@@diyforknuckleheads Hi it it easy to tell if the an abandoned pallet has had chemicals spiit on it, I saw another video saying as they are used for shipping this can happen as chemicals are a common shipping item.
Thank you for this video. I actually spent HOURS trying to pull out the nails and then I thought there must be a better way. You've saved my back and time!
Very helpful video (took my American brain half a minute to process the accent!). I have a pile of pallets needing to be pulled apart. Now I can pull apart a pile of pallets, like a Boss Knucklehead. Thanks!
To make nail extraction easier after prying up the slats, spray the exposed nail shanks with silicone spray.... it doesn't require much. Even rusty nails will pull out easily.
I have done my fair share of pallet projects but I am always on the lookout for new tips and tricks. You totally provided them. Using the chisel to help separate the board before sawing the nails out is great!
Watched 4 videos of Mr Tappy’s old student and have subscribed. As a 🇬🇧 lady who loves and wants to get into carpentry..... This is the first channel that I have found easy to understand. Love the Aussie accent too.
Thanks to finding this channel I now have the urge to do a bunch of projects and pallets are the easiest way to get free wood so I'll definitely be using these techniques!
Good video presentation. I figured out the two methods you demonstrated on my own years ago. Got tired of that, so I built my own pallet buster. The hardwood handle is about 5 ft. long, with a 1/4 inch sheet steel angled forks on either side spaced so the base of the handle fits over the runners and acts as a fulcrum. I can pull the slats, including most nails, without splitting the ends. I do the center last and can toss the slats to a pile with the buster without bending over to pick them up (and tire my 70 year old back). I showed the device to my local old-time hardware store buddies. They loved it and said I should patent it.
Thanks Brad! I know all about bad backs and anything you can invent to alleviate that is a godsend 👍👍 I'd love to see picture of it? Cheers mate and thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
When I need a break from the wonderful characters of the USA, I can head over here and visit their peers in Australia. Still not sure WHY I need a dismantled pallet, but I would have enjoyed my beer in the easy chair watching Knacker do his thing!

My whole house fills with laughter every time the "great tip knackers" happens. The kids can't wait for new videos. Better than cable. Thanks for the entertainment.
it great techniques way to dismantle the pallets but I sometime i want to save the stringers. but your techniques would leave the half nails in stringers which i could not use. I have found that i use the pallet buster with handle would pull the nails out the stringers instead cut the nails.
Great tutorial, thank you so much, no messing around, no waffling, straight to it...I love your approach...I'm immediately subscribed, I think it will be a little less easier for me, than you make it look, but still, looking forward to giving it a go with your techniques in mind, I have the confidence to tackle it now, yay!
I've used old pallet wood for a couple things, but remember it's the lowest grade lumber to begin with. Mixed grains, knot holes etc. It's a lot of extra work and the finished project often had problems later due to the wood quality/integrity . There's a board here and there that was better but for the biggest part it's not what most people need for most woodworking projects.
Joe, I agree mostly. Pallet wood will rarely end up as fine furniture in your home. However, there are many craft items it’s perfect for. Bird houses, country style signs, outside decorations, etc. You might not care for my crafts and I might not be interested in yours. Doesn’t mean either project is bad. Keep making that saw dust!
THANK YOU ! I want to make shelves for my work shed . They need not look the best . I went for my daily walk and see a stack of pallets beside the road just to be sure I asked the business owner he said " take them all " continuing my walk I see in a trash bin a dozen nice thick wooden posts about 6 feet long painted black so I went back and took all 5 of the pallets and all 12 of the black posts . I have them stacked in the garage and by watching your video NOW I know how to take pallets apart . I may be able to build all the shelves I need with this free lumber sometimes things just work out made my day . Bob in Michigan USA
I actually had the idea a few days ago of sawing the slats because the ends many times are already split anyways from use. Rustic nail holes are cool but I don’t always need them. BTW here in the USA red oak is the most common hard wood for pallets and rusting nails have an interesting chemical reaction with the natural tannins in the oak. It looks like watered down black ink. It would be nice under a polyurethane coating.
Wish I'd watched your video before collecting a pallet today! I am knackered!! Did me in carrying the pallet back from a house I collected it from, just under half a mile away and my arms are like jelly now!
Hahahahaha....not many people know this Ryan but Jurgen loves a bit of DIY.....CHECK this video out when he stopped by my shop! ruclips.net/video/lzKhKtCyHjY/видео.html 👍😁
I have just started working with pallets and love these two techniques. My hand strength has been an issue and this works with that! Thanks for the great tips and how to move a pallet. Takes away the need to have a strong man around!! Love it!!
I had to watch like 50 videos of American guys building ridiculously complex pallet dismantling tools before I found this video. Worse yet, the tools they made would split the boards... How come no one on this hemisphere could simply recommend a reciprocating saw? The method you showed works just swimmingly. Thanks!
SonVolt You should see some of the "better ways of doing it" that have been posted in the comments since your post haha, highlights include hydraulic jacks and bandsaws.
