  • This video covers my experience with the dreaded Dartitis. I go through how it developed - what happened, and how a patient and specific approach got me through it.
    Annoyingly, I missed out some photos in the edit so there are parts missing!
    What worked for me won't work for everyone - but there may be parts of this that can help you if you're struggling!
    If you are watching this and have it, or have overcome it, please leave a comment describing your experiences and advice - there may be someone out there that needs to hear it!

    I really recommend anyone suffering from Dartitis to get as close the board as possible (just a bit over 1 meter) and try just to release the dart. If the dart still doesn't leave your hand, try closing your eyes or turning off the lights so that you can't even see the board. You are so close that you are never gonna miss the board completely anyway.
    If your throw and release feel any better with this technique, keep practicing from that very close distance about 10 minutes and try to hit some doubles or trebles also. After you start hitting some, move just a couple of inch further and keep throwing. Keep moving very slowly further and further as long as your throw feels natural.
    If you move too far and the Dartitis strikes again, move back to the same spot that you originally started and get comfortable again with your throw and keep moving little by little further and further away from the board. Eventually you reach the spot where you would normally throw and your Dartitis is cured.
    This technique cured my Dartitis but I can't say it will work on everyone. I still recommend to give it a go.

    I have/had dartitis for about 5 years. I switched my throw and tried lots of different techniques to beat it over the years but it was always came back and could feel it there in the my head waiting to strike. I watched your video about 6 weeks ago and did what you said about not shifting eye focus. It was a virtually a instant fix for me. I can even go back to my old throw where I used to get stuck with the dart in my hand and couldn;t let go. Thank you so so much for posting and sharing your ideas.

    Started playing darts in the late 70s in about 1995 dartitis hit in the middle of a weekend tournament, didn't know what to do practice wasn't helping, so I seeked help back then from a magazine called Bullseye news and dr. Alan Goldberg wrote weekly articles on how to get rid of Dartitis. So I called him up paid the fee the first thing he said was look at the board close your eyes and throw the dart and let me know how that felt, I told him it felt simple, then he asked me to throw a dart left-handed so I did that which wasn't that hard as others have mentioned dim the lights a lot after all that it didn't fix everything but it did definitely helped my game although it still wasn't completely solved and eventually I learned from Reading other dartitis forums the 1-2-3 system which helped the most and I still use it today 67 and still playing leagues. So through a combination of tips I seem to have got through, although having a drink or two seems to take some edge off also. Good luck

    I was your friend in the pub, couldn't let go of it. It was heartbreaking. People who had no idea what it was or that it was even a thing were laughing, but for those of us who have been through it, it really wasn't/isn't funny at all.
    I've just about come through it now (taken best part of 20 years on and off) by completing reworking my throw/pre-throw triggers. I'll never be as good as I was, but I can at least play a few legs against my son.

    I have been struggling with dartitis for the last 4/5 years. At the start of it i couldn’t release the dart and even when I did it was way of target. I also tried throwing the dart like a knife and not worry where it landed on the board just to get my arm going again, it did help to an extent. I will be definitely using your advice and concentrate on the board, as I now know I was focusing to much on the dart. Thanks

    Well done and thanks for sharing your experience, thankfully I haven't suffered from it, but when I think back to when I was playing everyday and using the point to aim my darts, maybe that caused me to stress too much and became upset when the darts flew into the wrong section's, having recently picked up a set of darts after some 40 year's, I'm glad to find words of encouragement from people like you, who share there experiences, thank you and good luck with your darts 👏

    I’ve had the dreaded dartitis for over 8 years. I literally tried everything. However due to lockdown I decided to put the board up again. I was like yourself, I was rated a top player in the league, was winning tournaments and was selected for the county. Then as you’ve said I started changing flights, stems, stance, grip, darts the whole lot. It’s only now I realised that’s what started it. It was literally the most frustrating thing ever. I was at the dartboard before the dart was haha. I had it really bad. But....this is the first time since then that I’ve been able to let the darts go, I’ve been practicing in low lighting, throwing ping pong balls etc and just concentrating on my thrown. Over the last few months I’ve seen my darts go from hitting the wall to punching 100’s, 140’s & I’ve managed to hit a few 180’s!! Don’t get me wrong I still throw the odd stray darts. Last few weeks I’ve really concentrated on the double shooting and grouping, seems to have had an impact on my scoring. However.....this last two days I’ve noticed every so often my darts are straying left to the 5 & 12. Only seems to happen when throwing for the 20’s. any advice or tips on how to rectify this??

    I have noticed this creep into my game with one of my darts landing out of the board just outside the nine, I think it’s the pressure of wanting to be better, it has not got a grip of me yet thankfully so I am watching videos of it as sort of a line of how it can creep in and deal with it. I guess if I let my brain know it exists then the pressure will not build and I can deal with before it happens. This is a big help and a great video, well done m8 am sure this will help many many people 👍

    I thought I had a problem with my shoulder, but after watching this video my story is almost identical to yours. First dart often hits triple 20, second dart will randomly hit single 6 or worse. I could feel my wrist twitching when I tried to let go.
    I am glad you have posted this video and overcome it. I hope I can get over it too because I love darts and don't want to give it up, but going from a 75 average to a 30 average is just not a good feeling at all.

