    The Tenda 2-pack is on sale for $95 for Black Friday. Sure, it's not the fastest 802.11AC 5Ghz but it'll get the job done for that price. I'm a senior Cisco wireless engineer by trade and am fine with this for the price. You want MU-MIMO and beam forming if possible and this cheap thing has it. With that being said, it's cheap so you may get what you pay for.

    Be sure to get the MW6 and not the MW3 which is alot cheaper. -- MW3 is ALOT slower.
    Also curious to know what speeds others have achieved on the 2 cubes around the house? I am getting about 30% speed on the 2nd two but very quick on the first although pointless as that one is in the same room as the route.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      Agreed on the first part.
      For speeds on the secondary cube, that will depend quite a bit on placement of the system and the construction materials used in your home. The slower speeds on the second cube are likely due to a poor connection to the main /master cube.

    In a review by another publication, they state "that using bridge mode will disable other features, such as the guest network and parental controls" which isn't ideal. I suppose my question here is... could I not simply connect the first Ethernet port on the Tenda unit to my router and the second to an unmanaged switch then move those devices physically connected to my router to the switch negating the need for bridge mode altogether? I appreciate it's an additional expense, but it'd still work out cheaper than the more expensive alternatives which, for all I know, may have similar limitations.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад

      Yes absolutely! This is exactly my setup. A word of warning: when you try to manage devices connected via a switch you may find that you get a weird name in place of something human readable. On some systems you get the MAC address or even the port number. It makes management more challenging but not impossible. Thanks for watching!

    Just returned mine. Every 5-6 days the satellite nodes go offline, main one is fine. Only way to get them back is to restart the main node. Pain in the ass as it’s supposed to restart every night at 3am.

    Got a 2 pack for $99AUD. So much better than my shitty extender for my housemates TV, my TV, my gfs TV and all our phones. Highly recommend. But packetloss is high for gaming.

  • @ShawnKirk007
    @ShawnKirk007 6 лет назад

    OK... so I purchased the Nova MW6 kit and the setup was really simple. Walking through my house I have a consistent signal strength and never drop. I have several devices all connected at once (app shows 19 devices all connected). Several Rokus, PCs, phones, tablets, Alexa, Google Home, and printers all working fine. Then I went to do some port forwarding since I run a couple gaming servers and BAM! There doesn't appear to be any way to forward a "range" of addresses. For instance Source game servers use 27000-27050. Seems like the only way to do it is to manually add every single port...if the Tenda router even allows that many. I'm still going to mess around with it, but wanted to add in what I've learned thus far... Easy setup... lacking port forwarding of ranges. It also doesn't have any firewall settings so... uhh... unprotected?

    • @AnthonyDiRuggiero
      @AnthonyDiRuggiero 6 лет назад

      Why would you put gaming servers on wifi?

    • @ShawnKirk007
      @ShawnKirk007 6 лет назад

      I'm not. The main Tenda unit plugged directly into the cable modem has a gigabit ethernet port. I plug a switch into that and the game servers (running on a single server) are directly plugged into the switch along with a couple devices that don't have wifi ability. So there is no wifi serving going on. Sorry I wasn't clear on that point. My bad.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад +2

      Great question! We haven't had a chance to check out the MW3 but I took a look at the hardware differences between the 2 models and surprisingly there isn't much difference other than coverage. The MW6 will cover more area but it's also more expensive. They both use a similar wireless chipsets so there probably isn't any noticable speed difference. Again, we haven't tested so I don't have any hard data but if you are considering both the MW3 and the MW6, I'd go with the cheaper one as long as it's coverage matches the size of your home. Thanks for watching!

      The MW3 has 100Mb ports, if your wan connection is faster than this then you will want the Mw6.

    Wonder how this compares to the Eero? I have both but am currently using the Eero because our cable company gave us an Eero system when we upgraded to 1g a few weeks ago. The Tenda gets more coverage but the Eero has been doing very well so I haven't gone back. I'll save it in case they start charging us for the Eero. Just wondering which was better.

      If you replace the old Wifi router with the Tenda then yes, you can use your existing SSID and Password for the mesh network, and all you devices will not know the difference when they connect to the new wifi mesh.

  • @StuartRidout
    @StuartRidout 6 лет назад +1

    Hi. Great review. We’re moving into a three storey new build house in a few days so we’re concerned about WiFi speed. Seems like a mesh is the way forward but the house has network sockets on each floor all connected to the main source on the ground where the router would live. Is a mesh network still the most appropriate or is there an alternative that can use the network sockets?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад +1

      Great question! Mesh systems sound like they'd be a great fit for your situation. It's unlikely that a single router from your ISP would cover your entire house so a mesh is a great solution. Without getting too deep in the weeds, yes you could utilize your existing hard-wired Ethernet ports (awesome feature, very jealous...I had to run my own) with a mesh network in a configuration called a "wired backhaul". Not all mesh systems support this so you'll want to ask specifically about that feature on individual products. Thanks for watching!

    What mesh setup manufacture would be best if house 🏠 is brick 🧱 and lathe n plaster and could reach a garage 35-45 from house 🏡 ?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      Depends on the total square footage you are trying to cover really. Brick and plaster is pretty terrible for wifi so you might be better off going with a cheaper system and butting a few extra mesh points vs one but expensive system. To date, Google WiFi is probably the best inexpensive system on the market but check back for some up coming budget mesh system reviews. Thanks for watching!

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад +1

      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад

      +thunder708 Great question! You definitely want to check vendor documentation on this as not every layout is supported. In this case you should be able to do a wired backhaul as long as it's not a daisy chain from unit to unit. Thanks for watching!

