This tutorial will teach you how to use Voice Control on any Mac running Mac OS Catalina or later. This accessibility feature allows anyone to control their Mac using only their voice. This class focuses on the most important aspects of how to navigate your Mac and we're even going to create a few custom commands to help make things even easier.
I'd like to acknowledge that this feature wouldn't be possible without the hard work of Sarah Herrlinger, Global Accessibility Chief at Apple.👍

As someone who recently broke both wrists in a motorcycling accident, but is still responsible for his graduate thesis, I think you deeply for producing this video.
I'm really glad it helped 👍
I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This Dictation options are really helpful to me. Thanks for sharing and make this video. Greetings from Chile
I love the dictation! I use it on my iphone
Thank you so much for this video! As someone with a hand disability, and I've been trying to learn this on Catalina for a year now, I was finally able to get access to the phrases I needed to make this useful. Your video is so well presented, I like the heads up on the commercials and really enjoyed the content and learning. So much gratitude, thank you thank you thank you!
first i have seen a youtube introduce a commercial break.. very clean. nicely done.
I like you open donations to ANY amount, AND offer mail-in options. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽
I was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. It is greatly affecting my hands, and my ability to type comfortably. As it's only going to get worse, I decided to learn how to control my Mac early, while I still have some hand mobility. Thank you for this video.
New to Mac but an avid viewer of your channel here in UK. Well done
Great tutorial! Thanks for the concise instructions. Another use case for voicecontrol is for people like me with RSI. It is a boon for my aching wrists.
This is me! So much so that I've managed to damage my nerves! I cannot thank you enough David for this tutorial, I would be in a deep deep deep funk without it!
Yes! It helps my elbows.
You're a life-saver! I couldn't find a printable list ANYwhere!!
I rarely......almost never donate like this. But your vids have been so educational/helpful to me personally and my small business that I’m definitely sending a donation. Please keep doing what you do so well!
Thank you so much for recognizing my efforts 🙏 I am so glad they have helped.
This is an excellent tutorial. The monologue is precise and unambiguous.
Thank you so much! This is the most informative video on voice control. I have MS and use voice control all the time. Nobody ever explain why Siri doesn't work with Voice control. I am very grateful and looking forward to learn all the new information.
I cannot figure out how to use drag commands.
So glad to hear it was helpful!
Super useful video, thank you so much! Thank you, too, for not putting the pdf behind an email input requirement. I really appreciate that. I find those really irritating and often just navigate away.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. I use VoiceOver so much on my iPad and it is great to see how it works on a Mac. I have quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy as well as 4 vision impairments. VoiceOver is also great for having books and documents read out.
Thanks for the pdf David. I looked all over for that. Apple should have done that.
Your video was so informative. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for that video I'm glad to report the keyboard now has numbers enabled
Great, comprehensive video - very helpful for someone with a fractured wrist who still has to get work done. But I was unable to download the PDF guide. Page indicated "file in owners trash."
I can’t help wondering who the people are who thumb down your excellent videos. I would like to volunteer as their therapist.
This video is great - thank you - do you have any hints about how to get rid of pop ups on the iphone - show numbers doesn't work.
Thank you for this tutorial! Apple listened and the virtual keyboard supports the show number feature now.
This will help me immensely, thanks David.
Thank you for your gift.
Hello David, I'm a pretty savvy tech guy especially Apple stuff. I owned an apple ][+ in 1981. One area that remains confusing to me is the interface between voice control and dictation. Can they work together? This is unclear to me.
Back in the day i could use Dragon dictation and say new paragraph or scratch that and the action would be done. I could also create voice macros like prof signature which was awesome. Today it seems that dictation on the mac lives in a separate universe and does not respond to voice navigation and vice versa.
If I'm incorrect about this, I'd like to know how to use them together. Can you help me without having to book a tech therapy session? I do not have emotional blocks with tech. My masters is in pure mathematics and i have 40 years experience in personal transformation and I'm a master astrologer.
