My favorite story about Andre is that by the time he was 13 he was to big to fit on the school bus, so a kind neighbor with a big enough car drove him to school every day. That neighbor was the playwright Samuel Beckett, and I'm not kidding.

When they did the recent Quibi remake, that last scene was played by the director Rob Reiner’s dad Carl Reiner who sadly passed away the week before.

Peter Falk... in his most enDEARing role!! Those of us, of a certain age, knew him as the wiley TV detective, Columbo.

One of the stories that is often told about this movie is regarding the actor who played Inigo (Mandy Patinkin), and what that role meant to him. From the documentary, by the actor himself: "I lost my father in 1972. It just hit a chord with me… that I want my father back just like he does. The reason I made this movie was coming to fruition, which I was going to get the cancer that killed my father... And in my mind I feel that when I killed that six fingered man, I killed the cancer that killed my father, and for a moment he was alive… and my fairy tale came true."
I have heard this before and since I have, every single time this scene comes up and he wins it brings a tear to my eye... seriously. He should have gotten an award for that scene alone. It was PERFECT and too meaningful... you could tell the depth of emotion there.
Reports are that the other actor was legitimately terrified in that shot

When they were rehearsing it Christopher Guest told someone (director Rob Reiner? their swordsmanship coach? not sure) that he felt like Mandy Patinkin was really trying to kill him. Obviously Mandy managed to hold himself back from actually murdering a co-star, but he still found acting it out to be a cathartic experience.

I met Andre The Giant when I was ten years old when he was a Wrestler, It was the 70's and I had a really big Afro and he was was walking to the ring and when he passed by he patted my head and said "Soft", I laughed and put out my hand and he shook it with largest I have ever seen.
Dude looked like he could palm a watermelon!
My mom sat near him on an airplane but she didn’t speak to him.
My favorite part is when the grandfather says “As you wish.” I’m such a sap it still makes me cry.

In the novel, which was written by William Goldman who also wrote the screenplay, there is naturally enough much more detail and backstory for each of the characters.
The way Buttercup became engaged to Humperdinck was that he scoured the kingdom for the most beautiful woman among his subjects, and he found Buttercup.
the movie and the actors are soooo good, people most of the time forget to say how good and iconic the music and the soundtrack it.
Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits produced and arranged the soundtrack for The Princess Bride.
Absolutely, J-Man. As Michael Scheele below mentioned, some of the great Mark Knopfler's best film work. And don't forget Willy DeVille's 'Storybook story'. I think it won a Grammy or something.
Princess Buttercup...you loved her in Princess Bride...you hated her in Forrest Gump...
...ah. I saw gump first, no wonder I have a weird hatred for her. I just thought I was weird.
because Jenny took decades getting over the trauma of her abuse in Forrest Gump and had a privileged upbringing as Buttercup instead. Jenny lost her innocence at a young age but Buttercup was allowed to keep hers much longer

The grandfather is Peter Falk, he was a big star of Tv and Film in the US. His most famous role was the detective show Columbo. The grandson is played by Fred Savage, he would star in the show the Wonder Years during the late 1980bs and early 1990's(his younger brother would also star in as Corey in the tv show Boy meets world and its follow up Girl Meets world)
My favorite Falk movie is The Great Race (1965) he was also really good in Wings of Desire (1987)
Sadly they're remaking The Wonder Years.
Don't forget Fred Savage also starred in 'Wizard'(1989), a movie about NES gaming and promoting Super Mario Bros 3.

Mandy Patinkin put all the grief and rage for his father's recent death from cancer into that performance. Christopher Guest wasn't so much acting scared as legitimately worried Mandy Patinkin was going to kill him.
Well, Patinkin did lose his temper and slap Andre. If he'd do that do to a giant, what would he do to a normal sized man?
Inigo and Wesley's swordfight was actually one of the last scenes to be filmed.
It takes so much time and practice to learn their skills. Especially since they had to duel left-handed at first. But the final cut was totally worth it.
Fencing schools worldwide show their students the duel for proper visual techniques.
And the only stuntman used was for the bar flip in the arch.
If memory serves it took something like two weeks to choreograph & film that scene.

