Hey man thanks for doing this! Its so intimidating getting into MTG so late. I have no valid cards, no idea who anyone is, and most people ive met cant be arsed to be patient with me until i get it. This is a great source of info for someone like me, even so long after you made it :)
I hope to see you continue the lore series one day I love your style of videos of showing the cards I wanna see a video on shape shifters, changeling, lorewyn, and morophon
Really enjoying this series and hope you keep it up. It's been many years since I read most of the early novels and I've missed several along the way, so these recaps are a nice way for me to get back into the older lore. Thanks.
I was looking for someone clearly explaining the mtg's history, and I found your vids. It's cool, thank you. Though it is a bit difficult to catch all the details for a french man (I am), great job !
While we don't know what truly happened to Mishra, here's my theory: (note that thisbis largely speculation) By the time Gix infiltrates Mishra's inner circle, Mishra is growing old and sick. Gix feigns loyalty and offers Mishra an otherworldly technology that will not only save him, but strengthen him. Mishra agrees. Gix brings Mishra before Yawgmoth who turns Mishra into a. Phyrexian. This new phyrexian looks like Mishra, but it is controlled by Yawgmoth's will (like a terminator). This gives Yawgmoth full control over one side of the brother's war. Meanwhile, Mishra's soul and what remains of his organic body are held on phyrexia, which is what Yawgmoth uses to torment Urza later. Mishra was presumably freed/killed when Yawgmoth and Phyrexia were destroyed. Once again, it's headcanon, but i thought it would be fun to share
Lemme see if I got this straight... Ursa activates the Golgothian Sylex causing a gigantic explosion that destroys all the Argothian island, but he ascends to a planeswalker (at a very convenient moment) and has his eyes replaced by the Mightstone and the Weakstone ??? How much LSD did the writers of these stories took before writing them?? LOL!! I'm loving this novels!!
Excellent job covering my favorite MTG book I've read! I was wondering if you're planning on covering any of the earlier books (before they all went linear?)
Great episode as always! Pretty sure most of the archeologists survive in the stones explosion (though sadly Tocasia dies :'( ), but it's nitpicking on my end :) Keep up the great work!
Another detail he got wrong: the brothers did not hate each other until the Koilos incident, and in fact got along as well as you'd expect young brothers to. And they were sent to the site by their stepmother, who wanted their father's wealth all to herself.
there are a fair bit of points incorrect actually. Tawnos escaped because of Tawnos's Coffin Urza built. the circumstances of why Urza wanted to win Kayla's hand in marriage. a few others in addition to the ones you guys mentioned.
i wish your videos had captions (youtube captions usually get the spellings/words wrong) and larger quantity of related art (from cards, art books, fan art, etc..)
I am so hooked right now... i need to know what happens! does anybody has a list of books of magic ? i wouldn't even know where to begin or where to continue..
for both Part 1 and 2 they are whole books... so basically he just summarized these whole books in about 9 minutes. However if you want a complete list here it is: bit.ly/1u6pzym
so what was Gix before yawgmoth destroyed Dominaria the first time and how is Gix living in Yawgmoths plane given the fact that they were on very bad terms?
Going to just overlook the fact that it was never determined who was really the father of Urza's son? Mishra didnt just end up naked with the princess of kroog lol
*Book, which was the reason he entered the competition in the first place. And, in his defense, they were wed at least half a dozen times that day, so were likely quite exhausted.
Wait! So where is Mishra if Urza only killed a construct? And can somebody explain better what Position Gix has, and what his role was in the war? He was basically a secret agent right? Agitating both sides of the war?
More or less, yes. Though if you follow Xantcha's storyline and later books in the Artifact Cycle there's a lot of discussion about what makes a true Phyrexian, and it's clear that the Cult of Gix were regarded as inferior by the Phyrexians. This is because the cult members started as human. There were also limitations to how far cult members could go in the upgrade process, and how far Phyrexians would allow them to take things (It seemed that the social system in place had Phyrexians at the top guarding secrets from the cult members). This becomes a focal point in a Bloodlines story arc.
