The Mueller Report: Glenn Greenwald vs. David Cay Johnston on Trump-Russia Ties, Obstruction & More

- The Justice Department has released a redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller’s 448-page report detailing Russian meddling in the 2016 election, the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia and President Trump’s attempts to impede the special counsel’s investigation. The report states the campaign “expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts,” but Mueller concluded, “the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.” Mueller also outlined at least 10 instances where Trump attempted to impede the special counsel’s investigation, but Mueller came to no definitive conclusion on whether Trump broke the law by obstructing justice. In the report, Mueller suggests that this is a decision for Congress to make. We host a debate on the report’s findings between two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists: Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept and David Cay Johnston, who has covered Donald Trump since the 1980s. His most recent book is “It’s Even Worse Than You Think: What the Trump Administration Is Doing to America.”

Unbiased? No way
@@HeyGuy4321 I have no doubt Amy Goodman does have her biases, but the discussion here I thought was very fairly moderated. In the end, both Glen and David made concessions to one another, yet held firm to key points: From Glen's view, there was no evidence of collusion and impeachment was off the table (though it did happen, but without conviction, rendering the process mostly symbolic). David's point on the conduct of Trump being foul is also significant, but also a well known, longterm component of his character. For me, the most meaningful part of the whole dialog was made by Glen pointing out the similarly appalling actions by the Dems. Trump is clearly a foul, morally bankrupt man, but if the other side is doing much the same just in a "nicer" way, what difference does it make? Both sides of the aisle have been selling out the citizenry for 50 years. Maybe it's time to fight and do our duty as citizens to hold our representatives to account. The reason some Democrats are against impeachment is because it would divide the country even more than it is.
An important thing about this Mueller report “hoopla” is that it is covering up the problem of Trump’s increasing display that he can not perform his duties. The slurring of his words, trying again and again to get common words right, etc is a problem. When he struggled with the words oranges/origins- I just felt sad. If that had happened to my parent, I would have them examined by a neurologist. If we see it this much when he is publicly speaking, how many times is it happening when a camera is not on him.

@Joe Publico Greenwald is a quandary. He appears frequently on Fox News(?), and Fox loves him. Here, he is obfuscating by over-inflating. He side steps by blaming others. The issue here is simple. @@xxcelr8rs Oh, you are so deluded!
@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 Projection, that is hallmark of the loud left.
Two points that Glenn could've better addressed:
1) Why would someone "lie, deny, and cover up?" Isn't that proof of a "guilty conscience" or some underlying crime?
Of course not! In an environment in which any "contact" at all with any Russian person has been essentially criminalized in the court of public opinion, the motive to lie about such encounters is clear: to avoid the *appearance* of impropriety. If my wife tonight accuses me of having an affair with a colleague at work, I may not want to disclose that I had lunch with that colleague yesterday or that I talked with her for twenty minutes over the water cooler today, but that doesn't mean that I'm actually guilty of having an affair. It simply means that I don't want to bring undue scrutiny upon myself. If even the most mundane interactions arouse suspicion, someone might decide to cover up even the most trivial encounters. You might say that even doing that is unethical, but it doesn't at all imply that someone is actually guilty of the original charge.
2) What makes Russia "a hostile foreign power"? The Russiagaters repeat this phrase ad nauseum, as if it holds some formal legal status, but I legitimately wonder how such a designation came about. Who declared war on Russia? When did that happen? It may be considered as such in the prevailing political discourse, but it's not a formal enemy in any legal sense. What makes collaborating with Russia any worse than collaborating with Ukraine? Or Israel? Or Saudi Arabia? Or the United Kingdom? Is there any legal basis for such a distinction? Or is it all just innuendo?