@@Caseytify The original choreographed sword fight didn't last long enough for Rob Reiner, so he had them extend the scene.
I was at the wedding of one of the UK National level fencers and as a conversation piece with other guests (nearly all top level fencers) I asked what was the best cinema sword fight and everyone of them said “the Princess Bride.” There were a lot of fencing in-jokes, for example a fencing master will often fight a pupil left handed to make it more even.
The masters they're talking about (Thibault, Capoferra, and Agrippa) are also real-life Renaissance fencing masters. Although the actual sword fighting itself doesn't make use of any historical technique and is vintage Hollywood swordplay a'la Errol Flynn (fitting, since the Great Bob Anderson, who taught Flynn, did the choreography).
They were trained left handed first.

Inconceivable does actually mean unbelievable. He's unable to conceive that possibility that the man in black won.
"Unbelievable" implies that you are able to conceive the idea...you'd need to do so in order to not believe in it. So it really doesn't mean the same thing as "inconceivable." But both words are used the same way informally.
I'm constantly asking people if they don't like the movie the Princess Bride. Since 1987, I've found 2 people. Everybody else, loved it.
Inconceivable! Honestly I never found anyone who didn't like the movie (or indeed the book, but it seems that is a much smaller class of person) so it seems inconceivable you actually found two!

I showed it to my mother! She couldn't stand it, but in my 26 years on this earth, she's the first person who didn't like it. One of my top 10 of all time!
Forget those people. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I suspect that those people who said they didn't like it formed their opinion from the title rather than watching the film.
This film shows off Andre the Giant's true personality. The gentle giant touched everyone he encountered. So many great stories about him from the other cast members. Billy Crystal became so close to Andre, that it inspired him to make the film, "My Giant." A really good movie to watch. ✌❤🌹
This is my #1 favorite movie. Wallace Shawn had a crippling fear of heights and during the filming of the " cliffs of insanity" scene he has a full blown panic attack. Andre hugged him and said "I'll never let anything bad happen to you" Wallace has not had a problem with heights since. Andre was a gentle Giant. I had the honor to have met him twice in the mid 1980's in Cleveland.
The cool than is the movie is just and grandpa telling his grandson he loves him in a way he know will not embarrass him.

That sword fighting scene is legendary. They really wanted to go over the top so Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin practiced for the entire production and that scene was last. Stunt doubles only for the gymnastics.
Fun fact the sword fighting was choreographed by the same people as the original star wars movies

He obviously improved as a choreographer since star wars.

The guy cracking you up is Billy Crystal with a lot of makeup on. You should watch some of his movies too. I'd start with City Slickers.
I'm not a huge Billy Crystal fan or anything, but, aside from movies where he only had a small supporting role (Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap), and animated movies (Monsters, Inc.), I think my personal favorite would be Throw Momma From the Train. Analyze This was pretty good, too.

It took me years to figure out that was Billy Chrystal. No one ever told me. This was before the internet days, of course. One day I was watching this and I just recognized some mannerisms and looked it up. Low and behold I was shocked!

I worked at a movie theater as an usher when this movie came out in 1987. My fellow ushers and I watched it so many times, every day, that we had all of the dialog memorized by heart and had a kind of game we'd play where one usher would start reciting lines, and one of the others of us would answer with the proper lines and so on. Movie goers who had seen the movie and witnessed us doing this, noticed and would often comment. lol
We did that with several movies, not just this one. Spaceballs and Hollywood Shuffle to name a couple of others.

Not even 4 minutes into this video. This is the greatest movie ever made. It can appeal to any age. It has everything in it. It's HIGHLY quotable. I have loved this movie every time I've watched it. I love watching people discover this absolute gem.
This is my favorite movie, and there are so many behind the scene stories that make it even better. One of my favorite moments, one most don't bring up, is the final main credit which says And Introducing Robin Wright. What an introduction.
Keep in mind we are getting the visual representation of what was in the book, until the hill, Wesley was called "the man in black" his disguise was good enough nobody recognized him.
The entire cast loved working on this ... Mandy Patinkin (Indigo Montoya) has said this was the best role he ever had.
And then Vader realized when Boba Fett said "As you wish", what he meant was "I love you."
Vader used to say it to the Emperor and Piett said it to Vader. The Empire = love.

