Was unfortunate that "Dark Places" which I thought was an even better book was such a "on the cheap" looking film.. Tragic considering the cast... Although reading it I pictured Kate Mara as the lead...
I comment that on every video I see reacting to this movie lol. Sharp Objects was amazing...it was genuinely hard to put down. Still haven't seen the miniseries yet or watched Dark Places.
The violent flashbacks we see from her diary are NOT real. As she puts it when talking about how to write an incriminating diary, the early blissful entries are real, and after that you invent. She was deliberately writing the diary to make him look bad. (Of course his cheating was bad, no argument there. But she invented a lot more.) The dialogue about the baby near the end goes very quickly (it's easier to follow in the book) but the baby IS Nick's. She chose to have the sperm bank NOT throw out Nick's sample, but used it to get pregnant without his knowledge. (That's rather convenient, I admit, to have it work on the first try. But that's true of several pieces of good luck for Amy late in the book & movie.)
Do we know how many times she tried? Does the book say? Because the movie is ambiguous about it. When she showed him the test. Was it days later, weeks later, months later? If she did only turkey baste herself once. If so, nice timing Amazing Amy.
One of the best thrillers ever. I love how it flips the switch and makes her the villain instead of him. Amy has to be one of the best villains in a movie.
@@dunbardunelm3924 A sociopath can still have a good speech. I don't have to like her as a person to recognize that sometimes playing the "cool girl" among guys is beneficial.
SPOILER It's always funny to me how the first half of this movie can fool people into thinking that the husband was the killer even when you as a viewer can see him distressed even in private when he is alone and no one is looking. Just imagine in real life how easy it must be to fool fools. I would fall for it lol.
2014 had some real bangers for movies. Nightcrawler, Prisoners, Gone Girl, John Wick, Whiplash, Birdman, Interstellar, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Winter Soldier, Days of Future's Past, GOTG...was a great year for movies. Any of these would be an excellent next reaction but I recommend Whiplash!
This one is the only one I rewatch routinely. I remember enjoying it at the time, but it’s only now that I look back and think this was really one of the greatest movies of the last ten years. I wish they still made them this good.
I was a fan of Rosamund Pike before Gone Girl due to her previous work in the James Bond series (she’s one of the few good things about Die Another Day) and The World’s End. As disturbing as Amy is as a character in this, Rosamund played her brilliantly and I was glad Gone Girl increased her profile. If you want another good film with her in it I recommend “Hostiles” from 2017
i wish i could’ve seen this movie without knowing the twist. my mom spoiled it for me so i love watching other people watch this movie. dope reaction as always!
If you want another "Prisoners" and "Gone Girl" type of movie i recommend "Where The Crawdads Sing" i had no expectations before watching but it ended up being one of my favorite films of 2022. I can't believe how underrated that film is. Definitely worth checking out!!
I’m the book it said how he actually wanted to stay with her. He was even turned on by the fact she knew him so well to plan out this out. Also the child is nicks child bc she froze his sperm
Another fun reaction. After this, Rosamund Pike (who is English) starred opposite David Tennant and Billy Connolly in What We Did On Our Holiday. I felt terribly worried for poor David! hahah
I never thought him being calm was sus, people who actually do bad shit usually fake cry and play up the theatrics, and people deal with trauma in very different ways. I remember when my grandpa (who I was very close to) died I barely showed any emotion to the point people thought I didn't care, but I just dealt with it by shutting down and bottling up my emotions.
Huge fan of this movie, and the way the entire story is built is delightful to witness ! The tone, the acting and the way the whole mechanism gets in motion ; this movie clearly has a unique feel to it. And it's really cool to see other people's experience watching this movie, because we all feel, catch, notice, decrypt and see certain things that other people don't ; we might understand/put pieces together or get misdirected while other people experience the opposite... It's the proof of a really well made and well thought-out movie ! I personally never saw Nick as the big bad guy... He definitely is fucked-up in his own way, cheating on his wife (I agree with you, you leave people properly but you don't cheat on them) and being violent ; it's awful, most definitely... There's an argument to be made about who made the other one become a piece of shit or were they both pieces of shit from the start and revealed their true natures only after years of relationship ?... I think Nick has always been this type of guy who never really grew up, he doesn't want to be a responsible adult, he just lives without thinking of the consequences of his actions and rather procrastinate all the time than anything else in life... Whereas Amy, she obviously has had a very particular childhood, being spoiled and over-protected by her parents, but moreover has being pushed by them in order to always have this facade of an attitude and subsequently constantly appears to be a flawless lady, and just no one can imagine her making any mistake ! You in fact can notice that all through the movie... With Nick constantly being seen as some sort of monotone half-wit, while Amy can only be seen as a victim of him because of course she's just so bright compared to him ! But yeah, the moment they accuse him of buying all these stuffs, I believed him and knew she pulled these strings prior to it all... And then I started to connect the dots about her whole machination (not all the details, but some of it)... A scene I love is when he talks to her through the TV, with his clever speech asking her to come back and so on ; you then can see her flinch a little bit, with a shiver in her eyes (amazing acting by Rosamund Pike, btw)... And since she strongly believes that "when two people love each other and can't make that work, that's the real tragedy", therefore she wanna go back with Nick right away because she wants to believe in this fantasy of an ideal love story/marriage... All the signs tell us all that it's totally messed-up, but her obsessive mind is way stronger than any logic ! Tough and very disturbing situation for Nick in the end ! But uuh, apparently he wanted the comfort of the money ; I guess he won the lottery ! Life. Choices.
She went to the sperm bank and made a withdrawal and got herself pregnant. Crazy on top of crazy. This movie makes me never want to date anyone again. Whew.

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Run away screaming. I wouldn't stay in the same house as her. I would commit a minor crime and hope to be locked up. Nick kept some samples frozen in the sperm bank When they were talking about nick wanting a baby and Amy didn’t. That was true. She had access to his sperm in the bank and that’s how she got pregnant with his kid. He didn’t put his hands on his wife, she was an unreliable narrator. The fact that the men in the audience would be scared hypothetically to sleep next to her bc she killed. I’m a girl so I’d only know to identify with her side of the story. Not reaching psychopathy to this level, but keeping with men’s standards getting cheated on, used and the resentment that might lead to revenge fantasies like this.

After seeing the kind of woman he’s married to, I don’t even fault him for the cheating.