Exactly! But unfortunately that's exactly what Johnston argues, that lies _and_ denials are evidence of guilt, he repeats that multiple times. Such shoddy grasping-at-straws reasoning.
It's easy to imagine that some would lie about a meeting with Russians when the "Have You Met Any Russians?!" Police come pounding at their door even if a lied-about meeting was not collusion, simply because they're afraid and want to avoid being drawn into the investigation which for all they know might wrongfully conflate the meeting as collusion. @pitu toup Except this is the exact misrepresentation Glenn used, he failed to mention that one was asking to commit a crime while the other was asking for information.
This Johnston guy has too much of a hard on for Trump
Although I tend to agree much more with Glenn Greenwald, I really appreciate this civilized and informative, in-depth discussion of the two points of view. Vastly superior to the usual 30 second sound bites in the MSM.
Martians! LOL!!!! Exactly. You can't prove a negative.
I consider Greenwald an American hero, but he's gone too far here in simply brushing aside the several instances of obstructions of Federal investigation by a sitting president. To your point, though, Mueller would not have included that language for the mere purpose of confirming it's not possible to prove a negative. I think page 10 of his report is telling:
"The investigation did not always yield admissible information or testimony, or a complete picture of the activities undertaken by subjects of the investigation. Some individuals invoked their Fifth Amendment right against compelled self-incrimination and were not, in the Office' s judgment, appropriate candidates for grants of immunity. The Office limited its pursuit of other witnesses and information-such as information known to attorneys or individuals claiming to be members of the media-in light of internal Depa11ment of Justice policies. See, e.g., Justice Manual§§ 9-13.400, 13.410. Some of the information obtained via court process, moreover, was presumptively covered by legal privilege and was screened from investigators by a filter ( or "taint") team. Even when individuals testified or agreed to be interviewed, they sometimes provided information that was false or incomplete, leading to some of the false-statements charges described above. And the Office faced practical limits on its ability to access relevant evidence as well-numerous witnesses and subjects lived abroad, and documents were held outside the United States.
Further, the Office learned that some of the individuals we interviewed or whose conduct we investigated-including some associated with the Trump Campaign---deleted relevant communications or communicated during the relevant period using applications that feature encryption or that do not provide for long-term retention of data or communications records. In such cases, the Office was not able to corroborate witness statements through comparison to contemporaneous communications or fully question witnesses about statements that appeared inconsistent with other known facts.
Accordingly, while this report embodies factual and legal determinations that the Office believes to be accurate and complete to the greatest extent possible, given these identified gaps, the Office cannot rule out the possibility that the unavailable information would shed additional light on (or cast in a new light) the events described in the report."
No, but there are certainly instances where an inability to convict does not prove someones innocence... Think of the OJ Simpson trial.
There is a reason why the legal system uses the terms Guilty or Not Guilty... courts don't find people to be innocent.
... Also, Glenn knows all this. This is why I think he's being disingenuous on this issue (at the very least) and a partisan hack.
TIL OJ couldn't possibly have done it.
Lying isn't evidence of crimes. People also lie to gain. Like telling white lies about someone to get them to like you more for whatever reason. What a weird argument from Johnston.
Greenwald SMOKED Johnston. 😂😂😂😂
Smoked him and packaged him for sale at the Sunday farmer’s market!!
Sure, when you're a shameless and duplicitous liar like Greenwald, I guess it's easy to "smoke" the people debating you when they come with evidence and live in reality
@@JackAShepherd Character assassination... the product of objective thinking. Well done!
Ladies and gentlemen your winner
Glenn greenwald🔥👌
Good job Glenn!! As always!! Not much can be said of the other part... Neoliberal Democrats GFY!!
@Fagus Grandifolia provide empirical evidence
Johnstons whole career is crying about Trump. What a bad choice

Love your videos!
David Cay Johnston just keeps moving those goalposts. Does he not realize that this will help Trump get reelected? SMH
Russell Branham racist
Trump was simply defending himself from a stupid MOB!

Really? Democracy now, is deepstate wake the fuck up..
Also why do you have Amy as the author of democracy dies in darkness? It’s a Washington post motto, and Jeff Bezos, owns the Washington post, of which the C.I.A owns Jeff Bezos..600 million in ads for the cia? lol if This show is CIA shill, who isn't?
Greenwald and Chomsky are recurring guests on there and the entire The Intercept team has a history of calling out the deep state consistently and more aggressively than pretty much any credible media I know of.
18:35 That's where I split with Glen. "The whole thing was a hoax." Dozens of crimes were found and passed on to other agencies because this is a criminal organization. He should answer the question of if he believed the investigation should have EVER happened AT ALL back in June 2016.
"Dozens of crimes were found" - none of which involved collusion or conspiracy with Russians. That's important to point out, because that's what Glenn's talking about, and he's right.
He did he said it was necessary in fact. He just differs in that he actually trusts the findings of the report. It's odd to call up an investigation then when the results don't mean your expectations after 3 years to then question the person your own party chose to lead such investigation. All circus no bread. But we'll keep fighting for the crumbs...
Glenn was right
Love Glenn Greenwald... 💯 won me over for his objectivity.
Thanks, Glenn, for your support of Donald Trump. Good job.
marte thompson support of the truth you partisan hack.
He said in his conclusion that Trump is a danger and a menace to the republic... I wish more supporters would see this as well.
I wish Greenwald would dial down the smugness, really doesn't help his arguments.
yeah ya just want to slap the hell out of him.
Smugness IS his "argument".
He can't help it. He's always a smug prick.
He is more pro Russian then any Russian I know
After three years of being attacked by his fellow liberals in msm for the offense of reporting accurately, he deserves to be as smug as he wants.
David Cay: (Just because they didn't find anything, doesn't mean DJT isn't guilty. It just means we couldn't find anything after almost 3 years). Holy fuck, let it go already!

Well said Mr David
This is so frustrating when the real emoluments violations come from Israel and Saudi Arabia, there's actual evidence of that.
That's why the entire conspiracy theory is a distraction. Who gives an f if Trump colluded or obstructed. They should have impeached him year 1 on emoluments alone.
@@elizabethsmusicandarts1590 I give a fuck about Russia launching cyber-attacks. Putin must remain in power, for the same reason as Trump: the day they step down's the day justice's gonna catch up with them for corruption..... I agree on the emoluments clause btw.