It's also important to point out that while Mishra is "long dead" before he encounters Urza, that it's a figure of speech. His mind is still attached to his body, but he's mentally come apart over the years of upgrades, war, and pursuit of Urza. There is a critical point in the book when the Cult of Gix arrives. The cult tries to infiltrate both brother's armies in order to overthrow them internally. This backfires when they attempted it with Urza as they are quickly identified as suspicious. Mishra's army, however, never picks up on this and he embraces the cult. Much of what the cult did to Mishra from there aided in driving him crazy. He was already hellbent on conquering Urza but he became reckless and more susceptible to manipulation with the cult meddling. By the end of the story both brothers are much older and Mishra has completely morphed into someone Urza no longer knows both mentally and physically. He's dead in the sense that his mind has been changed so much that Urza no longer sees his brother in those eyes. Mishra's mostly artificial body serves as a good physical analogy in that last scene. Later Mishra blames Phyrexia for this though its safe to say by the time the cult met up with Mishra the brothers would have never reconciled anyway. Part of Urza blaming Phyrexia for Mishra's outcome is that he can't blame himself for his problems with Mishra. That's not to say that Phyrexia isn't evil, it just shows how Urza can't point blame on himself.
+Myrdin90 Very well put Brian. By the way Myrdin90, I recommend getting the ebook and reading on a kindle app on your cell phone. It's very practical and the story is so good.
+Laplace the Mage Mishra get's crazy and thinks that using artifacts, and mechanical stuff in his body would be a good thing, so he start's becoming a phyrexian person, but never realizing he was been played.
I don't understand what happened with Mishra. Did they ever explain? Was he always a robot? Did he turn himself into one to become stronger? Was the real Mishra replaced by an android clone?
No! Wait! That's wrong! The tragedy of the Brother's War was that Urza and Mishra were best of brothers until they found the shattered power stone. The Stones corrupted the brothers and made them jealous of each other. They didn't start out hating each other, that was Phyrexia's doing.
In the book, they were super-introverted and I don't think I'd ever call them the "best of brothers." Where did you see that they were super close? If that's there, I totally missed it.
TheManaSource I don't own the book anymore, unfortunately. However, I don't recall as enemies in the beginning. I do recall them liking each other, and I do recall them having typical sibling rivalries. They were a handful, competitive. Urza might have been an introvert, but Mishra was gregarious. They never truly hated each other until after the accident with the power stone. Maybe I'm remembering the book wrong, but the weight of the Brother's War would have been far less if there wasn't any real loss at the big revelation at the end of the story. If Urza truly didn't care for Mishra, then the reveal of him being a machine wouldn't have meant anything, and Urza wouldn't have done what he did. Without the tragedy of Urza not being able to reconcile with Mishra, the book would have had no meaning.
TheManaSource It's the chronoligal order of the story, but not the release order. Arena was the first one if I remember correctly, then there were several Legends based novels. I'm pretty sure The Brother's War came out about the same time as the Mirage was wrapping up so they could have the backstory for the Weatherlight saga.
I answered assuming he was asking if it was the order of the books in terms of lore. While arena was the first, the first established "Saga" was Weatherlight. The Thran was printed later, but it is the first book in the time line, which is why we started there and then moved into the Artifacts Cycle.
No you're wrong about urzas reason for marrying the daughter. He didn't do it for booty. He did it because he saw the kings wealth of knowledge and artifacts he wanted access to.
Hey man thanks for doing this! Its so intimidating getting into MTG so late. I have no valid cards, no idea who anyone is, and most people ive met cant be arsed to be patient with me until i get it. This is a great source of info for someone like me, even so long after you made it :)
Being relatively new to Magic and far too lazy to track down all of the stories myself makes me appreciate these vids so much!!! Can't wait for Ep. 3!
THE WAIT IS OVER....THE SECOND EPISODE IS HERE
THE WAIT BEGINS.... FOR THE THIRD EPISODE.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO COME OUT! ...wait a second...I'm on the wrong side of this.
I LOVE Mtg lore!!!! please Wedge, don't ever stop!!!
0:19 "primary plot points."
the way you flawlessly rumble over ridiculously hard words to narrate makes me cry evrytiem.
Yay someone noticed my unneeded alliteration! xD
I hope to see you continue the lore series one day I love your style of videos of showing the cards I wanna see a video on shape shifters, changeling, lorewyn, and morophon
they need to make a mtg movie series... or tv show
There is one coming out actually.

