This is often said to be the greatest concert video ever filmed and I agree. Not surprising as the guy who directed it went on to make the multi oscar winning Silence of the lambs.
*Was the most rented VHS video of the entire 80s decade* Filmed over three consecutive shows: Day one from Stage Left, Day two Stage Right and last day from back of concert hall. Why we seldom ever see the many cameras filming on stage.
@@muffinamy83 Fun Fact: when first released in theatres, many *shut it down* mid showing due to fear upper balcony would collapse from people on their feet dancing. (thanks Matt)
David Byrne has said that the suit came about because “I like symmetry; geometric shapes. I wanted my head to appear smaller and the easiest way to do that was to make my body bigger". He's also said the polyester made him sweat profusely onstage and that when he later put the suit in the washer-dryer, it shrunk to the point that it became unwearable.
For that fun, funky Bass line, you can thank Ms. Tina Weymouth. Although she is playing it on a synth, instead of her regular ax. You guys should react to the whole "Stop Making Sense" concert film. Got to see the same show about a month before this event was filmed, a very cool show to have seen live.
Oh yeah! When I was about 11, in '83 or '84, I heard this tape, Speaking In Tongues (along with Subterranean Jungle by Ramones) and I was so hooked. TH sounded like the Future and Ramones sounded like a future take on the past. They both got signed at CB-GB and have been friends since mid 70's!
40+ years after Talking Heads hit the scene, folks are still unraveling their artistic genius. They were a great band and one of the few from the 80s that are truly timeless.
That tight live sound was in large part because the Heads added Bernie Worrell (co-founder of Parliament/Funkadelic), Alex Weir (arrangement genius of Brothers Johnson) and Edna Holt and Lynn Mabry of Parliament/Funkadelic and She-Funk to their touring band along with percussionist Steve Scales. The concert film of this tour is excellent.
This was an awesome band. They were one of the original New Wave bands in the late 70s moving into superstardom in the 80s. They developed out of the experimental Post-Punk period where New Wave took an upbeat direction, while melancholy types moved into Gothic music.
@@mournblade1066 That's true. I should have said that they grew out of Punk and became part of the developing Post-Punk scene that would later divided into various genres (New Wave, Goth, No Wave, etc.).
The whole concert film is a fantastic performance piece and is being rereleased in theatre briefly this year. The keyboard/synth player is Bernie Worell from Parliament Funkadelic - so there’s thst!
Hip Hop has been more influenced by New Wave, and Techno, then you realize, even Rap with its use of samplers, drum machines and Synths were heard in Techno way before and the Bass player of Talking Heads lead the way with her side project TOM TOM CLuB and its hit My Boyfriend
True! They did influence each other as well, growing up in same underground clubs. New wave punk, post-punk and early rap. Same for Ska/reggae. That's where a lot of the blending and fusions came from. Ska-punk, techno , electro funk, techno punk, etc. They all have good bass guitars too, dancy. Funky influences too.
Lex, oh my, I think you totally nailed it at the end regarding the way he was dancing and maybe wearing his father's suit he was basically exaggerating and pantomiming and just taking pop-culture mames in away to an extreme. But for context, it's even better than what you're thinking. It's even better than that, laugh. Which is a line in the song about his girlfriend, sorry But anyway, if you watch the whole concert, before this has put on this Giant weigh oversized suit for him with the shoulder pads and he's dancing exactly the same way and it is so surreal and weird and funny and unnerving which is what they were all about. All about. That plus really fascinating addictive grooving music.
I think new wave was more of a deliberate attempt to do something new and different than a organic development. That's hard to do and be commercially viable. So if it'll play in the disco and it has interesting visuals for MTV, it can get promoted.
I saw the movie last night at a big theater in Brooklyn. Then the band came out and did a Q&A with Questlove. It was such a fun night. The whole way through the movie the audience was dancing and clapping and singing along.
Don't usually like Talking Heads? What? Lex usually loves new wave music . That was weird to hear. lol. She liked "Burning Down the House" from their first new wave stream last year (Jan/Feb 2022) and "Psycho Killer". Also liked the tom Tom Clubs , Talking Heads side band. Songs like "Genius of Love". This song on a Halloween party playlist? Hhmm, maybe. Its fun and kinda dark. lol But this is on the more upbeat spectrum of new wave/post-punk. I could see where Oingo Boingo (new wave) "Weird Science" gets thrown in there. . Darker, moodier new wave/post-punk would be darkwave, gothic stuff like Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsee and the Banshees, The Cure, Clan of Xymox, Joy Division, Killing Joke, Lene Lovich, etc. New wave is dance music, yall correct.
I guarantee that if you were in the audience for this and the Stop Making Sense tour, you wouldn't be sitting in your chair. Lex, there's nothing to figure out about this band. They were hands down the best new wave group of all time. David Byrne is a genius who just looks at the world differently and is a great lyricist vocalist and a supreme showman . Then add in Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, two highly talented musicians in their own right who later went solo with The Tom Tom Club and had a massive hit with Genius of Love in 1981, which I know you heard. Don't analyze, just enjoy their creativity and energy!
One thing I super-appreciate is when a songwriter puts things into words in a manner I have never heard before. With Talking Heads an example that's stuck with me since it came out was in Home, "You've got a face with a view." What? Oh! I love looking at your face! Tom MacDonald recently came out with Ghost and the line, "I wanna be with you, 'cause I'm me with you," is just as memorable. I'm me with you ... aww! Pretty much all of Talking Head's lyrics are that way, not clear when you first hear it, then, suddenly, you "get" it.
I coached high school football for 16 yrs. And everyday on my way in to practice in my top down 69 Bronco I would rip this song. Every kid that walked by either smiled laughed or started to shimmy. That was 2004. The Heads are timeless.
