Update for Europe: Over here we have EUR pallets. I understand that they work on a deposit system. If the receiver does not return them they will be charged. So, I am not taking them without asking first.
Regarding HT: I place old wood in the sauna for a few hours and heat it - the sauna ;-) - up for a few hours. Works fine and was very common in the past. (Well, one needs to have a sauna of course.)
Another good place to get free wood are construction sites. There is so much wood which is scrap and gets thrown away. If it is in the dumpster and easy to access I take it. (I don't climb over fences or take the good, packed stuff.)
Asking is always good: Please and Thanks are very powerful words.
So, Thanks
Hey Izzy,
You always have great information and I'm really glad you posted this one! Having beat throat cancer a few years ago, I am cautious about what I breathe in. I was planning on some new projects with pallets. Because of you, I'll know what to look for and I'll try to spread the word.
Thanks again!
Paul
I had no idea there were labels on the pallets...
I recently made a really nice rustic bench for the front porch using reclaimed pallets. I have to admit, looking at a pile of reclaimed wood and THINKing "Now what can I make with this?" is kind of awesome.
The bench turned out great and a big thanks goes out to Izzy for his tips, especially on the pallets.
In addition to knowing how the pallet was treated, it is also important to know what the pallet transported. Pallets used for chemical transport should be avoided in most cases. These pallets will generally show some chemical residue . . . be careful in your choices.
Michael Trent Great advice Michael.
There is almost no way of knowing for sure what used pallets have had on them. Especially 48x40 4 ways that get used over and over for just about anything.
Very useful... Do you use any kind of product to treat wooden pallets?
Interesting information, thanks!
Thanks Izzy for the info on the types of pallets to safely use. Look forward for more great how to vids.
Thanks for the update on the drill powered " My little friend" Izzy. I look forward to your more improved version!!
Here in Poland there are "skup palety" (pallet buyers) on every highway and so there is no such thing as thrown out pallets. The only way to get them is to have something delivered on a pallet then arm wrestle the driver for it. At least you know what it was last used for.
Love you, Izzy! Thanks for the safety labeling info, we wouldn't have known what to look out for.
While it is probably better to be safe, I don't worry about Methyl bromide residue. Very little is left after treatment, and it is destroyed in relatively low heat (25 degrees C). Love your videos!
Erik Keilholtz i have been reading up on it and i tend to lean to the same conclusion. However better safe then sorry.
It is funny you mentioned Harley Davidson, When I was a forklift mechanic one of my customers was a HD dealer. Besides pallets they used to give me the tie down ratchet straps that the motor cycles are secured to the pallets with. They felt these are one time use items because of the value of the bikes so they always used new ones and Harley Davidson is printed on them. :)
I always enjoy you videos and the humor you put into them.
I get my pallets from my local grocery stores (Publix) around Gainesville, Florida. There are 18 ( yes 18 of the same grocery stores in the same place. The best place is a small industrial strip near my house. There are a few medical supply shops in the strip and are always loaded with pallets by the dumpsters.
I haven't check my local Wal-marts mainly because I stick to the industrial strip i found. But the best place I have found would have to be grocery stores.
Hey Izzy, thanks for the info and sharing the link for pallets 101. Great info, as soon as I found out about the MB I went straight to my shop to see if I used any on my carvings and thank God any of the pallets were bad. I'm definitely checking all pallets I hunt from now on.
Thanks
Thank you for the specific type pallets to look for! I'm sure that will help many of us stay safe when reclaiming for projects. Also wanted the say how I appreciate your honesty when showing us the failed drill powered pallet pall. But we know you will work it out and build a stronger one. Was sorry I missed you at WWIA me mo meetup. Thought maybe all that standing got to your back and you needed the rest. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Izzy, just found your channel - love it! Just moved into the 'grown-up' dream house with the family- the long and the short of it: Somewhere to FINALLY set up a decent workshop, but absolutely no spare money to do so! Eager viewer of the $50 workshop; love the fact you're pitching to the time poor cash poor family man, who has the will and a little skill, but doesn't know where to start. More power to you, a new fan. Darren, Perth, Western Australia
Great vid Izzy I use pallets all the time , built loads of garden projects with them good to now what to look out for ,thanks Will
I just went for a pallet run last night at my dad's work he got permission to take as much as we could get and filled the trailer and will have to process all of it and go get more
Hi Izzy, I have been a big fan of your channel and subscribed a while ago. I do an awful lot of work with pallet wood and watched this video a while back. To shorten the story, I found a pallet I liked last night on my way home at one of the places I can get them from. I knew instantly it was worth taking when I could see the dark red colors in it and it was heavy as hell to pick up. I took it apart last night and went back out this morning to pull remaining nails and sort lumber to put it away for an upcoming project and DAMN, there it was.....M B stamped on the side it. This is the first one I have found this way and had I not watched your (this) video before, I would not have known what those initials meant. So, this morning I have been out researching the effects of Methyl Bromide on the body and it truly is a really bad chemical and will destroy lives through the nervous system. It is outlawed in most of the nation and also a lot of countries around the world. The lumber on this pallet is absolutely gorgeous and solid Mahogany with beautiful grain and character in it. After reading what this chemical does to the body, I'm not even going to burn it in the backyard fire pit. It's going straight to the landfill unless someone can tell me a better way to dispose of it...soon. I will not keep this hanging around pass this upcoming Monday. Thanks for sharing this info. Karl Ackdamack.