I think it's because a lot of wood workers want to remove every single nail in order to be able to send the boards through a planer or some other woodworking tool. If a tool catches a nail, a dangerous situation might occur (not to mention that you can damage the blades). Using this method makes it impossible to remove most of the nails in an efficient manner which might work well for some projects but not for others. If you don't want to send your boards through a planer or another machine this is definitely the quickest method I've seen.
I am also doing a project with old pallets. I did pry some boards loose, but when removing the twisty nails, I used a palm nailer and drove them out easily. Love the character and price on this hardwood.....
G'day Jessica, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated. Good luck with the pallet projects as well 👊👊 If there's anything else l can help you with please feel free to shoot me another message. Cheers 👍😁
Funny Aussie!! Great suggestions to tear down pallets and since I plan on doing lots of building with them I needed that! Whew...you wouldn't believe some of the techniques on here! Good on ya!
You made my task of removing them so much easier. I'm glad I watched your video before tacking it myself. I'm just going to saw the ends off. Thanks bud🤙
If you Pallet is loose/old enough-the other moving option is to walk it-left, right, left, right; a girls method. I take the stretcher off of one side-and use the pallet as shelving in all sorts of areas; on walls, bird aviary-ETC.
I wanted to add that make sure you use good pallets such as Chep made from yellow pine (or hardwoods available to factory at the time) just like this video. You really don’t want to use cheap and knotted woods from economy recycled pallets.
The chisel starts the magic vs the old claw hammer only where nothing was usable nor presentable again once I was done. Good thing about coach is he shows practical - every day - stuff that 'knuckleheads' like me can use vs complicated rocket $$ science others purport which I'll never need.
I can't wait to get started on my projects! I am a beginner in the Pallet project field and had no idea where to start! You made it look so easy taking it apart! I am going to watch more of your videos!! YOU ROCK!
This is great! I recently spent a whole lot of time taking apart a couple pallets by the side of the road with just hand tools. By the 3rd one, while I was smarter, I was asking myself where my battery power reciprocating saw was. This was enjoyable and I am looking forward to getting more usable boards from your techniques. Thank You!
I drive truck. The easiest way to 'dismantle' a pallet is to deliver to a Walmart Distribution Center. After they're done unloading you, you've got a trailer full of pallet dismantlation.😂
I picked up a table and six chairs exactly like the one you’re using as a work table. It was in very similar condition, maybe worse. I disassembled everything, sanded it all down and applied a lacquer finish it came out perfect and it’s now my main dining room table. The wood is acacia, beautiful and strong.
I am so glad that I found your channel. You made it so easy to understand and I am looking forward to making flower boxes galore. Going to go watch your other videos. Thanks!!
This has become one of my favorite channels. Thanks for all the great tips! You’re an excellent presenter. Just picked me up some pallets and I’m ready for my first pallet project!
Love yr video I love pallets and have made 3 compost boxes I did not have to break them up I just assembled them side by side and nailed them together they look Fab and after 3 years are still standing great video you have inspired me to make something else Thank you from the UK
Thanks for the vid - have watched quite a few on how to make good storage sheds for firewood out of pallets BUT, none of the vids took the time to show how to take them apart without destroying them - in other words I need to narrow the pallets down - now I know how I'll be able to do it. The circular saw method looks quick and easy. Thx again
I had this same exact problem recycling pallets and by the time I figured out the sawzall trick I was almost done with the project. I had actually went out and bought a small claw to pull the nails but it was still leaving some damage. This is the best technique. Or using a circular saw to just cut the whole end off is faster but you loose length.
Shane, I love finding your vintage lessons. BTW, you have hardly changed in 7 years! This is a very useful set of hints and I will use all of them. …Joe in NJ, …USA
HI, Just dismantled my first pallet using your technics, THANK YOU! I'm 65 and managed it pretty well, now I will be on a roll 5 more to go then back to Bunnings to get more lol, I'm addicted going to make the Tyre Shelving for our grandsons Hot Cars, & Wine Bottle Holder for our Son-in-law, then a knife holder I'm so excited, I'm very lucky I have a very handy man here who can guide me if I need any help between Hubby & Uncle Knacker HALALUJA BEST HANDYMAN CHANNEL EVER Oh & keep the jokes coming YOUR JUST BONZA!!!
I have tried a variety of methods to pull apart pallets and I like using my recip saw. I did use a circular saw once but then figured out I still had to pull the nails out to use the other part. Now I just use the recip saw. Thanks for the video, you are very entertaining.
Oh - yes... and another thing while I remember.... My reciprocating saw has been sitting in the shed rusting since the day I purchased it..... FINALLY I now know that the hell to use it for . Thanks again. :)
shaneconlan1 Ha haha... guess what. I had a crack at using that long lost reciprocating saw to pull one apart today and with in 15 seconds the blade grasp sheered off. Darn. I should have got a better quality saw after all. Only cost $35 from Bunnings god knows how many years ago. Ended up resorting to the crowbar and hammer... :)
thank you so much! i just got 7 pallets to make a toy chest and book shelf for my two kids i hope thats enough( biting nails) i have no idea where to start until i just watched your video, and now it looks simple enough for me to follow. thanks again.
