Why A Gang Of Spanish Grannies Covered Their Local High Street In Woolly Blankets

- In 2019, in a small town in southern Spain, a group of women started to crochet a giant woolly blanket. Not for themselves; not for their friends or families; but for their local shopping street. Four years later, the blanket has reached 500 square metres and the unstoppable grannies have already started on a second street. Why are they doing it? And how big will it get? I went to Andalusia to witness the woolly wonder for myself...

For those who do not crochet and wonder why Tim keeps going on about grannies: a (mostly) small square of crochet is called a "granny square". Often, crochet blankets are made by putting together lots of these "grannies".
Thank you for teaching us something new
Important detail Anna!
Granny is also short for Grandmother. And Grannies are often big fans of knitting and crochet.
I didn't know that, but I kind of just didn't question it. It seemed like Tim was simply noting that people who crochet are often grannies.
@@ReubenAotearoa_ Which is exactly the pun, yes ;-)
A very closely knitted community.
Always exchanging yarns.
Well, the term is actually "close-knit," but I'm just knit-picking.
Bad......😃😃
This thread.
😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Good story! Needles to say, Crochetists use hooks, not needles.
And "hooks" directly translate in french to "crochets"
the story had me hooked 😄
I don’t know why he didn’t make any hooker jokes…
That idea of covering the street with some sort of canapy is actually a great idea... We should have something like that here in Brazil. As it is people simply walk on the side of the street that has shadow, which makes it crowded
Many European cities could also adapt this technique, it's tiring to walk in pedestrian zones where there's not shade at all and scorching heat for the entirety of summer.
We need more trees in cities
The problem is that spanish and european streets are narrower so the quantity of cloth needed is way lower than in other places.
When we even have pedestrian roads, that is. Except on old towns, Brazil pretty much still follows a "car-first" approach to urban planning (and is very much not alone at that). Most of Europe is "old towns", so they have to live with the narrow roads and make cities more pedestrian-friendly as a necessity.
I think that Brazil does have tunnels
Cheers Tim, your commentary had me in stitches!
Please tell me the pun was intended….
He carefully wove them into the script.
Oh wool you please stop!
Really? I found the presentation just sew sew.
@@seatedliberty Really? I thought it was a good yarn!
Tim's videos are my quilty pleasure
I'm here for the good pins!
Blanket statement?! Man, when Tim finds out who wrote that, there's gonna be hell duvet.
Interviewer: "What's it like to deal with these Hell's Grannies?"
Policeman (Graham): "Pension day's the worst. Soon as they get it, they blow the lot! On milk... tea... sugar... a tin of meat for the cat..."
Right., stop that. It's silly.
Here we go:
1. The Tim Traveller Theme
2. Vision On - Gallery Theme*
3. Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
4. Art Attack Theme
5. Art Attack Theme (Copycat)
6. Vision On - Gallery Theme (Again)
Cheers Tim!
* I didn't know the Vision On theme was by The Noveltones - Left Bank Two - until I checked it on youtube for this. You learn so much watching these videos.
Now I am going back to watch again. I mean listen again.
Thought that was Katy Perry, but no Wish You Were Here theme?
Did anyone ever ask for a whimsical piano cover of Hot N Cold? No. Am I glad it happened? Yes.
2:41 Genius song choice :D
What a great idea! Here in Northern Germany, knitting and crochetting maniacs cover trees, lamp posts and other things which I find quite strange. The blankets (to provide shade) make a lot more sense, are beautiful and the "grannies" do not have to be bored. 🍒
My parents, here in Texas, had their car door handles crocheted last Winter. Along with every other car on the street. They found out it was the neighbor at the end of the street exuding maximum rebellious granny energy.
@@foxylovelace2679 LOL!!! What a crazy idea!🍒
We have something similar but it’s post boxes that look like they have hats or tea cosies on them.
@@foxylovelace2679 now I imagine a granny dressed as a ninja. crochtting the entire street by night. First the car handles next the lamp post and soon the entire street it self.
They must be affiliated with there Dutch partners here. You also see it on trees and lamppost. Or it's the same people but on holiday.
Thanks for covering this, Tim. You've now got me hooked on the idea of consuming the local tapas under the blankets... or should I say canapés under canopies?
Hi Sir, good video. Everyone needs to be vigilant when visiting/planning to visit Myanmar and Cambodia. What's happening there (cyber scam and detainment of workers) is horrible.

