- The Best of the Black Hills, South Dakota- Spearfish Canyon and the hike to Roughlock Falls near Lead and Deadwood, SD. Here's an idea of something to do to spend a great day flying solo, traveling as a couple or vacationing as a family in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Roughlock Falls was the perfect hike with a beautiful place to picnic along the river only a few miles down the road.

To a desert dweller like me, the sight and sound of rushing water is almost exotic. Add in all the beautiful greenery and it’s beyond exotic! I’m so jealous. What a wonderful time to spend with the grandkids.

Native South Dakotan here… it’s pronounced Leed even though it is spelled Lead. Love the Black Hills! Thanks for visiting. Roughlock falls is a short but good walk to do with the grandkids. Don’t miss Custer State Park and Sylvan Lake/Needles. Vanocker Canyon is also a local favorite scenic drive…eat breakfast at Cheyenne Crossing!

Oh wow. The waterfall area looked amazing. There were so many different little waterfalls flowing over the moss and cave. You guys have a wonderful family. 👍

FYI: the town of Lead is pronounced not like the metal, but the lead as in leader. My Mom grew up there.
I guess when I saw a mine near the town my mind went to mining ore so I pronounced it the wrong way. ;) Thanks for watching and letting me know.
