- Breaking down the basics of the most popular arcade game in Starcraft 2 - Direct Strike! A bit complicated to understand but once you get into it is incredibly addicting. In this guide we use Terran as an example.

Something notable to mention:
Getting upgrades will affect the units that are fighting on the field. Something I personally do is on the first wave, you have enough money to get stim and combat shield right as your units begin to fight.
This increases dps without reducing that waves unit count.
You generally do not upgrade any unit in your first wave. You just build some units to scout and control the mid if your oppenent built nothing.
The reason for this is, if you upgrade your first wave, you weaken your second, which is the first important one.
Lets say you build 5 marines first wave and you equip it with stim and combat shield when units walk to the middle and your opponent does the same without upgrading anything. You might win that wave, but you will have 150 less minerals on your second, because now your opponent has 3 more marines and upgrades them on the way.
3 marines might not sound like much, but this game snowballs, because these 3 marines may leak into your allys wave, as the second wave fight tends to be already long enough so that cannon is not reached before your allys units pass it.
Anyway long story short, its better to not upgrade your first wave.
Winter's serious voice is exactly the same as his sarcastic/sassy voice and I can't believe a word he says anymore.

In standard, no. In commanders, you take 1st gas right at the start.
@@IrishRepoMan not really, the middle boost is in commanders as strong as in any other mode.
Everytime enemy rushes gas and my squad doesnt we win simply because we have 90% lane control
@@synka5922 when you're playing commanders, the extra defenses allow you to grab that first gas. If you play ds commanders, you'll notice pretty much everyone does it. It's pretty standard.
Just don't do it in the base game.
Thanks I didn't know how much the middle gave! I knew it was important but wasn't sure how much. I was often worried I'd just end up losing if I was more than 1 gas behind but as long as you keep the middle you can be as far as 2 gas behind and still be alright.

Everyone knows the best way to win is to rush battle cruisers cause they're super cool since the update.

I leave when my teammates do that. Just about every t3 unit rush is beaten by mass t1 units. It's only good if you're in a pre arranged team and your teams have a plan to support it. Even then it's risky

One thing I learned recently is if you right click on some units you get an alternate unit pick. For example right click the cyclone to be able to build widow mines.

Hi Winter. Thank you very much for not only providing great guides for regular SC2 matches, but also this one. I just got destroyed by a friend in this game and am still in brain damage. I hope this guide will help me recover.

In commanders, it's pretty standard to take a gas right off the bat.
Paying the $5 for premium is absolutely worth it. Commander mode is the best. Gear mode is fun too. It's totally worth it. It's the only creator I've ever donated to for how fun the game is and it being free.

After watching this, i played a couple of Direct strikes for the very first time, and the ONLY TIME i won was when both my teammates left, and i was with protoss agaisnt 3 terran. Needless to say, i enjoy it immensely. I guess im lucky that they build tons of vikings and ravens, but no ghosts :3 I started with archons and 3-4 colossi, then transitioned to carriers, mothership, voidrays and some tempests..

I try to get tier 2 by the time i have a good line control so i can counter people as soon as i see a unit.

Starcraft is fr the only game where new players get shouted at into oblivion, even league is less toxic.
Between gas and taking mid, always prioritize the mid first. It's a constant source of free income (the rich get richer), and holding mid for the majority of the game will almost guarantee a win (unless you are a dumb dumb).

In my first ever Direct Strike Commanders game I got called out at the end of the match by a teammate who I scored higher than. Not by much but hey. 😭🤣

i dont understand why first gas on bunker kill is still so common, it coasts 150 minerals so basicly 1,5 marine
Takeing the first gas at that time comes from Dester Strike which blocked your income for i think 60-90 seconds, which was huge
but having a marine less...
i mean yea when the game is super equal its risky but if you pushing already to their end wave for wave, i think its not as disastrous as sometimes players pretend it to be
150 mins = 3 marines, having +3 marines early on is huge. if you're wiping your wave and doing decent damage to the next one, go for it.

I had no idea the units were identical. Does that not make some units too good? Without the ability to micro units, why would a protoss build anything other than Disruptors for example? If you remove the ability to dodge the shot, does it not become many times better?
I tend to use them, and they are better, but they are super expensive and can easily be countered by spreading your units on the spawn platform
Try to build it and you will see why. Yes, disruptor is good but if you build only disruptor and the opponent happen to go air or cheap unit, you are toast.
In DS, disruptors seem to prioritize swarm hosts, sentries, units like that. It's common to build some fodder units to counter disruptors.

Hey Winter, do you know if I could maybe play this mode with AIs in offline mode ? I've been having some internet problems lately so I mostly spend time playing customs offline, I'm wondering if I could play this the same way

You can sell units... is there a good reason to do so? Does it refund the cost of them?
Selling units refunds 70% cost base
If the unit hasn't been sent out yet (you bought them after the last wave), you get a 100% refund
I believe Han and Horner have 100% base, but not sure

Look for "eivenhoe" direct strike and you will find a vast amount of direct strike action videos, from where you can learn a lot how to kick ass in direct strike ;) if there would be a direct strike league i would be playing in the direct strike grandmaster league, have fun watching

Pity that the gaming experience is ruined by idiots. if you are new to this type of game, there will be always some smart ass thinking he is the guru and you must follow his advice in the game and if you just want to take it slow and learn, they will start cursing.

Ugh, tried Direct Strike after watching this vid. Winter should have included a carcinogen warning cuz that game will give you cancer. 🤮 Requires less brain power than co-op. Losing is frustrating and winning feels arbitrary and unsatisfactory. Would not recommend. Commander 3v3 especially feels like a game of roshambo where sometimes you might only have 2 of the 3 options while your opponent(s) has a counter. Good of Winter to provide a guide tho for popular content. Was very right about people flaming, definitely a toxic cesspool for a community (comparatively).