    I am living exactly the same experiences as yours..I got dartitis in July 2020...the first weeks I was totally unable to throw, then I started releasing the darts but with bugs similar to yours, throwing at the triple 20 and hitting single 2s. It has really destroyed my game. However, I recently started following your advice of just looking at the board and keeping the dart away from my right eye. This is helping me a lot and I'm seeing small improvements every single day. If it will solve my problem, thank you very much for the information you gave us!

    At the end of the day, if they've managed to get to the top without ever having been given a tip for how to throw, then it demonstrates the importance of practise over worrying too much about technique.

    Thanks for telling us about your experience. I lived and breathed darts back in the 1970s. I recall watching Indoor League through a shop window during a snow storm. I practiced or played six hours a day and then went out in the evening to play. For a few years I hit a minimum of seven maximums a day. Played Superleague and had some very memorable moments. I recall having won a couple of area qualification competitions for the Embassy and this night was the area final. I practiced during the afternoon for several hours as usual and all was well. I arrived in good time and had no idea who I was playing, nor care. I went on stage that night and played like someone who had never picked up a dart in his life! I continued trying and putting in the hours only to add to my despair. To my mind it was like walking over the edge of a cliff. It wasn't the embarrassment, though there was some but losing my love. A few years later I took up archery and got into the top 50 UK archers in my first year. Soon after I was county champion and open champion of another county. Some people are very competitive and must win. I chose darts and archery because your destiny is in your hands. Anyway and finally I come to how I conquered the big D. I moved to SW France many years later and someone gave me an old fashioned staple dartboard. I mounted it outside at the correct height depending on where you are standing. The ground slopes away to the right. Knowing that I couldn't possibly be in the correct position there was no pressure, I could only do my best. I have since built a bespoke oche and have managed three in the bull on a championschoice.

    Haven't got dartitis, but I have limited my practice sessions to no more than 20-30 minutes at a time. I still throw 4 or 5 sessions when I can but I was throwing 2-3 hours straight and putting up 7,11, and 26s with a treble 20 every few days. I also adapted my throw to a more relaxed pull similar to yours. Now I hit a treble 20 every 2 or 3 quills. And my arm doesn't hurt the next day!

    Great video Bryn. Something as simple as “look at where you are throwing” can work wonders. In my experience (from golf & football) focussing on the target only and letting your natural instinct take over can help clear your mind of all the technical barriers and apprehensions your brain is trying to throw at you. Proper technique awareness is everything in anything in life. Don’t overlook small mistakes in your approach or technique like you mentioned. Everything has to be right. Sometimes it helps to break it down. Go stand near the board throw 3 darts in 20 then take a step back do the same until you get to the throw line. If you miss one dart go back to in front of the board, it helped me. Straight arm movement. Release with speed and confidence. Let instinct do the rest

      I do something very similar. When I feel myself start to steer the dart rather than just throw it, I have to remind my body how a real throw feels. So I get close to the board and might even close my eyes for a few throws, just feeling that commitment to the release. I gradually step back to the throw line over several more rounds.

  • @tomg3833
    @tomg3833 3 года назад +1

    A lot of problems are caused by the interference of our self 1 thinking system with our self 2 which is what you're alluding to. I recommend reading The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey. The hand-eye coordination principles are similar in these two sports and you basically need to train your subconscious and then trust in it especially in pressure situations. People lose their ability when their thinking mind takes over. This explains why golfers miss simple puts or world class strikers miss penalties in crucial penalty shoot outs. Imagine thinking about riding a bike consciously and you'd probably fall off yet our trained subconscious is able to do it automatically.
    I recently got back into darts after 10 years and spent the first few weeks just throwing and getting the rhythm back. A few practical things I enjoyed were using tape to divide the board into quarters and throwing at each quarter (therefore not really 'aiming' but just training my technique). I also practised throwing with my eyes closed. If you have dartitus then try this in your warm up: get into position at the oche, look at the board but then close your eyes, take a breath and throw with a smooth graceful action. You'll be amazed at how centrally the darts hit the board!

      Ive only been playing darts for a year. But couple of weeks ago realised ive got dartitis when I was struggling to bring my darts back enough to propel them. Switched to lefty a couple of weeks and improving every day. Darts go in at same angle which was never happening as a righty recently. Release feels smooth. Struggling to keep my arm straight in pull back though. It kind of slants off to the left. Enjoying it though. Definitely recommend to anyone struggling

      I noticed alot of ppl with dartitis would rather quit than shoot with the opposite hand. So kudos to you for switching hope it works out for you.

