Possibly thee best and underrated talents of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and would you believe their Scottish as well so what’s not to like about this classy tune from back in the day.I’m now 66 and listened to Hue and Cry every day back then without doubt a Scottish supergroup.
I first saw H&C on TV one lunchtime in 1986/87. Pebble Mill at One with Judy Spiers. They were singing Labour of Love. Brilliant song, but this one is my favourite of theirs. The lyrics are so applicable to my struggles with debt back then.

I think you summed it up perfectly, “Too sophisticated to be a huge hit”... the curse of a unique talent is to not have truly broad appeal...quality over quantity every time

Saw them at Sheffield students union bar on Seduced Abandoned tour. Great band, great drummer, Tony McCracken. Tony wasn’t on the second album containing this song. Wonder what happened to him

My favorite song from Hue & Cry is Guy On The Wall. Although finding it in Ultra HD is difficult. I went to Spotify and they have the Ultra HD version, but I can't download it without getting Premium. Otherwise, I love this song. It's the perfect way to start a very good album!
Loved this song back in the day think it could do with a 2023 re record... I know what I would do with the mix , it also sadly suffers from the 80s fade out needs a proper ending 35 years old prime for a vinyl 7inch a side original bride or aa side re recording
@@80ssynthfan48 yep...I had it on cassette because my mom bought it it when she died practically everything went...my Nan called the wrong people...she thought they were removal but they were the wankers you call to get rid of stuff I don't have a clue where any of it went...I'd say my Nan was stupid but I put down to grief

I'm 'guilty' of doing the same, on an almost daily basis haha :) I always find it reassuring seeing posts like yours tbh: you realise that whilst there's hordes of people (weirdos to me) out there who try to shut you down or criticise you for 'going on too much' sometimes, or hate the fact that you are just actually able to share your own stuff with perfect strangers, it's refreshing to see someone share something so personal as you did above. Don't try to change that or think that you f*cked up mate - like i always do lol - emotional people seem to be thin on the ground these days and it's not a good thing. Sorry for your loss too btw. Losing your mum is the hardest thing.
They were too sophisticated for the times then...can you imagine how they compare today? Different plane man. It's almost like genuine genius can be measured by the level of its so-called "underachievement". To me, they're the benchmark for modern Scottish musical talent. Very few come within a thousand kilometres of these two.

Utterly brilliant production. A lot of care has been given to all the instruments on this. Also, a really underrated group.
Pat Kane is unquestionably a great vocalist, this is one of those tracks where I prefer verse over chorus.
