  • The overall winner for Album Of The Month in April is Opeth's Blackwater Park, beating ELP's Brain Salad Surgery convincingly in the last week of voting. It is an extraordinary record. By turns heavy, quiet, brutal, delicate, beautiful.

I'm 60 and this is the greatest piece of music (let alone Metal) I've ever heard.
I requested the song Blackwater Park to played at my funeral.
And dammit they better play it.
Or I will haunt them till their dying day.
This isn't music, this is Art.

I saw Opeth in a (very) small club in Metz/France when they toured this album. There wasn't even a real stage, they were pretty much playing amidst the crowd. That was just before they broke big. Even though I prefer "Still Life" slightly more, this album is undeniably a masterpiece and the band's subsequent world-wide success well-earned.

This is remarkably good - possibly the best of the harsh growly vocal albums but acoustic guitars! and pleasant melodies! and tuneful vocals by the same guy! and a healthy dose of prog to go with your metal! I've seen Opeth 4 times and will be delighted to do so again. Mikael Akerfeldt is a great frontman and anyone who has been in the band has been a great musician.

I've just discovered this band too. Their album Sorceress is fantastic. Dark and beautiful at the same time.

Jim, you absolutely must listen to Storm Corrosion. The collaboration between Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson. It's hauntingly beautiful.

This album has been a constant companion for me since it's original release. Such a great collection of songs that display both the stellar musicianship of the band but also the production from Steven Wilson. Definitely one of my top 3 albums of all time.

loving this. yet another classic on your channel. This Album awakened me to the possibilities of Metal music and music in general. There are no rules. I heard this around 2002 and it blew me away.

The way the drapery falls starts and ends the exact same way reminds me of close to the edge (not that I’m comparing the 2 songs).

Completely agree with what you said at the end of this video.
What's great about Opeth in their earlier albums was the unpredictability too, you never knew what was coming next in the songs.

I so agree. Planets alined before Blackwater Park with Still Life and after with Deliverance.. and I like them a bit more because they are more brutal.

I'm enjoying listening along. I only really got into Opeth this last 6 months myself but haven't been able to put this down since I first listened to it. There are so many textures and callbacks to melodies earlier in songs that you are rewarded with on relistens. I'm glad that BWP won this month, a very deserving winner in my opinion!

    1) The Drapery Falls (arguably best song ever from Opeth ; is way long time that was suggested by me) 11/10 rating
    2) BlackWater Park 9,75/10
    3) Harvest 9,5/10
This is the podium in this record, then :
    4) Bleak 9,5
    5) Dirge For November 8,5
    6) The Leper Affinity 8,5
    7) Patterns In The Ivy 7
    8) The Funeral Portrait 7
Be sure many other Opeth albums are good as well than this . This is only my third favorite Opeth album for example (and i am not the only one)

Yesterday's comment disappeared 😵‍💫 fortunately it wasn't too long so I try to remember: I had written, that if you like Harvest, you will love the whole Damnation album, no growling at all. And Drapery Falls is a masterpiece ... I think I'll save my last sentence for part 4 😆🤘

Thanks so much Jim, this is peak Opeth for me along with Pale Communion at the opposite end of their spectrum. The 10 minute mark of the track BlackWater park where they bring in a punk vibe is my favourite metal riff ever - just such a great end to the album.