I may in fact be able to help you with your production studio if you're open to chatting.
Dude, you're so awesome.
So it looks like somebody from Apple heard your request, when you open the virtual keyboard and show numbers there are numbers for each individual key. They also added a mode for spelling the command is "spelling Mode"
Great video and congratulations for your new production company!
Thank you
Dry nice David..I’m sure this will help a lot of viewers...
Thanks, David. Great teaching!
I’m not paralyzed, but I have chronic tendinitis in both arms it seems. I hope this can make things less stressful.
You are wonderful. Thank you for this.
This was very helpful. Thank you!
I was excited for this feature due to the improved navigation but I'm very disappointed to find out that dictation doesn't seem to recognize text inputs on most non-Apple applications and thus the dictate commands are not available. Is there any way to fix this? This seems like a regression from previous versions, at least then I had limited ability to enter text via voice.
Agree completely. The dictation has got worse, ironically, rendering many of these functions quite useless. It also seems to dictate nonwords which it then cannot recognise when you tried to edit by voice. It really should not be in the accessibility section if it cannot be used by disabled people come on Apple sort it out!
@@serinadelmar6012 I completely agree Voice control on the Mac is terrible and I hate the fact that dragon for Mac was discontinued because I could do so much more with that program than I could with Voice control there's no way to train vocabulary which is terrible I really miss dragon for Mac but it no longer works sadly
This is an incredible video. My wife has a genetic condition that will likely cause her to lose the use of her hands by the time she is 60 so I am trying to learn this feature inside and out for her and others that I can pass it on to. Which leads to my question. How do I click and hold a modifier key such as control, option, command, etc.? If an app requires you to left-click and hold while pressing and holding option while you move the mouse, how would that work? I use a trackball so I can move the cursor and click the mouse but how can I hold down option without my other hand?
Thx for the help.
After hours looking around I found this helper for easily making VoiceOver flick through next/previous paragraphs on a macbookpro laptops.
By default, the VO-Shift-Page Up/Down are the needed shortcuts. But on a macbookpro that involves using the additional Fn key by default (Control+Option+Fn+Shift+Up/Down Arrow), because there's no default PageUp/Down keys on macbookpro laptops.
I found the following workaround:
**Keyboard Commander**
Keyboard Commander allows you to configure custom keyboard shortcuts to perform VoiceOver commands, run scripts, and open apps, eliminating the need to locate them manually and thus greatly streamlining your workflow. Commands can be configured in **VoiceOver Utility > Commanders > Keyboard Commander**.
By default, commands for opening Mail and Safari and running scripts for announcing the date and time and the number of unread Mail messages are included. For more information, check out this AppleVis podcast.
Would be great if you could make a video about the Keyboard Commander.
Showing how to assing a single key to the 'Read next Paragraph' and 'Read previous paragraph' commands (or any other VoiceOver commands).
So that one only need to press a single key per command!
Thanks again. Take care and be well!
this is perfect tutorial thanks!
The tip about how to activate Siri on the Mac, rather than on iPhone is a gem!
Thanks for a great video. I'm keen to download the pdf of voice commands but it only comes up as iMovie voice commands
Thanks for the video!
Thanks!
Great video. Your best yet
As always good job, BTW are you wearing eye makeup?
Great video my good man!!
😂 I was able to voice control my ibm486 dx-266 in the early to mid 90s dragon speech recognition it was awesome then hopeful it has exponentially improved
A perfect tutorial video Sir.👍👏
Please upload FindMy offline tracking tutorial video between iOS and MacOS devices as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Thanks. I am paralyzed myself from a spinal cord injury. This may come in very handy for me.
How are you getting on with Mike? Also disabled and really struggling with apples accessibility, i'm not just there astonishing grammar!
serina delmar Doing quite well. Thankfully Apple has so many good accessibility features that I am able to take advantage of. How about yourself? What is the nature of your disability?
Well done, david.
Salamat!
