Regardless of the reasons why one may choose to stay, or choose to leave, it is their choice to make, even if they only have the Lord on their side to bring an end to the demonic madness. For me, it was either leave and live, or stay and die. I chose life, and when God opened the door for me to leave, I ran through it. The reason why an abuse victim usually defends the abuser is this: abusers don't usually start with physical abuse because they know you'd obviously leave immediately. They start with emotionally and mentally abusing you through series of gaslighting and manipulation, etc to emotionally capture you. Then by the time they start physically abusing you, they know they already have you under their control mentally and emotionally so you're less likely to leave. It starts in the mind.

My best friend hid her abuse for a long time because she knew what her family's reaction would be.. she was terrified not only of him, but of losing those who really loved her due to their reaction. When someone is being abused and comes to you, keeping calm and reassuring and NOT reacting psychically can make a major difference. They've suffered violence, they don't want or need anymore.. it was heartbreaking, but she did the legal route and it benefited her more than her dad handling the situation. Her dad is still with her and that monster has been gone for over 8 years, he's abusing someone else now sadly..It's a double edged sword.

The “I won’t do it again” is classic and it reminded me of a book I read recently, “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover. There’s this one thing I earnestly hope those in an abusive relationship understand and remember. Your partner does not necessarily have to be a bad person to be abusive towards you or anyone else. It might be a way of dealing with traumatic experiences or there could be other explanations to their behavior, BUT that doesn’t mean their abusive behaviors are acceptable, it’s NOT. It’s NOT ok for you to suffer, to be abused to bear the brunt of it all.

To those who do know abuse victims, you will always make excuses for them, you believe they will change, you invested so much that ending it is terrifying because they make you feel without them you are nothing, you are afraid you will never find someone to love you and your scared to be lonely.
You blame everyone for getting in your business, they isolate you from everyone you care about and care about you and soon you become almost like them. Bitter, cold, abusive and rude.
Never ask an abuse victim why they don’t leave. Just be there for them whenever they need it and when they make the decision to leave because they need you more than ever

I like to believe I could never get caught in an abusive relationship because they’re suffocating. I’ve gotten really, REALLY good at recognizing toxic behavior and although it is SO addictive to stay with the abusive person because when they’re not abusive, you love who and what they are…those moments that they break you down and make you cry are enough for me to Chuck up the deuces. NO ONE should ever hurt you and make you question your self-worth!! No one should make you ALWAYS feel at fault. No one should make you dread waking up in the morning. Get really good at learning to live without certain people. It’s hard at first, it’s like withdrawal but if you can, get you some distance between y’all and the longer you spend outside of their influence, the sooner you realize DAMN! I’m happier away from this person! I can survive without this person! Being around them is like being in a black hole where everything is warped in a way that benefits THEM. Get outside the black hole and readjust to reality. They are not everything and you are not the monster they make you out to be. You can find love outside of them, even if it’s just love for yourself. This goes for men and women. Stay safe out there bros.

it's part of being in an abusive relationship. She's been manipulated to the point of still loving the person she met and not the guy he turned out to be. She didn't want to cause a scene and she was still very much afraid. This stuff can get messy. I defended my stalker even when he nearly got my family in big legal trouble, and it took my mom-an abuse survivor, mind you-blocking his number to get me to finally learn to stand up for myself. When we're kind and trust people, people can take advantage of you. Zora was a kind soul that got taken advantage of.

I had to step away from this and think about it. There are several things wrong here. These parents raised good kids, they taught them see something, say something. One, if that had been my friend or relative getting hit, there is no way i am going for back up, i would have hauled off and hit him. Two, going back to the adults to tell them what happened was enough time for the other girl to get her story together and cover for what happened. Three, whatever the conversation was about between the girl and guy was making the guy feel less than a man, feeling inferior to his girlfriend and that is not what men do as society dictates. Four, it's a matter of self esteem with the girl who was hit. He hits me because he lives me. Admitting to the abuse means there is something wrong with the relationship and it will end and she will be alone. Five, i am all four a man standing up for the girl whether it's a father, uncle, brother. Again society dictates a girl or lady does not raise her fists in anger, it's the man's job. A girl or woman should be able to defend themselves.

Frankly, loving yourself and being single is the best to come by and having great people around you. The point I'm trying to make is; do not give up on love. Some people want it, some people run from it, and some people want to feel bonded. Like a family relative or best friend who could be there by your side till old age.
Be careful when love comes running after you instead of waiting for the main obstacle course. Some very ugly, rude, nasty and plain insensitive people who have to much uncorrupted sins about themselves when the word "love" is used in their presence. Some would abuse and take advantage of those who don't have enough backbone. Just be patient and don't try too hard when someone asks you out. Most murderers in prison fought their powerful urges to kill others for years and did everything in their power not to lose control, and here you are advocating for seriously injuring someone for merely slapping someone? Some people are in prison right now for defending themselves from harm. I got interrogated by police for being shot near (i.e. maybe you're a potential school shooter and want to get revenge; it's not normal to send an email asking people to leave you alone) while the shooters never were questioned.

Speaking as a Domestic Violence Survivor, abusers go for your weaknesses and your insecurities, even some that you never knew that you had, and they play on them. Then they start to slowly isolate you from your friends, family, etc..., anyone who can build you up, and show you the abuser's true colors. They'll fix it to where you're totally dependent on them for everything, and some will even tell lies on you, and make you look like the monster. I was lucky to blessed with a strong survivor instinct, and the first time my abuser laid his hands on me, I started making a plan to leave him, and when the time came, I grabbed my daughter, and ran with her. It was like Mission Impossible getting back to Germany to my parents, but we did it. They say that they won't do it again, but they always do. There's a honeymoon phase, and then they're right back to their same old tricks. You never know who's going to come through the door Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. You remember how you use to be before you met them, and you grieve for your old self, and you're mad, because you didn't see through your abusers lies. Just know that it's not your fault ever, because abusers are very convincing, and they're also great actors. When they do hit you, and you have children, or want children, think about what you'd do if someone abused your daughter or son, and had them scared all the time to make a mistake, and you'll know that you'd want to beat that person to a bloody pulp, so be an example for your children, and when you see a chance to leave, take it.

It gives me hope that so many people in the comments section recognize the signs of abuse and understand why victims of abuse may behave in ways that seem incongruous to those of us not under the spell of an abuser. It is far more complicated than simply telling someone to leave their abuser when they hit them. By the time it escalates into physical violence, the abuser has already done a number on them psychologically. And, of course, not all abuse is physical. Abuse comes in many forms. But I have hope that more people are aware of domestic violence so it's less of a taboo topic.