I'm loving the vids! Pretty new to woodworking other than the occasional slapping things together. I have a carpet store that has loads of pallets. Thanks again. I'm subscribed.
I didn't know any of this, but I can tell u that I cut up a pallet slats the other day on my table saw with no dust collection and almost certainly breathed in some of it. I was sick 2 days later, I can't say for sure it it was from the dust or not, but it seems like this is the time of the year everybody is getting sick. Now I will know what not to grab :) thanks!
Good info, izzy swan . I've taken apart a fair number of pallets over the years. I don't know I've ever noticed or paid much attention to those markings. That's good to know. I'll check out the link and learn more about it. Thanks. P.S., It was awesome to meet you in person this weekend. I had a great time with the RUclipsrs!
Great vid Izzy, very useful tips.
Thank you very much for the information. I didn´t know that there was differences between pallets. Keep the great videos!
Hey dude, if that much cuteness is what your "negative" comments look like, your doing great!!!
Great info izzy swan LOVED the exams you have of the negative comments!
***** lol. Thanks Tyler.
this is great information that i had never even thought to consider(regarding the treatments dont to the wood). Thank you!
Thanks for this, I like working with wood but quite often metal comes into play and I need as many tips as I can get
I even made a screen door out of pallets. I still need to do some work on it but it turned out pretty good!
One Woman & Two Acres Awesome
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I have been doing a lot of work around the house and youtube has been a life saver (I'm a new homeowner and a first time DIYer) After I'm done with the big jobs (sheetrock, replacing windows, etc...) I was planning on making some things from pallets. Never would have thought to look for chemicals! Thanks again!
Harley also uses a nice gauge steel near 2x4. I reclaimed 2 or three and used the metal in a receptionist half wall I built. They were stacked by the dumpster, they are so large.
hey izzy have you considered incorporating the piston tower style jack in your my little friend design instead of a drill that way you can simply pump a few times to pop it off then twist the handle to lower it back again (probably with a spring to pull it down) it may also alleviate the drill burning out issue for the harder woods. also please keep being awesome
Good info! I also pick up a lot of old solid wood dressers and cabinets that people leave on the curb. If they're not worth restoring, I break them down and turn them into something else. Craigslist is good for finding free stuff like that too
thanks Izzy for useful informations. as your subscriber I always expect clever and useful infos. but the most important is that little guy made my day.
Next time make your "little friend pallet disassembler , re-arranger" make it in all metal instead of wood. Like my ol' pappy used to say to me,"You never send in a boy to do a man's job"! Thank you for all the great videos.
GREAT video..........Love the baby portion!
Steel manufacturers as well. They ship sheet metal on 10 foot 3x4's sometimes..usually oak or poplar for the heavier gauge stuff. You can get a decent supply that way.
Great info man! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the corner clamp plans. Making some tomorrow. Great channel
Danny Lee Awesome i promise you are going to love them.
Good idea showing those pellet labels, I would have never known that.
As always, interesting and informative. Cheers mate.
I love your message to the trolls...priceless..
Thank you Izzy, In your Link I discovered something about European Pallet, now I have no more Doubt.
Dang! Thanks Izzy. This is stuff every woodworker ought to know.
***** Agreed , well atleast ones using pallets.
Great reclamation recommendations Izzy! :) That safety nanny impression was perfect!
Steve Carmichael Thank you Steve. That is exactly what negative comments amount to just infant bable.
izzy swan Agreed. Nice info thanks.
Lol !