Many thanks for the video. I use a 2X4 about 6 feet long, with a slight taper on the end to fit between tight boards. Slip the end into the gap, and pry down near the pallet runners, start at the end, then middle, then the other end. The board pops off with no problem.
Been looking at a ton of 'easy' ways to strip a pallet and even made a splitter. It didn't even cross my mind to just cut the stupid thing. How easy is that!!! No split ends.
Nice Video. And a great Personality!. Pallets can be difficult sometimes. I have a Spinal Disability. And if I can still do what I love, woodworking without hurting my Back, I'm in. Thank you for Sharing.
Awesome! Glad to help Jeff and l think the secret is to just take your time with the dismantling process. Like l say....there are no tropes given out for being first! Hope you're having a great day. Cheers 👍👊😁
Excellent. I was thinking of cutting the boards off short with my new reciprocating saw. When I bought the blade I wanted one for wood, but they only had one for wood and nails. Now I see why they make a blade for cutting nails. I bought the blade for pruning. The old pallet thrown under the trees was not on my mind until this morning.
A pallet buster bar is a great addition, but the game changer is an AirLocker de-nailing punch. Blows the nails out head first with zero effort in seconds. I bought one for our men’s shed recently, and I de-nailed 7 pallets in minutes without breaking a sweat.

Fabulous. You have a great gift for presenting instructions like this in an entertaining and informative way. Just what I needed. Many thanks.
Thanks Earl....really appreciate the comment mate. 👍👍
hitting your crow bar with a hammer will weaken the neck on your crow bar, maybe a better idea would be to use a rubber mallet instead.
better yet leave the crowbar on the wall on never use it, that way itll never get a scratch on it!
This has become one of my favorite channels. Thanks for all the great tips! You’re an excellent presenter. Just picked me up some pallets and I’m ready for my first pallet project!
👍👍....Cheers Chris! Appreciate the comment mate and good luck with the pallet projects 👍😁🇦🇺

TWO Great techniques and your presentation style is superb. I really did feel part of your 'lesson'. Thank you very much indeed.
Awesome!! Thanks for the feedback...l really appreciate it. Cheers 👍👍
Love yr video I love pallets and have made 3 compost boxes I did not have to break them up I just assembled them side by side and nailed them together they look Fab and after 3 years are still standing great video you have inspired me to make something else Thank you from the UK
Well done Rosemary and good luck with your future projects 👍
Thanks for the vid - have watched quite a few on how to make good storage sheds for firewood out of pallets BUT, none of the vids took the time to show how to take them apart without destroying them - in other words I need to narrow the pallets down - now I know how I'll be able to do it. The circular saw method looks quick and easy. Thx again
No worries Grumpy olMan. Glad l could help out and thanks for taking the time to leave me some feedback. Cheers :-)
Good stuff! Thanks for watching Nick 👍👍
Shane, I love finding your vintage
lessons. BTW, you have hardly changed in 7 years!
This is a very useful set of hints and I will use all of them.

Very cool and easy. I'm a woman who loves to work with wood. This is genious!!
+Monique Charbonneau Thanks for the feedback Monique. Glad you liked it. Cheers :-)
Building my mom a shed from used pallets. I would have broken all the wood if I didn't watch your video.😧 Thanks mate! Love from Canada!❤️🇨🇦
Awesome! Glad l could help 👍😁
I have tried a variety of methods to pull apart pallets and I like using my recip saw. I did use a circular saw once but then figured out I still had to pull the nails out to use the other part. Now I just use the recip saw. Thanks for the video, you are very entertaining.
👍...Cheers Bob....Glad you liked the video mate and thanks for the feedback 👍😁🇦🇺
Oh - yes... and another thing while I remember.... My reciprocating saw has been sitting in the shed rusting since the day I purchased it..... FINALLY I now know that the hell to use it for . Thanks again. :)
airbournepickle See….how good's that! You've just killed two bits with one stone :-)
shaneconlan1 Ha haha... :)
airbournepickle Bad luck mate :-) Bloody cheap tools.
I was searching for making pallet bookshelf and find this out. It will be helpful for my projects. Thank you for the cool video..
Manjula Prasanga Perera No worries Manjula. Thanks for the comment. Cheers mate
thank you so much! i just got 7 pallets to make a toy chest and book shelf for my two kids i hope thats enough( biting nails) i have no idea where to start until i just watched your video, and now it looks simple enough for me to follow. thanks again.
+crochet homemade Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the pallet dismantling. Cheers :-)
Smart and fast way to dissemble a pallet. Thank You
No worries at all.....glad you found it useful 👍😁🇦🇺
Many thanks for the video. I use a 2X4 about 6 feet long, with a slight taper on the end to fit between tight boards. Slip the end into the gap, and pry down near the pallet runners, start at the end, then middle, then the other end. The board pops off with no problem.
Been looking at a ton of 'easy' ways to strip a pallet and even made a splitter. It didn't even cross my mind to just cut the stupid thing. How easy is that!!! No split ends.
I thought of cutting the pallet when I see them around outside, but I didn't think of the first method until he showed the viewers.
Superb methods! I found them extremely helpful! Thank you very much for taking the time to share them with us!
My pleasure! Glad you found the video useful 👍😁🇦🇺
