- Like many people who saw the new trailer for Gladiator, I liked it, but it felt like the musical choice was off. It didn't feel like a Gladiator film. The choice of a modern hip-hop song felt out of place and whilst the trailer was well put together and the editorial choices were spot on it was just about tone for me.
I've decided to have a bit of fun and have done the following...
- Using AI stripped out and isolated the audio.
- Replaced Music with score from Gladiator
- Re-ordered some of the edits to fit better with certain sections of the music
- Rebuilt the sound design to bring life back into the trailer again (stadium chants, swords, rhinos, punches etc)
- I have also applied a slight film grade in an effort to see it match the original's tone a little bit more.
No disrespect to the original editors job as it was top notch. For me this started out as an experiment to see what it would feel like if they used the music from the film and I think this makes the trailer feel more part of this world. My main thoughts when doing this was that you would never see a trailer for a Star Wars film with modern hip-hop music and if you did I don't think it would work. My edit is far from perfect, due to the quality of the dialogue, but it does the job.

WOW I searched all the remix trailers of Gladiator and this is the best combination of the video and audio!!

Composer is the guy Scott used for Kingdom of Heaven, so I think the film is in good hands there.

Thank you. I knew there would be fan edits swapping in the original music. This one is closest to what I would imagine they should have done.
Now we need a version with the Conan the Barbarian music from the original film's teaser trailer 😉.

Wow - your fixed version is so much better than mine. And yes! Tone is so important. I tend to love trailers. Even if the product (movie/tv/game/etc.) isn't great, the trailers can be awesome. Past few years, I haven't really cared. I started watching the official trailer for this & was actually getting excited! Until the rap/hip-hop song started. It worked for the Black Panther trailer. Not Witcher, not this. I mean, I like that Jay-z song. But not in a trailer for a period/history drama. You want composers like Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, & Erich Korngold (composer for 'Captain Blood' 1935 & 'Adventures of Robin Hood' 1938 films).
It's why I did my own rescored version - the rapping just jerked me out of any immersion. And it annoyed me so much I was like 'I'm taking 2 hours & doing a fixed music version'. I was thinking of using David Arkenstone (who I highly recommend), but saw someone mention the Hans Zimmer 'Main Theme'. I've never seen the original film, so decided to listen to the 'Main Theme'. It's so good! I can't believe they didn't use it. Luckily, you step in to help. Great job! Also interesting your remixed trailer just cuts out certain lines - I was running around trying to include them without the modern music, so certain words got a bit cut off. It actually works better your way. (Although I do like how mine came out, it's definitely not as good as yours)
@ChaniElkin Thanks for the lovely feedback. I see that you just decides to try their trailer by replacing the rap song. I agree that when I was watching the trailer it was not too bad until the rap music kicks in.
I edit trailers for tv so I have a bit of experience. It was fun having to replace all of the sound effects as the AI only left me with dialogue.
We both seem to have had the same instincts and used the same track for the finale of the trailer. 👍👍

Now it seem a great successor... but I fear that these will be not its soundtrack
@gunther744 Yes there will be a new score for the new movie. Hopefully will it be done the same flavour of the first one and I think it can be. The new composer is a great composer and I hope he would recall some of the themes from the original at some important points.