Well there always shep pallets if they like blue !!!,but my favorites are the one with juice concentrates, five pieces of birch plywood ,the plant gives them away and I know some people who pick them up and resale them to farmers for apple crates at 75 bucks a pop ,all food grade too .keep up the good videos !
Excellent video Izzy.
My wife brought home 5 or 6 pallets the other day... no markings on it anywhere, I came home from work today to find my son using them to make an outside table for painting projects.
Scott L i tend to stay away from unmarked pallets. In all likely hood they are fine because laws required MB treated pallets to be mark.
So can I heat treat my own wood
( like driftwood) to get rid of insects or is there a better way
Just found you on youtube .......Reclaimed pallets, man I have a non stop supply for my projects Izzy, over here in the U.K people are going crazy for my adirondack chair all made from reclaimed pallets. Takes me a weekend to make 5 chairs and I sell them for £40/ $60 and all the profit goes into my woodshop and holiday fund.
Well there's a load of stuff that I didn't know about pallets. Thanks for that.
Great Info Bro! Thanks!
I'm having issues identifying the wood in pallets. I've sorted out a few that are about 3 times heavier than the others, one definitely shows the slotted open pores of oak, yet the others I'm clueless about. Up until recently I thought all 3'x3' pallets were fir, since most of them look like they've been made out of DF studs. But many of these are square edged and some are even rough sawn. I have no idea what maple looks like, but I hear it's a heavy wood and I'd love to get my hands on some.
Great video Izzy! It must be troll season again. lol! Big props to read doing the build with a new design. It would be awesome if you would shoot a quick video on the conference you attended and anything you learned and recommendations if you would go back again. I know you got to meet a lot of the big-name people that do woodworking on RUclips. Hope you have a second to give your thoughts. Thanks for your time. Brian
Would any type of pallet hold enough weight at planks on a rope bridge? Planning on using for halloween, so trick or treaters will be walking on it.
Never knew some pallets could be dangerous, or at least, harmful. Thanks for doing this video! Negative comments? After having a "wake-up-call" heart attack, I no longer give them the time it takes to get mad, I just go straight to the next comment & forget about them. I can't imagine life as a troll, but there seem to be a lot of them, LOL!
Thanks for the safety tips, I had know idea.
Just drive around business parks don’t clear them out and take all they have . You can usually tell when they are being reused if stacked neatly . There are usually a few to be found without worry .
Great video 👍🏼
What if there is not a stamp on the pallet. Mine is large with 4x4 post (3 @3’ and 3@8’long and 9-1x4 boards- No Stamp...no markings anywhere. Is it safe to use?
There was a guy raiding Lowe's last week, he had a long bed and a trailer literally took all but five pallets. Good point don't be selfish!
Hey there Izzy. I have this pallet that is reddish brown dense hardwood. It is from India and I just don't know what kind of wood it is. Any ideas? Thanks.
great info on pallets Izzy, my Dad always said, "if you ain't got nothing go to say, keep your mouth shut", and my mom would say "or you could shut it for them" lol, Thanks for sharing
Nice one Izzy, I sometimes get those "baby mouth" comments on my channel too :)
Great info for pallet hunters too.
Take care mate
Mike
Mike Waldt Thanks Mike, they are hard to avoid but i make a game out of it. It called how many bone heads do i get to ban tonight. lol
what about wood project to help with enviremental /economical issues?
I also like reclaiming the 2×2 and 2×4 spacers from lumber bundles.
Good info Izzy! I think my 2x4 entry must have been one of those nasty ones! It smelled awful! The wood was nice though!! ;-)
Thanks for sharing
Larry
Izzy, great video, very informative... however, I've got a circular saw I'm about to take a drill to and then mount it to a piece of plywood; when are you going to enlighten us about the 'tablesaw' you've got at the end of your workbench? :)
Wow! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! You're awesome. I didn't know about the dangers. :)
Negative comments/people are sad.
I've read that any pallets shipped internationally need to be marked. So in the U.S. if you find an unmarked pallet, it's a national-only pallet which is untreated. (Since treating with insecticides etc. is mostly to prevent international transfer of pests.)
Great video
thanks i have tried to inform by this media before and was critized for saying anything worked around govt supply outfits for many years and i just though that people should know the facts glad you put this on yt might advise that to leave pallets that have stains on them alone since you dont know what made them nice job very positive
stewartj good advise i will ad that in the next pallet video i do.. thank you for the tip.
also watch out for those that have been in cold storage mold a good power wash with a pressure washer takes care of most smeel test ?