Very cool vid. They dont predefine key macros???? Can i drag and drop? Can i scroll a long page gradually?
I am in increasing pain when i type, maybe i buy an apple. Ms aint so good
So many great tips!
Awesome tutorial! Is there a difference between using the accessibility voice control feature to dictate text and the dictation feature that can be enabled under keyboard settings? Thx!
Good information
I always enjoy your videos but I will say that currently Voice control is terrible compared to Dragon I hate the fact that they discontinued dragon for the Mac I've noticed with voice control there's no way to train your vocabulary so therefore it doesn't understand certain terms and words I really hope that they take the time to improve it I have even found a bug with the program do you think they will improve the program within time what do you think I will just be stuck with a terrible experience with voice control? I would love to hear your thoughts on this thank you
Hi I found this video when I was trying to learn voiceover how does voiceover interact with voice command I’m blind and I need to do voice over in the most effective way with Siri and maybe even with this voice control do you have a video that will show how to integrate all three systems voice control Siri and iOS voiceover on the Mac thank you
GREAT VID and beautiful introduction!! Wow. But! Could you PLEASE tell the ms. from Accesability with Apple. to make a -return to default mode- button...!!!! I am lost in what I did and there is no magic button to put all (!!) back to Apple default mode!! Thanks.
Hi David, I have an idea for another video. How to add another volume instead of a partition and install the prior OSX Mojave to it. Reason being that some software does not run on Catalina and the prior OS is needed temporarily.
Do they , apple, have phone support for disabled?.
Hello! Could you tell, please, how to remove voice control commands that system download (it's like 800-900 mb) when you use it for the first time?
Do I have to initiate voice control every time I start the computer or can I configure it to be there on start up so all my legally blind mother has to do is find the power button, wait for the computer to power up, and then start issuing voice commands such as "open zoom" in order to then initiate a pre-scheduled daily zoom meeting that I will schedule for her? So many decades into the hype about computers increasing accessibility for the disabled it still seems like a prehistoric struggle. The most obvious basic stuff just does not seem to be available -- but yet selecting fancy formatting on word processing documents is. Just grousing. Wading through the hot air bubbles of hype about all of this is stuff is debilitating especially when you just really desperately need it, not for convenience but actually almost for survival. Well I do hope you will see this comment and bother to answer it anyway. I am sure your video was very useful for people who are paralyzed, and I know that's mostly what it was made for. Blindness is a different challenge.
Why not just leave the computer running all day and then go to sleep? They're very energy efficient. If you'd like one-on-one coaching it is something I do. techtalkamerica.com/techtherapy
I'll will off course 🎉 support you 💯😊% sir , because you sir 😁 make a great content , which makes sense and people understand, i have trust me 😢😅 seen many people making content but failed miserably to achieve objectives, my friend is a apple product fan and he introduced me to your videos and 🎉 ❤ I love 😘 it , and I have lots to say but i think 🧐🤔 you know what I mean sir😊 Thank you and bless you 😊 keep up the good work 😊 I am Haksaw the awesome 😎
you can simply say right and left no need screen
You live in P town!! A great place to live. Hope you are safe and business is surviving.
My voice control became active during this video, it started to respond to commands in video show emoji and keyboard 😁
can you please tell me how to shut down my mac using voice command. < Is there any command for such action ? >
HEY DAVID ,thanku for the video.
But,I’ve a problem..,whenever I say “OPEN SIRI” it is taking “OPEN TV” instead .
What do I do?
I don't know why I can't find my voice control under accessibility on my MacBook Pro. HELP PLZ
voiceover is replacement for voice control
Any tips for typing numbers? I can't find a command that works.
I'm able to enable Voice Controls, but it's not working for me at all on my Mac. The mic shows up, but when I issue a command, it at first only responds after about two minutes, then eventually it doesn't respond at all. I've done all I can to fix it, but I'm at my wit's end. Any tips would be appreciated; thank you!
Same here!!! And the fans are running like they've never before. Can anyone please help!!!
