I love using crumbled beef jerked and bacon bits to my pot cooking. I probably don't need to tell you, but one of the best wilderness beverages for mindlessly staring at the fire before you fall asleep is chamomile tea with a few tablespoons of whiskey and a little honey.
I just wanted to say thank you I appreciate the video I watched a lot of your videos now and this is the first one that I've commented on I recently just got into backpacking I'm getting ready to take my first overnight backpacking trip and everyone keeps telling me to take all this expensive food but this stuff that you're talking about is very reasonable in price so thank you I really appreciate it
Love the idea of a cookie mix oatmeal. I always want to eat oatmeal, but kind of dread it in the mornings. Also just got my first package of greenbellys! So far they are great. Taking them on a long trip in about 2 weeks! Thanks
Outdoor Vitals I add the following to oatmeal: chocolate chips, a pinch of ginger and cinnamon, sultanas, and, if suitable, banana. Any or all of the above. That keeps the dissatisfaction at bay...
"NOTHING CANNED" But first time friends and I went camping, we bought 500 gram cans of Tuna, Corn beef etc... Needless to say, we ate what we could asap!! Hahaha
Thx for your interesting vid. I've discovered that oatmeal leaves me hungrier than if I didn't eat anything at all. In fact, over the years I've found that the best approach to ultralight is to be a little overweight when you start. That way you don't have to carry as much food cuz you're already packing it on your waistline. ;-)
that looks well planned. I just need warm food in the morning though. Or at least some tea. waking up, just barely above freezing out. I am not getting out of my hammock until I have had something warm.
I saw a clip here on YT were the guy did not even bother emptying the noodle and rice bags. He just poured the hot water straight into the bags and let them re-hydrate right in the bags. Not a bad idea i thought. I am a bikepacker and go for ten days at a time. So that is around the 1000 mile mark. Let me tell you about oatmeal in the morning though. After 600 miles the stuff comes out. Maybe it was just my own system. I consumed roughly 1kg of fruited/nut oatmeal warmed up with hot water over the first 4 days. I could not go to the bathroom for days but still had to eat. Finally at the 600 mile mark it came out in belgium - i live on the west coast of the UK. I think it was just the shock of so many miles. I was still eating like i should but i could not go and did not feel the need to go either. In the 60's we were told that pretty much raw steak and eggs was the thing. In the 70's came pasta. In the 80's it was powerbars. In the 00's it was gels. Now its rice cakes. I figure if i mix and match the above ill be ok.
On Ranier happy hour was Yukon Jack and hot chocolate. High country backpacking in Colorado was always vitamin A and weed (and a nice brandy). We left the buzzkills at home.
Great video. Going to be hiking in the High Sierras in a couple weeks & will be purchasing some Greenbelly bars soon. What is your ratio for the cookie mix oatmeal?
I'm wondering what others in the comments are.. what cookie mix?! I'm definitely going to try that.. eating breakfast with coffee on the trail is one of my favorite parts of the hike. Also, are you doing freezer bag cooking or do you have a bowl?
1. Any ole cookie mix from the store will do. Try to keep the ingredient list simple though. 2. Yes and no. Rarely freezer bag cooking. Prefer more simple one-pot meals in a bowl.
@@Greenbelly after commenting I made myself a cooking pouch and I tried multiple time the knorr meals. Pouring boiling water in the bag and letting it sit for about 8/10 minutes is enough to fully cook the rice/pasta. Saves a lot of fuel and also from doing the dishes
Is this 24 hours or 12h? Since I am prepping for 34 days and my plan for a day (12h) is totally: 583,13g. I cannot even imagine to carry extra 416,9g/ day more weight!
You have a well thought out food system and preparation planned for yourself. The Best for me is using the freezer bag cooking method with food I prepared for the trip. OK , before you ask , There is an occasional Mountain House Biscuits and Gravy pack included , they are really good. Mornings , I like the Steel cut Oats 1/3 cup to 1 cup of water , Two tablespoons of this mix is added to the oats , diced Prunes , diced Dates , diced Pineapple chunks , Craisins and Raisins. Then I add Some ( to taste ) Ground Clove , Nutmeg and Cinnamon ( dried Milk is optional ) . To prepare add the 1 cup of boiling water , stir or mix and let it sit for a few minutes till it gets to the consistency you like. Honey , Brown Sugar or granulated ( white ) sugar can be added if desired. I don't mind using the stove in the morning since I like a cup of hot coffee or tea. Snacking during the day . Supper is a reconstituted dehydrated meal I packaged and then cooked using the Freezer Bag cooking method. Freezer bag cooking is easy cooking and clean up , just lick the utensil and pack the bag in the trash bag..