Not sure.I hear FOX was gonna do something about it.
thx for the information i hope it comes in at 2015-2016
No problem.I can't wait as well.
Loved it! Can't wait for the next one
Really enjoying this series and hope you keep it up. It's been many years since I read most of the early novels and I've missed several along the way, so these recaps are a nice way for me to get back into the older lore. Thanks.
Also forgot to mention that I like the inclusion of cards as part of the story explanation. Nice touch.
Binge watching all of these. Thank. You.
Awesome storytelling
I was looking for someone clearly explaining the mtg's history, and I found your vids. It's cool, thank you. Though it is a bit difficult to catch all the details for a french man (I am), great job !
Watching these again, for the first time. Thanks a lot for putting this series together, Wedge! +TheManaSource
This is one of my favorite books.
You should do this every day of the week!
I wish I could afford to do these everyday. They're quickly becoming my favorite videos :)
I'm so glad that someone made videos about magic lore. Thank you!
THAT WAS AMAZING I LOVE THIS LORE IDEA YOU HAVE
Another great lore and video

my new favourite series, love it so much

I thank you infinitely for this series! Very awesome!

Seen the first part after this. very interesting.
3:26 If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
+MortonGoldthwait
grabs duct tape
Red Green!
Great episode as always! Pretty sure most of the archeologists survive in the stones explosion (though sadly Tocasia dies :'( ), but it's nitpicking on my end :) Keep up the great work!
+Roxaboxen90: Where Magic Lives I agree with you. The archaeologists survive.
Another detail he got wrong: the brothers did not hate each other until the Koilos incident, and in fact got along as well as you'd expect young brothers to. And they were sent to the site by their stepmother, who wanted their father's wealth all to herself.

yep, pretty much, only Tocasia died
Love this series, keep up the great job guys!
This is totally badass. Laser rocks, dragon engines, a big bag of hands. Whats not to like??
Yes! A week late is better than never!!
Love it keep it coming
XD i really enjoyed this episode. nice work dude :D
Wait you didn't explain the Autobots and Decepticons though?
Can't wait!!
cool stuff man.
Easily one of my favorite segments. Second only to spoilers.
i wish your videos had captions (youtube captions usually get the spellings/words wrong) and larger quantity of related art (from cards, art books, fan art, etc..)
I just read the book. I really liked it, there is a lot that I had missed
awsome mate
I am so hooked right now... i need to know what happens! does anybody has a list of books of magic ? i wouldn't even know where to begin or where to continue..