Your pedantic sense of humour is what keeps me coming back. Keep travelling!
Thank you, Tim, for having such a positive effect on my mental health. Your videos provide solace in these turbulent times, as well as a snippet of culture for those of us marooned on Brexit island.
As an avid crocheter (far from a grandma age) I was so excited about this video! My guess is that a lot of the blankets are also made from cotton, I doubt they use the expensive wool.
I love how it spreads shade as well as the art of crochet, cannot recommend it enough as a hobby. Thank you, Tim!
Thank you! According to the articles I found online, the blankets are made from recycled yarn
@@TheTimTraveller As if the project wasn't awesome enough! ❤️
Un abrazo desde Alhaurín de la Torre!! Great video as always, i'm glad you made a video of my beautiful town 🥰
One small street in my hometown, Jinan, China, is also occasionally covered like this in summer when it's turned into a market. It's a very nice way to keep ourselves cool. For information it's just east to the old town across the river.
Spainsbury's LOL genius
You always weave a good yarn.
The "drunken tetris" is a children's building bloc named plus plus
Well this was absolutely fun and charming. So happy to see new content as I have literally binged your whole catalog of videos (at least 2x)... I'm getting old and most likely will not be able to travel anymore, so watching you travel is my proxy... you may mean more to some of us than you might realize. No pressure. Anyway, great video,... good laughs, made my day. Thank you!
How extremely pretty and creative. Well done Eva and her class
I love that at 2:42 he chose to make the background music a piano rendition of hot n cold by katy perry. what a ledge.
Great idea. Looks a lot more interesting than plastic. I wonder how long the colours last there. Here in Queensland the UV will probably bleach it in no time.
I'm in rural NSW and we did a yarn bombing event here about five years ago. Some of the pieces are still up and still quite vibrant. I'm honestly surprised by how nice some of the pieces still look.
Plastic has the same bleaching issue though, so I'd much rather see this great alternative pick up more steam! Trees are best for shade, but Woolly blankets are also pretty solid.
It would mostly bleach the top, the part facing the shade could keep its colours way longer if there isn’t too much sunlight reverberated.
Tim, you are a complete legend. Please carry on doing what you do and don't stop making videos.
It never ceases to amaze me how you root out these weird and wacky stories. You're amazing, and so are your videos.
Cheers Scott!
I love the eclectic range of things you cover..
As an avid crocheter myself (from Canada, not Spain), this video is REALLY cool and I LOVE this idea!
Props for the Alan Partridge quote “needles to say” 😂 If that wasn’t on purpose it still made many brits happy 😊
Pretty sure he was alluding to crochet needles
@@u1zha except they're not called needles but hooks (this is TTT's channel, so some pedantry is allowed, hopefully; -))
the idea is absolutely charming, but the cuteness of your narration turns an otherwise middle-of-nowhere-southern-spanish-town into my next visiting destination!
Whilst I loved the story of the crochet, and that's something I never thought I'd ever hear myself say, for some reason I couldn't stop my mind wandering back the The Gallery on Vision On back in the 70s. Can't think why...
We should do this in Northern Europe. I know our summers don't get as hot but we could use some shade during the heat waves.
Until some miserable sod in the local planning Dept. says NO,NON.Nien etc still a good idea though.😅
@Deadpoppin Oh I meant like, France, Benelux, Germany, not fucking Norway, my fault, I guess I'm talking about Western Europe, I don't know.
Love the musical nod to those of us old enough to recognise 'Left Bank Two' used in Take Hart & Vision On!
i Tim, always enjoy your videos, as much the delivery as the content. I wondered what your viewers would make of Le Perthus/ El Perthus. A small border town where the customs hall is at the end of the main shopping street but the border runs along a gutter before you reach it. So, you have Spanish shops at Spanish prices on one side of the road and French on the other. If you park on the Eastern side you are in France and pay the French for parking, but alight in Spain, while the other vehicle occupants alight in France. Duty free allowances apply and if you head north, i.e. into France you can be stopped and checked randomly if the Duanes are around. Sometimes there is a huge paramilitary presence, mostly either nobody or one person checking vehicles heading north. These are looking for the ladies being trafficked into France where prostitution is illegal. Just a thought, keep up the good work! Richard,
A drunk granny playing Tetris is something I would pay a lot of money to see.
