I think we can be a bit spoiled sometimes. When reviewing cheaper cameras for example, I always try to forget the fact that I use a Canon R5 on a daily basis, and be a bit more even headed about it. If we compare everything to more expensive gear, cheaper kit is always going to look bad. It really is a nice little lens indeed, no matter what people say :)
It could be you got a good copy. I was asked to take candid shots at a local little leaugue baseball game for my job using this lens. At first I had the edge because the lens was light enough to let me walk around and take shots from different angles. My colleagues were "stuck" with the Canon 400mm f2.8 which is a beast of a lens. No way you can walk around with that lens. At then end of the day we comapared our pictures and it was like night and day. The pictures taken with75-300 were absolutely horrible. That was the first time I ever saw pictures look that bad ! I mean I have taken bad pictures before myself, but when 90% of 500 pictures come out bad, that's a problem. That experience left me so shaken that I would try my best to avoid this lens probably, even if it was given to me as a gift.
I’m a filmmaker and I love this lens for ultra closeups. I was able to zoom into the actresses pupils and you could see the reflection of the other character she was staring at. The lack of stabilization also works if you’re looking for that stalker type of feel for video. You just have to make it work for you honestly.
I bought this as my first lens with my first camera (5D mkII) a month ago, and I'm already replacing it. For Facebook or Instagram uploads, it is absolutely fine, you can get some great images, its light and it is useful to have 300mm at your fingertips. On the other hand, the image quality is very poor (on mine at least) and with no IS and high aperture, you need very good light to make it work.
I bought this lense a few days ago and it works fine for me as a beginner. I do plan to use it more and have a better tripod being delivered for my stable shots. its a shame its too noisy for video though. USM sucks for video. STM is way better.
It is indeed a good lens for beginners :) Yeah, the widest it can do is f/4, so you'll need quite a bit of light when shooting video. STM is also indeed better.
I am just getting into photography and figuring out the ropes. I was able to get this lens for $80 in ‘like new’ condition. I’m excited for it! I appreciated this video and enjoyed the more monotone style compared to others who are downright outrageous with reviews. Thank you!
just realize it has limits, know at what time C-aberrations would come and you´re done, i´ve been photographed humming birds, snakes, bday sessions and even mtb contest with I can not be more happier with it
I appreciate your approach to this review. I have seen too many other RUclipsrs really beat down on this camera as if they are really expecting a lens you can pick up for under $100 to be some stellar magic machine for a professional. That is obviously not the market for these lenses. They are for hobbyist. So thank you for making me feel better as I am looking to purchase a telephoto lens for as cheap as I can while still being decent for having fun!
I agree. As a hobbyist. After reading the negative comments. I get the feeling that most of today’s photographers are expecting the lenses & IS to magically make their photos look pro. I look forward to better my photos by learning from bad photos. And using body control, a tri-pod when necessary to better my skills.
The lens in most of your video is the 75-300mm non-USM, did you review the non-USM or the USM one? I know only the AF system is different, but the USM does assist in achieving faster AF and helps with video content too
Its a good lens! At least my old 75-300 IS USM. Its true, its weak with open aperture, but at 300mm you easily have to use F8 at least, better F11 or F13 and its probably the best budget tele you can buy 2nd hand!
No I think you answered all my questions 🙌🙌 bought my first camera, T100 but it's a start and the 70-300 is on its way today. I'm shooting a very small wedding and I'm normally a smartphone shooter but this is just the start for me. Thank you for explaining the language of photography much love🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Wow, again a very artistic, yet informative review! This USED to be one of my LEAST favorite lenses, but is now one of the tools I recommend the most! I currently use one adapted to a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera, and think it's a really good tool for a number of reasons: 1. On 2x M43 it frames up an equivalent CROP to a 600mm lens! 2. It is small, lightweight enough to add to my camera bag without becoming a burden. 3. It's affordable (and "budget" is my niche).