Hurray!
So good
Dr.House @ 3:56
Awesome.
Moooore! :D
I wish they would make the brothers into planeswalker cards.
Joshua Makar Mishra was never a planeswalker, and he has a card, Urza kinda has a card, that's blind seer, depicting him in disguise
We may see this in the upcoming _The Brothers' War_ expansion!
So are the Power Stones, Mox Pearl, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby, etc???
More!
so what was Gix before yawgmoth destroyed Dominaria the first time and how is Gix living in Yawgmoths plane given the fact that they were on very bad terms?
so this takes place in dominaria after the death clouds clear? or on phyrexia?
+Wrecldbyspec johnson yes, it's in Dominaria.
cant wait till theros!
that miiight be awhile if they're doing it chronologically by the sets
Going to just overlook the fact that it was never determined who was really the father of Urza's son? Mishra didnt just end up naked with the princess of kroog lol
Urza is also a terrible husband. He didn't lift the statue to marry her, he did it just to prove he can.
Too good
You forgot about the part where on their wedding night, Urza skips sleeping with his wife to instead read a scroll.
ALSO: Urza X scroll OTP
*Book, which was the reason he entered the competition in the first place. And, in his defense, they were wed at least half a dozen times that day, so were likely quite exhausted.
Wait! So where is Mishra if Urza only killed a construct? And can somebody explain better what Position Gix has, and what his role was in the war? He was basically a secret agent right? Agitating both sides of the war?
+Myrdin90 Well it's been an year, but let's answer: Mishra get's mecanical replacements for his organs for many years... So, he is dead.
Leonardo Lombardi So he let the Cult of Gix "upgrade" him for years until basically he was turned into a Phyrexian?
More or less, yes. Though if you follow Xantcha's storyline and later books in the Artifact Cycle there's a lot of discussion about what makes a true Phyrexian, and it's clear that the Cult of Gix were regarded as inferior by the Phyrexians. I would love to get the books but damn some of them are seriously expensive
More like Ornithropers of DEATH. Seriously that card can be op
Did Mishra willingly join Phyrexia or was he "recruited"?
Mishra was betrayed from the inside and handed over to Gix.
+Laplace the Mage Mishra get's crazy and thinks that using artifacts, and mechanical stuff in his body would be a good thing, so he start's becoming a phyrexian person, but never realizing he was been played.
Hey I have a few questions that I want to ask you. I was wondering if you have an email or something that I could contact you?
You can direct any questions you have to themanasourcebusiness@gmail.com
:)
urza needs a printing as a creature
I rather enjoy this first story is this where the lore beg8ns
I don't understand what happened with Mishra. Did they ever explain? Was he always a robot? Did he turn himself into one to become stronger? Was the real Mishra replaced by an android clone?
he was "upgraded" by phyrexians, hence Urza claims his brother is dead , as in no longer human
i hate to be that guy but urza only wanted to move the statue to win the Kayla's hand for the dowry which had the Thran Tome in it.
No! Wait! That's wrong! The tragedy of the Brother's War was that Urza and Mishra were best of brothers until they found the shattered power stone. The Stones corrupted the brothers and made them jealous of each other. They didn't start out hating each other, that was Phyrexia's doing.

Hey man, you are cool!
What plane is this on?
+casey moon Dominaria. Almost all of the early MTG lore takes place there.
Is this the actual order of the books?
Yes :)
And now I know what to look for on Amazon.
TheManaSource It's the chronoligal order of the story, but not the release order. Arena was the first one if I remember correctly, then there were several Legends based novels. I'm pretty sure The Brother's War came out about the same time as the Mirage was wrapping up so they could have the backstory for the Weatherlight saga.

eldrwyrm So basically what I'm saying is you are correct, we're just answering two different questions xD
No you're wrong about urzas reason for marrying the daughter.
He didn't do it for booty.
He did it because he saw the kings wealth of knowledge and artifacts he wanted access to.
If wedge doesn't have a friend named shard I'm mad. Also I don't sub I'm here very recently
so cooool i have a crush on this host LOL
If Urza is a Planeswalker, why hasn't WoTC made a card for him yet?
***** I don't play standard. The old cards don't disappear bud.
probably because Urza's dead
+Zachary Ott Because WoTC does a lot of stupid stuff. They just don't think too much about it. They just have to make money, lot's of money.
Thumbs up for Ashnod's Coupon!
But i loev detaisl
Anybody else on here in 2023?
I am here! Want to know how this correlates to the set
Present
Is it terrible of me to want a sylex effect for every set? That this is just awful lmao