How does one know if the pallet wood belonged to toxic batch if you bought planks already separated? I bought 90 planks from the place that has 1000's of pallets and they take them apart and sell various sizes and thicknesses? I did not know any of this info before I bought the planks. 😐
The only thing I know of as far as safety not mentioned by you is be aware of what was shipped/ spilled on the pallets if possible (i.e. don't get pallets from chemical processing plants etc. unless you know it's clean.). Some pallets can be contaminated with worse than MB. Other than that, make something!
George Wood good info George.
Izzy I wonder if a "jaws of life" configuration would work well for separating pallets. The jaws could be placed between the too and bottom and somehow made to spread them apart. Just a thought. I'm sure whatever you've come up with will be cool.
That's a great idea Paul. I just took the drill powered pallet pal apart and the threads are already showing bad signs of wear. Gonna have to put some thought in to this one.
Izzy on your "little friend," do you think an impact driver would... make an impact... on the performance? Just wondering if you thought the rotational hammering action would help or hurt.
Also - thanks for the information. I've recently been looking at pallets as a cheap wood supply and this is good, I don't want to poison anyone with any of my projects.
I love using pallets. That's how I start my white elephant gift for work every year (makes a $20 budget go really far). Always goes out of play first. Those oak pallets are no joke. Thanks for the info.
Hi.
Can build a sea worthy boat with pallet?
Thanks for the info Izzy, obviously important that we should know this, and I didn't, although here, obtaining pallets is a problem, because so many homeless make a living from collecting pallets, I feel guilty even trying to locate them. Love the take on the moaners...lol
Thanks, useful.
My concern is unnoticed nails hiding in the pallet wood. One of those through the tablesaw could make for a bad day. Other than visual inspection, any ideas how to avoid that?
A woodworking metal detector. There are about $25 on amazon.
Joey Kissinger thank you for the heads up!
Joey Kissinger Excellent. Thank you! Suddenly I'm out of excuses. :)
Never thought about getting a small metal detector. Adding that to my woodworking wish list on amazon.
Magnets work too
Like it thanks man!
Thanks 🙏🏿
This has to be your best video! Neg Nancy! Ha HA HA HA
Do you ever come across basswood pallets?
Where did the new pallet buster fail ? At all the screws for the metal brace ?
Right above the metal braces.
So the wood failed and not the screws?
I am thinking about 3 wedge design two parrel to the flat pallet boards third one moveing oppisite direction being pulled by a ACME thread like from a car jack to spread the first two wedges and use a impact driver instead of a drill so the extra hammer action might loosen the grip on the nails the wedgeing action would tighten up on the wood for the next hammer blow
The wedgeing surfaces might have to be metal or a hardwood tougher than oak
Izzy, I'm finding the HT but not all in the same place on pallets I have for recycling. If it is found on any board does it apply to the whole pallet?
Cliff Patton if the symbol is on the pallet it means the whole pallet not just the single board.
izzy swan Much appreciated.
First, I have a friend who owns a machine shop, they don't get a lot of pallets. But they have shipping crates which I can pick up for free. So that might be a place for others. Second do you feel a half inch impact wrench might work for your drill operated pallet pal. Just a couple of thoughts. Thank you for sharing your time and skills. No need to reply, just keep doing what you are doing. Thanks
Here in the UK I work for a company that hires out hardwood pallets, its my job to repair the broken ones that come back.
I dont think i've paid for timber in the last ten years, well unless it specifically needs to be a much longer than a pallet is.
Theres nothing wrong with pallet wood my friend nothing at all :)
maybe use a impact wrench instead of a drill. have you ever thought about a wedge style palet pal?
jeremy velasquez Both great ideas.
I want to use pallet wood for 2200sq. ft. of flooring. Is this too big a job for someone that has never held a power tool in his life?
HI Izzy, i saw somebody ask you this already, but i'm not sure if use it or no pallets without mark, I have 3 i just got it, any recommendation, have a little smell like when you wet a dirty dog, help please before i start working with it, thanks.
Edgar Aldi don't use them.
Thanks again for your help.
they are free but you have to transport pickup rip them apart building with them.etc there are other sources of scrap wood irregular pieces.
Another good place is tile store. Those tiles are shipped in pallets and bloody heavy so the pallets are more heavy duty
Nice video
I made it with stodoys instructions !
Like the t-shirt😂
new sub. cool videos!!
How can I tell if it's oak
What state does he live in
