Diggin this one...and I’m glad Hop seems to be in a better “place” as he’s dealt with whatever issues or “demons” that have been his focus (even though it’s really none of our damn business apart from his family and loved ones). Lol, I may be from a small demographic of fans (mid-fifties, white if one were to look at me, but really Native American, retired, divorced, single father of the best daughter one could ask for, living up a “holler” in West Virginia), I can honestly say that I’m not the only one. Anyway, I’ve been a fan of ALL music since I was old enough to care (late 70’s). Been into Hip-Hop and Rap since ‘80. And yeah white people, there IS a difference. Anyway, there ARE those of us “old” people that DO listen to the views and opinions of young people and give em the respect, attention, and credence they absolutely deserve. I can say though, that there’s not enough of us who do...no matter what color our skin is. Apologies for the “ratchet-jawing,” but in the space we’re all in at the moment, things need to be said, and heard. I can say this with all honesty because I’ve lived through it. There’s a lot of drums being beaten (no pun intended) at the moment, and ALL deserve to be heard...period. I can say that race relations, as a whole, have been going in the wrong direction since the 70’s and 80’s that I grew up in, and music is a good barometer of it. All one has to do is look at the skin colors of the artists and band members of the late sixties and seventies and compare them with the ones now. I will never know what it is to live life or feel what a black person feels like. But, I can say that I’ve been right beside, and have gone hand in hand with, some black people that I can call friends and who I love very much. So, does that make me impervious to any responsibility, guilt, or wrongdoings that black people have had to live with or endure? Of course not. With hindsight being 20/20, all of us know that the past cannot be changed. The ONLY power we have is the ability to live the future how we see fit. I can also say that the spotlight is as bright as it’s ever been. The responsibility for each of us is to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. Do we continue to go “backwards,” or do we decide to go forward and make the world the best it can be as individuals? What we face is a moral issue that no law ever past now or in the future will be able to change. Morality CANNOT be legislated. The answer lies within each one of us. It’s a “generational” problem and the answer lies within generations yet to come. In our democratic system of government the only power the individual has at all is the power to vote. And if your way of “protesting” the system is to NOT vote, then you only succeed at silencing yourself. That’s the only voice the individual has. Personally, I feel that if you choose not to vote, you have no right to bitch. Again, apologies for the rant, and thanks if you’ve made it this far.