Hi Chris, I didn't get a chance to comment when you asked for feedback. My bad..However I am hoping that some of your newly developed product has some keto options for the fat burning hikers out there. I know that the usually go to is carbs but they burn fast and thrash fast. Fat burns slow and last a long time. Thanks Two Knees
How many days of food and wieght of food when you leave.Eat all of it before you reup food supply and where do you reup and how?Can you have safeway deliver food to highway mile marker close to trail when possible?
You dont need to dirty a pot for breakfast or dinner, just use freezer bags to carry your meals, they can handle boiling water , so put the hot water in the freezer bag with your food, and no dishes except tour spork!
1. How much. Depends on the trail and what part of the country. East coast is obviously wetter. Therefore, there are generally plenty of water sources - I might only carry a liter or less at a time if there is a water source every few miles. West coast might require carrying enough water for the duration of your trip or several days worth at a time (3+ liters). 2. How to pack it. Flexible bottle (platypus, etc) or lightweight plastic bottle (smart water bottle, etc).
I would skip the Nori and Pork Skins. I like the Pork Skins, but never had a taste for Nori (even though I was in Japan for 2 years). Also nothing with Chocolate as I break out in a few zits after eating it or anything sugary. I like freeze dried and dehydrated meals, nuts, peanut butter, trail mix, dehydrated fruits, freeze dried fruits, jerky, grits, oatmeal, potato flakes (Idahoan), coffee (not the instant), water and some sweetener free lemon and lime drink additives and even something with electrolytes. If available any wild edibles (fruits and veg) found along the way. If there was any chance to catch a fish, I would try. If I caught a fish I would cook and eat it on the spot. I understand that miles gained are very important, but so is my physical and mental health. So I wouldn't waste too much time in a day trying to catch a fish while hiking. Loved the food representation. Videos like this are always helpful. Thanks for the post.

don,t need to here about your issues. It sounds like you are the troll after eating chocolate. Not trolling, just attempting to help your social life a little. Sorry you got your little feelers hurt.
Really? so you like to be high as a kite when backpacking? Weed can make you stressed and anxious during a time you're trying to distress and be less anxious. Regardless of the fact that states are trying to make weed legal, they're only doing so because it's the largest cash crop in the US and by legalizing it would give states more tax dollars, so it's about the money not about whether or not it damages you because the FBI and the medical field ALL know it's a drug of addiction, and for some trying to stop brings on some nasty withdrawals, and it's widely known by the same sources that it is for some a lead in drug to worse drugs. Not only that but if you're stoned and hiking you could do something stupid like accidentally trip and fall down a canyon or some such place and die. Yeah I know, I'm so uncool.
Rekmeyata you're full of shit, thats what you are. You're certainly entitled to the opinion of disliking weed, but its benefits far outweigh its negative effects. And weed is not addictive at all, I haven't smoked weed in a year and I have smoked weed regularly, not at all, occasionally, all frequencies of my own choice for 30 years now. I can quit anytime I want like I am now. This is not at all the case with Alcohol or tobacco , I struggled with quitting tobacco which I am now thank GOD clean of for 10 years. Weed , regardless of states monetary motivation, weed is not deserving of its class 1 title. Some people do react to it differently than others and have anxiety for side effects. That said, just because that is your problem, doesn't mean you should impose your opinion on the rest of us because of your personal fear and misunderstanding. If I were allergic to peanuts that doesn't give me the right to tell the whole world that peanuts should be banned because some people might have an allergic reaction to it...
@@Rekmeyata You should probably do some research before you say things like that. It's a lovely sentiment, being anti drug/addiction. I've watched family members destroy themselves and everyone around them...but that was alcohol, meth and heroin, not marijuana. If you bothered to spend fifteen seconds researching, you'd know it was non addictive and non harmful. And yes, some people get anxiety, but for some of us it's the only way to relieve it. Don't smoke it if you don't enjoy it, but trying to push misinformation at people to get them to do what you want is silly. I get withdrawals from sugar and caffeine, never from weed 🤔