@@mehmetcemalacar3924 Hi! Since the time I wrote my first comment to this video, I've stopped using my AF (autofocus) Canon-mount Viltrox adapter (because it ruined the electronics on my camera...I made a quick RUclips short about it, on my channel. So, I now use only MANUAL focus with these old lenses (and use the Nikon mount) etc. The AF wasn't that good anyway, and for video I don't mind using manual focus.
Thanks a lot for the video. Just bought a used one for 60 euros, i think it's a good price. I live in a flat which have an amazing sight on the whole city, therefore beautiful sunsets, moonrises as well. I think it will get the job done for a very honest price !
If this lens is good, why don't professional photographers always recommend it that I'm experienced in the field, but I've moved to 85mm, it's great, but it's constant sometimes it doesn't help, but it's great, and it's the number one I have in the lenses.
Thanks :) In the case of this video, the voice was recorded with a Zoom H6 + the SGH-6 capsule. I just keep it close to my mouth, but from the side, in order to avoid plosives. It being close to my mouth also helps to reduce unwanted noise, especially as I travel, so I'm rarely in a sound treated room. I hope this helps 👍
I'm a (starting) sports photography and started with my Tampon 18-200 F3.5-6.3. I feel like the lens has really been used to many times, pictures are blurry, noise and autofocus isn't working that well anymore. I'm thinking of buying this zoomlens, and since I'll be using it along the fields with balls flying everywhere, I don't want to pay thousands of euros haha. Would you recommend this lens for sports photography (soccer), and especially evening photography? My current lens is too noisy as soon as it get's a bit dark outside..
Everything I try to get rid of this camera, I simply can't. Yes, you need to know how, when, and where to use it, but when you do, it does an amazing job. For the price, it's just a great tool. With a full frame camera the output is really good. I'd also say, because requires some craft, it is a learning tool that will make you a better photographer once you upgrade to a 70-200 or 100-400
That's absolutely true :) Equipment which is not as easy to use as its more expensive counterparts will always make you a better photographer, as it forces you into creative problem-solving mode. When you do eventually graduate to more expensive lenses, you'll get that much more out of them, because of what the old trusty 75-300mm thought you :)
I find it hard to believe that these photos were shot with this lens. I own one and it never produced these kind of shots. Mine has a lot of chromatic aberrations and human skin turns out glossy and has a typical glare with no details. But some new canon DSLR models like the 90D have a processor that corrects a lot of the problems so you don't have to edit them in Photoshop, maybe your camera has one of those processors?
Would it be good for sports pictures. I need a zoom lens for photographing my kids playing baseball and soccer. If not what would you recommend on a budget?
For me, it is worth the price cause I paid $75 for it. The only problem I have with it is the AF some times does not work well. I mainly use it for landscape.
A fair review remember it’s a budget lens but it does an adequate job for the price , and it’s a lot lighter than my 70-200 2.8 so depending on circumstances I can carry either
Starting as a landscape and city photographer, I have a major confusion regarding this lens and 55-250mm or Canon EF 80-200mm. Which one of these three would you recommend for taking shots of distant objects? Also, which one of these three gives more professional look to the photos and less chromatic aberration? Please, help me choose the best one, unless there is a better one than these (just not much more expensive) or unless fifty nifty or 24mm are better choice?
I’m taking pictures of fly fishing flies that are as small as a dime or smaller. With a macro lens do you think this would be good option for just in the office. To show detail of super fine small items.
I have this lens bought it over 9 years ago. Still does great work if you know what your doing. It's great with portraits when using of camera flash at great distances. In my opinion, the lens will perform well depending on the user. It's not an L lens but it will do the job for folks on a budget that have the photographers eye a and patience.
I have used this with both crop sensor and full frame, and the blur and aberrations are - while not intolerable - very noticeable and need extra attention when editing. They get better if you close the F stop down to 16 - 22-ish, but stuff still just ain't exactly sharp. Shooting wide open with the biggest aperture I find the results nearing unusable.
is this lens good for a people who want to start a wildlife photography ? i am amateur and i really want to do wildlife photography but i don´t know which lens should i buy because of money
In my experience, Canon USM lenses that an not L just means soft focus. It is more of a gimmick at that price point. A faster lens will do more than an f4-5.6 with USM.