    I got dartitis when I was 16, I had a season in my local pub team and not long after, the older players were giving me praise and saying how good I am but I took this as more of a negative as I was putting loads of pressure on my self to be good all the time which started the snatching until I couldn’t even let the darts go, I am 19 now and still struggle a lot with it, I feel like I am trying everything however nothing seems to be working. it is so frustrating to snatch every dart into the board and not be the player I was turning into.

    I dont have Daritis but focusing on the treble etc is a great tip, im starting up again after a good 15 year break and consistency is the major thing for me.....I can get 100/140 in 3 darts but then get 2 treble ones and a single one or 26 the next 3 darts

    About a week or so ago I thought I had it as I had no control over where my darts where going and just like you it was because I was trying to perfect my throw, I think I’ve managed to get rid of it by throwing quicker so that I don’t have the time to think about what I’m doing so the darts just flow naturally

    • @DartsClass
      @DartsClass  4 года назад +1

      100%. No matter your style of throw, throwing naturally and focusing your sight on the target only is the way forward. A clear and simple strategy is the way forward. Don't over complicate!

    When I throw my arm sometimes spasms to the left or right, could that be a type of dartitis, or is it just from pressure or playing too much or just a general snatch?

    I’m definitely going to try the things talked about. The one thing i was wondering about is how do you aim your dart. Do you set a specific part of your dart or hand on the location you are aiming for and then pull back the dart or what do you do?

    • @DartsClass
      @DartsClass  4 года назад +2

      I look at a target on the board, normally top wire of t20 and really focus on the target, the dart itself just stays in my peripheral vision, all my focus is on the target until all 3 are in the board

    I dont know if its dartitis but since like 5 months ago i started rolling my darts to into the single nine's, a month later right before competition started i changed stances and throws and during my match i still could hit some 20's but i also got darts in the 3 segment and in the 19's thrown at 20. Now that is over but i still got some darts rolling in the 9 or 14's. Is this dartitis?

Played through it, i can throw my arm an dart but the set up is still very iffy . . . As soon as i set up i hit my chin with the flight soooooo 🤬

    I'm having a total nightmare at the minute , I actually did what you did after playing well I thought I can up this a bit so started watching all the best throwers techniques and most held there arm up in the air for a second or two then release , I'm naturally ( from first dart ) like a pendulum where it's I lift my arm and throw in one movement , why oh why did I ever change , I actually can play well on my day but the now has been the absolute worst , I feel like a tit on the board as sometimes my arm won't move at all, I lift it up then I freeze its so frustrating , and to make things worse I feel like I ruin other players games as I'm stop start it's absolutely horrible , what I I'm trying to do just now is keep it one fluent motion like my first throw , it actually works good for a spell but for some reason my brain is drifting it back to the throw that I trained my brain to change to 🤮 , then it's freeze again , to people that don't throw they laugh " ha dartitis " if they only knew how frustrating it is , I'm 100 % over thinker in everything I do so definitely that's my problem , I wish I never tinkered and just threw the way i natural l was meant to do , it's good to hear that I started washing it back to the start before I saw this vid so hopefully I'm on the right path but probably the worst it's ever been last week , thanks for the vid , hope all you fellow darters with this bastard of thing kick it's ass. Goodluck lads and lassies
    Ps please send me any tips you feel that has helped you it would be much appreciated 🎯

  • @LukeT84

    I don't have dartitis and I never have but I am quite a fast player so sometimes darts will slip out my hand and go all over the place. I'll get a 180 followed by a bullseye when I'm aiming for the 60. Then I start questioning everything I do. Walk to the oche thinking is my stance right, my grip is all over the place and I overthink everything! Then I just turn the light off for a bit. Not so it's pitch black but so the board is awfully lit and you can just see the trebles. Have a few throws at it and I'm back to normal. Not saying it will help anyone with dartitis but throwing at a very poorly lit board gets me to stop thinking and just throw. I think overthinking and over-analyzing is very dangerous.

      Spot on luke. The friend I mentioned in this swears the only way he can throw is to dim the lights really low, and it resets his throw. The general consensus is over thinking is a trigger. Thank you for your comment, I hope someone here tries it and gets results 👍🎯

      @@DartsClass I really like Wayne Mardle but I think his constant over analysing is dangerous for many. Tips on action are great for some but can be disastrous for natural players. I know telling someone with dartitis to just throw is stupid and annoying but sometimes you have to go back to basics. Low light is my tip. Low light and just throw for the general area again. I can't claim it works as I have never had it but I know a few who have and they all said it helped them. It works for me to get back to a fluid style after a couple wayward ones. Great channel. Subbed with the bell on.

      @@LukeT84 legend mate! Thank you. Wayne's stuff is great for those who want to know the strictly technical side of darts, but the same as you, I worry general players psychology it will be too much and over complicated, taking away from players natural throw. That's what happened to me for sure... Went searching for glory when it was going well anyway!
