I’m saddened by the news of the passing of Michael ‘Ibo’ Cooper after a short illness. Jamaica has truly lost one of its greatest musical geniuses and I have lost a friend and associate who I have known since our days at Jamaica College - over 6 decades ago.
Music was always close to his soul and he provided perfect interpretations of our quest as a people anxious to take our place in the world. He was also committed to nurturing young talent and devoted his later years to teaching young Jamaican musicians.
He suffered much from the recent death of his son and wife and from his later struggles with his own illness.
I extend condolences to his daughter, family, friends and colleagues.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.

I don't know if Jamaica is really aware of the magnitude of this man's reach and value to the music and cultural development of our entertainment heritage... a deep study and scientific measurement should be conducted by the reggae unit of U W I...that will begin to showcase and bring to light the wealth and immeasurable value that this iconic man has brought to the stage of our local music industry...where many older and vintage artistes have failed miserably..That fine specimen of our local entertainment artform has lead the way by leaps and bounds such that the constant losing out of valuable income personally and collectively by our economy will come to an end. This alone speaks volumes to the type of consumate musical artistry we have lost..hopefully..his magical quintessential legacy will not be lost .. and the true worth of his works will be felt in years to come...Ibo can be said to be the greatest influencer of our local music industry upon the young musicians for the last two and half decades...I am certain that his work and legacy will not be in vain.... I had the privilege of meeting him and conversing with on two occasions.. R I P iconic legend Kingsley Michael I B O Cooper
