Derwent usually does mostly pencils so I’m glad a school paint set held up to Cotman. Kuretake is a gorgeous palette, and a bit different from Western watercolour. I agree with too many colours being annoying. The shimmers are beautiful and I’ve bought a few but rarely use them, I’m not so decorative with sparkliness I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

This was a weird video that had scholastic to student grade to handmade to professional grade pallets lol so they can’t really be compared to each other especially Japanese palette since they are more opaque to transitional transparent watercolor paints. Still nice video to watch

Thank you for doing this video!
Just so you know, companies cover the paints to protect the light fastness and pigment of the paint. Higher quality paints usually come with something to protect the paints.

No problem Amber! Ah really?! I didn't think it would do anything to a dry pigment, although I have no idea about making paint 😆😆

No worries! I didnt know anything about it until recently! I'm not sure how it works exactly but I know it is to protect them.

You haven’t happened to make lightfastness test with those swatches, by any chance? It’s another important quality and can influence price, so it would be interesting. I’ve heard that the lightfastness quality of kuretake paints have really went down compared to older batches and is very bad now, but I have nothing to compare to. Its still very worrying in such an expensive, proffesional grade product.

You should spray the watercolors with water first to activate them better. Might help with the initial swatches.

Hey Colette, there's a video somewhere on my channel from last year I think, when I went through my old art porfolio from my college days, it might be worth having a look although I didn't have all my artwork 😔

My screen shows up the differences in the concertina box. Not that subtle, and you'd notice them on actual paintings.
I love the one on black!
I love the Japanese one, too.
I was in our local Aldi the other week and said no to their watercolour sets......but now I'm actually considering them for something to try with my grandchildren!
    Your fault, Ant 🤣 xx

Oh well in person they looked pretty much exactly the same, it's sometimes hard to show true colours on camera due to lighting. Well Aldi has some pretty good stuff in there, enjoy your painting days! 😆😆

I have been holding off on getting karataki ( prob spelled wrong ) because of money and may not be archival. Derwent one looked really cool too . 😎 I hate those wrappers . I slice them with a razor blade like a bad ass.

Oh it was such a lovely palette though! I'd highly recommend it when you get some spare cash (I'm not sponsored with them at all 😂😂) The Derwent one was really nice and definitely won't damage the bank balance lol! Oh they took me ages to get through!! 😆😆

I have the windsor and newton one and ya ..I was disappointed. I was so excited to get it and it's kinda meh. I've seen other cool looking kuretaki supplies like their white paint pen looks really nice. Check out Shibasake a Japanese artist who does the most amazing watercolors and also tests out cheap art supplies he's 84 and such a sweetie. I got the water colour pallette because of him. He uses squeezie tubes which I wish I knew about before I bought a pan set. Those kuretaki colors look amazing 👏👏👏

The Japanese set are a different product, for a different market. It's not for making watercolor paintings, it's for card making. It shouldn't be getting compared to these other pallets - they do different things.

    • @AnthonyCrammen
      @AnthonyCrammen  2 года назад +3

I'm sorry but that's completely not true! Look online and you'll see this paint palette used for paintings, even on their official website you see images of them using it for proper watercolour paintings so I see no reason why it shouldn't be compared to the rest.