Same here. It's even more is that this is being touted as accessibility when nobody who is actually disabled to say hass have been able to use it successfully hands-free. It's kind of amazing Apple even makes up words then flags them as spelling mistakes! That aside can I pull just make something usable can Apple Watch asked me something usable what is the point… android is getting closer by the minute.
Same with me
It is not working correctly for me. Hopefully there will be support for this online with MAC support!
Meg Gillis good luck with that
David, have you been to the macOS feedback page and requested this feature for Voice Control? I will do it if you will do it. If everyone that posted a comment on this video does it there will be more people asking for this feature and Apple will more likely implement it.
Yes. I submitted the request a few weeks ago. It would be great if others would follow suit.
Any new features/functionality for Voice Control in macOS Big Sur?
Hi Sir!
Could you please suggest some tips to free up unused memory and reduce unnecessary memory usage by several background activities on Mac for better optimization without using any third Party Applications?
And for clean up junk files...
Thank you.
I'm not him and I'm not able to fully answer your question without recommending apps or a ram upgrade, but you can easily manage your storage: Apple icon > About this Mac > Storage > Manage > Then navigate the menu that appears from there depending on what you wish to achieve. Make sure you create a backup first!
@@Catsincages Thanks.
Unfortunately, a lot of default voice commands doesn't work. Like Show Numbers, Show Commands. And also self-created Automator voice dictation. I don't why it's not working.
Other than more profits Why did Apple remove stationery from The Mail app?
I like to use this feature but it became very delayed its responses and the fan is running at full speed. Very frustrating.
Sailorforlife BESTTI me too, has anybody found a fix to this?
In doc I can't get the microphone to turn on to talk type. Any ideas??
Same
I tried but the voice control on my computer didn't work
Sorry, but I can't get any of this to work on my computer. Catalina is telling me that dictation doesn't work with Voice over, which makes this rather useless for me. Now I can't get dictation to work either.
is there a way to remove that microphone but keep it working ?
No not yet sadly
Dude you're selling a lot in such a short video
When dictation gets a word wrong and you try to correct, what do you do if the correct word or phrase is not in the list of options that pop up?
Edit, you should probably warn people how terrible the recognition accuracy is. Makes it even worse that correcting mistakes is so time-consuming. Not a very good option for hands-free.
And now the keyboard is numbered!
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I've used your I movie 🎥 video, great help. I learned a lot and very comfortable now on making videos.
Now I'm trying speech to type.
Like to talk with you sometime. I will send you some money 💰 in appreciation. Build your studio.
Rodney nelson
Ok, why doesn't this work for me? BUT when I play your vid it understands you and does what you say. What the heck is going on?
Definitely can relate, I feel your pain.
Can we use this on Websites? Doesn't seem to work
It's a bug I reported it to them they say that they're working on it
Can you answer the questions raised in the comments below
Can’t believe it weighs 249g incredible
3:08 start
video starts at 3:20 FYI
Cannot see PDF
Cant you just activate dictation and it shuts off the speech
Class starts 3:22
I hoped that the new voice control in Mac OS Catalina would replace my now-defunct DNS. After a few maddening hours, it was just good enough to almost work but not good enough to be useful. So sad. If you want to use voice commands to control a specific application, I think you will be very disappointed. Maybe in the next release.
They also need a way to train your vocabulary as a dragon user they have a long way to go in my opinion
.....aaaaaand right before I enter class....an ad.......for Amazon AR....😑......AGAIN 😡
how the f do I turn this off, I have disabled it yet its still there
no idea
scam "rewave" commercial displayed before this video. Second one in a row (free solar) Booo youtube.
Video starts at 3:11
You have the sexiest eyes ever.
Apple is a disaster when it comes. To voice activation. My Mac never gets anything right when I speak to it while Alex has no issues. Apple suck at voice recognition software.
That they do.
please get right to the point of the video.
Wow, takes 3 minutes before the tutorial starts.....