As a crocheter I snorted with laughter
Tim, thank you for being adorable and laid-back ❤️❤️❤️ and crochet
Tim spins a good yarn with this blanket coverage, and not only that but the chronic elaborate punning in the following comments had me in stitches ... Not to be a killjoy but I have to wonder if the materials take a beating from the weather and how long they will hold up and how much ongoing maintenance and repair it requires. Apparently the materials are put up just for the summer season, that must be some work. The umbrellas hanging upside down would be more easily managed for installation and piecemeal replacements although winds might dislodge them, imagine pedestrians imperiled by falling umbrellas. Certainly a creative project that undoubtedly attracts tourists!
It hurts me that Tim doesn't have millions of subscribers and millions of views on each video
He's doing pretty well, I subscribed somewhere between his 666 subscriber video and his 1000 subscriber video...
But he has the best subscribers. We'll all go one day, and when Tim goes (Peace Be Upon Him) he can go in peace knowing 'I did a good job'
Loved the "Hot and Cold" cover
Having Left Bank Two on paino in the background brought me much joy. 😊
Thanks Tim, fascinating info, I think you covered everything. Now I'm hooked.
Honestly, this looks absolutely amazing! I love it.
Love when your videos drop in my subscriptions. Can't afford to travel, so it's great to see these funny places!
An elegant solution by the grannies
2:22 "One of the grannies got very drunk playing Tetris.." 😂😂😂
As an avid crocheter, this warms my heart. i once made a granny flat decor at my brother's restaurant. when it finally closed (just before the covid pandemic hit), someone stole it. Tsk!
Great video as always though, Tim!
Nice idea playing "hot and cold" on the background
I loved the idea of those blankets!
You covered that story very well.
Loving the pink piano accompaniment et aussi the entendre double´.
The crochet is needed everywhere ! This is a really good idea , we don't have enough shade
This was my favorite episode of Community.
"Blanket statement" at the end got me, good one.
Great local solution to the problem! Not to rain on anyone's parade, but wouldn't they be worried about the colors fading in the direct sunlight? I also wonder if acrylic yarn (if that's what they used) breaks down over time if exposed to direct sunlight, as I know a lot of plastics don't hold up well to heavy UV exposure -- though if they were motivated by a desire to use less plastic, I imagine they stuck to natural fibers like wool or cotton.
Sod the Crochet streets, I really wanna go to Spainsburys!
Keeps the grannies busy !
thanks for the two giant LOLs, I love terrible word play! 🤣😂
Seems like the sort of thing we should copy over in California, brilliant idea! Very cool
(...though finding a street narrow enough may prove a challenge)
You'll just have to make some Texas sized blankets.
Now, if someone could accomplish this over an American highway, that would be a sight to behold.
Blanket coverage. Yep. That just made the video. Concidering the excessively hot weather we have had in Britain this summer, we could have done with a few of these in my home town.
Hot N Cold on the piano was a surprise although thematically appropriate
Ok Spainsburys is quite good.
Gotta love the 'hot n' cold' piano version you were playing in the background, I adore the details in your videos!
A true master of spinning a yarn!
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing it with all of us!
Adding this on my to visit and knit/crochet in public list. Yarn bombing put to an awesome use! (I was knitting a sock when watching this.) ... Tim, you forgot one good pun ... "going loopy" . There's also nice puns with 'hooks' (crochet uses one hook, knitting uses two (or more) needles.
Needs more Purple Train moquette patterns \m/
Thanks for this awesome story, Tim. ¡Muchas gracias!
Just awesome as always Tim a weekly vacation, with friends.
Absolutely love your videos Tim, top notch content 👍🏼

Thanks TTT for this informative video! Best wishes to u and your friend
Amazing great idea, I love it. We could use more like that.
Glad you covered this with a no sheet review.
Thanks Tim
Absolutely brilliant, as ever! Your commentary had me in stitches!
Nice video Tim!
it's beautiful if you look up, and also down at the pretty patterns. Great plan, and seems a lovely town for a nice lunch!
It's all fun & games until all of Spain is covered in a granny blanket, then the world will be next. A global crochet blanket will entomb us all!
Your videos allways make me smile🙂
First song: Gallery music from Hart Beat. Second song: Art Attack theme. I was so pleased to recognise both of these from my childhood.
Your humor made my day!