      Hi *technicallyspeaking.. this is actually my same question.. I have wired connections from my AT&T router to my living room TV and a PC in the family room and was thinking of using those same wires to hook up two of the cubes so that only one cube would rely on WiFi link.. so just to confirm, you’re saying that this should be doable?

  • @renoc2490

    I purchased the MW6 and the connection speed is strong on all devices except for my MacBook. When I plug in via ethernet its fast, just slow over wifi. I have run diagnostics and it keeps coming up with the same thing about conflicting country codes. For some reason, the country code is CN. Any ideas how to fix this? Tenda Nova have by far the worst after market support in history.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  5 лет назад

      I don't have any experience with the diagnostic error you are seeing but the wifi issue could be a number of things and most likely a combination of them. Wifi speed and coverage depends on local signal interference (ie how many other wifi networks are around you?) and construction material used in your home (2x4's and drywall or concrete?). You also need to look at your MacBook too. How old is it? Does it support 802.11ac? If it's an old model it may only support 2.4GHz and not 5GHz bands which would definitely limit speed.
      An older Mac running on 2.4GHz band with lots of local signal interference would definitely see slower connection speeds. Dense walls in your home would easily block 5GHz which would limit speeds even on a new Mac.
      And also yes, Tenda support does suck.

    • @renoc2490
      @renoc2490 5 лет назад

      Technically Speaking it’s a new MacBook that runs ac WiFi. Not many networks in the area. To be honest, I’ve given up on Tenda do to shocking support. Gonna send them back and take a hit and buy the Google WiFi. Which would you go for? Google, Orbi or Velop?

    Great video. I recently cut the cord and I'm looking for a stronger router to use to cut down on buffering in a room not close to the current router. This might be what I'm looking for, but I have a question about the connections on the back. I have 2 other items that require being plugged into the router. I don't see how I would do that. Can you help me understand if I can use this system and how to connect the other 2 ethernet things. Thanks.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад

      Great question! First I think you are on the right track by considering a mesh system like this. For connecting multiple devices via Ethernet you would need either A) a small network switch to expand the number of LAN ports you have or B) a different system that has more than 1 Ethernet port (for example, the Amplifi HD has 4 LAN ports on the main router). Thanks for watching!

      Great question and a pretty common one for routers. Short version: probably not. Long version: I didn't see anything suspicious when I tested but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Keep in mind that any company caught capturing private data would be absolutely crucified so there's a strong incentive NOT to do that.

      One node (that being the one you connect to your router) can act fully on it's own. You would only need other nodes if your wifi signal doesn't spread as desired. Thing is, you get 3 in a pack, so...you may as well disperse them :)

  • @ShawnKirk007

    I've watched several videos on the Tenda Nova Mesh MW6 and I'm slightly confused about 1 thing. Port Forwarding. No video mentions how you handle port forwarding on these things. All the instructions seem to indicate you are replacing your existing router with these. I have older PC hardware with no WiFi ability, so I need a switch to provide Ethernet access. That aside, my current router has several port forwards for web, FTP, and gaming servers. So does the Tenda router have some ability to port forward? Can I simply plug them into my existing network without a router conflict? I'm new to Mesh so bare with me.

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад +1

      You are definitely on the right track with your questions. A mesh is really no different than a normal router from your perspective. You can still do port forwarding on basically every mesh system on the market. The Nova MW6 has Ethernet ports on each cube so you could plug your PC directly in without needing a switch (unless you have loads of devices). Yes you *can* plug the Nova into your existing network but it will make your life significantly more difficult due to "double NAT". Thanks for watching!

    I have been looking at the Google Wifi, this seems like a contender as well. However I live in a 2 bedroom basement apartment so I do have concrete behind the walls besides the walls that split the rooms. Would Google Wifi or Nova MW6 Mesh Networks work ? I will be using all 3 just to really reassure a good connection because like you said before "density is the wifi killer" Thanks

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking  6 лет назад

      Great question! From your description I would say yes, a mesh system should work and it should also dramatically increase your wifi coverage. Unless your apartment is ridiculously large AND a concrete bunker, 3 or even 2 routers should be plenty. The concrete walls will definitely present a challenge but you can experiment with the placement of your routers to find what works best in your apartment. Line-of-sight between the routers is usually best so aim for that (or as close to it as you can get) and you should be good. Thanks for watching!

    Can I use my own router with this system as I would have better controls over the settings? Settings static IPs based on MAC, changing DNS, port forwarding, Disabling some devices from reaching the internet. Could I disable the wifi in the router and use the Trenda MW6 as the wifi mesh? Or does the Trenda have to act as the router?

      Great question. Short version is "we didn't test that so I couldn't comment". You *can* use your own router but your WiFi clients will have to deal with double-NAT. It's not a deal breaker but it does add some challenges. If you opt to use the Tenda system as your primary router you'll still be able to use custom DNS and port forwarding and I believe MAC based static IPs among a whole host of other features. Thanks for watching!

      Ehh double-NAT sucks. However, if the Tenda system can do everything I need. That should be good enough for me. Thank you!

      @@TechnicallySpeaking Could you just put the Tender in bridge mode. That will solve the problem?

    Don't buy, Tenda chit. This router not supported Gigabit speed (mentioned out put), because no Gigabit input lan/wan. Maximum speed output only 100mbps. Don't waste ur money, buy gigabit port router like D-Link COVR 1100, same pricing but Gigabit port support.

    Can you add more nodes? Like buying two MW6 kits together to cover a larger home?
