- Episode 4: Four weeks in and I am trying to fix an issue I struck last episode. Yep, how to remove a guitar fretboard, without breaking it.
Last week on the vintage les paul project I took he 1980s Argus Les Paul custom to a place I've never personally been; removing the fretboard. Spoiler alert: somethings went really well. Others, not so much.
After removing the frets sucesfully and heating the fretboard, I managed to life a lit of the bottom e side of the fretboard. On the high e side, It didn't work.
After I lost my nerve I asked guitar techs how to remove a fretboard and they all said, more heat.
Check out how the rosewood fretboard removal went... you can probably guess.

The best way to learn this stuff is to just do it / learn from it & adapt 👍
If your not being pushed your not being challenged,
Keep up the great videos mate ✌
Cheers! Haha couldn't agree more... just have to try not to kill a beautiful instrument while I learn :)
I think the iron method is designed for older style glues like hot hide glue. They heat and humidity breaks that stuff down unlike modern glues. The modern glues its really hard to not damage anything
I tried iron method on this baldwin series."Gibson" 😂 And it wont come off. I was thinking of routing it flat since im going to change the fretboard with a new one. Well. Wish me luck
Looks like that rosewood was never going to let go no matter how much heat was applied....
I think so! Unfortunate for my first time to come across this, but a great learning experience