There's a lot of things in the movie that make more sense once you've read the book. Humperdinck needed to marry a princess to become King. His family bought a hamlet and declared it a kingdom, offering Buttercup's family an estate and enough money to live out their days comfortably if Buttercup agree to be his Princess Bride. She had given up on Westley, so she figured she might as well go through with it for her family's sake.
After the lockdown last year, a number of actors and fans made home-made remakes of the Princess Bride as a tribute. Of the notable versions was one made by the Director, Rob Reiner, playing the part of the grandfather. And perhaps the best one where Buttercup was played by Joe Jonas and the Man in Black was played by his wife, Sophie Turner (they also cast their corgi as the ROUS). I recommend at least a quick review - it's awesome!
The actress who plays Buttercup is the same actress who’s Wonder Woman’s mother in the 2017 film.

She went from playing one of the most sympathetic characters in this, to playing one of the most dislikable in "Gump".
Andre the Giant was one of my favorite wrestlers as a child. Apparently he could drink 40 pints of beer and still wouldn't be drunk..tipsy, but not drunk. And everyone i've seen talk about him said he was a really cool guy

@@Caseytify The joke is funnier when you consider that as part of the English nobility Robin would have been a Norman and primarily spoken French, as that was the language of the English Court for most of the Middle Ages (Richard I himself never even learned English). And that the English accent we recognize didn't even exist in the 12th Century (ironically, Costner's flat mid-American accent is actually closer to the phonology of Middle English than the modern Received Pronunciation is).

My wife, young daughter, and I saw this when it was released in the late 1980,s. Just a couple of days ago my daughter (now all grown up & married) sent a text that needed a response. I simply replied, As You Wish.
It was a throughly enjoyable experience seeing you watch this for the first time. Thank you for choosing this one.
I lost my grandfather at the end of 2020 and ever since the end of this movie makes me tear up.

One of the best and sweetest movies ever. Yes, Andre the Giant is worth researching the trivia. The movie itself has so many cool behind-the-scenes facts. And the fact that the sword scenes were choreographed by Bob Anderson, the greatest fencing instructor to ever set foot onto a movie set, doesn't hurt.

This has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the late '80's. Thank you for reacting to it and really getting how special it is!
Great movie. This movie is for everyone boys and girls it is such a great movie. This movie is based on a book. The scene with Wesley and the six finger man when the six finger man hit him in the head was real and the actor who plays Wesley had to go to the hospital. There was real spark between the main actors in real life Westley and Buttercup that's why it works. Andre the giant used his big hands to protect Robin Wright (Buttercup ) head when she was cold on the set. You should see other fantasy movies like Wilow, Laberinth and The Never Ending Story.
In case you might be wondering how Inigo recovered from that gut stab - there’s a little detail that’s easy to miss: After Miracle Max creates the miracle pill but before they give it to Westley, Inigo LICKS it out of curiosity.
So he got just enough “charge” from it to survive and recover.
The bishop at the wedding was played by the great comedian Peter Cook. He was for many years in a double act with the equally wonderful Dudley Moore. You should consider watching their 1967 comedy "Bedazzled." (Don't bother with the poor remake.)
Miracle Max was played by Billy Crystal; Valerie, his wife, by the marvelous Carol Kane. Max's comment about a nice MLT was an adlib.
Since you don't like _cheesy_ romantic movies you should absolutely watch the 1987 romantic comedy, "Moonstruck." It is that rare thing: a non-sappy romance. It stars Cher, Nicolas Cage, and a remarkable supporting cast. It was nominated for six Oscars, winning three: Cher for Best Actress, Olympia Dukakis for Best Supporting Actress, and John Patrick Shanley for Best Original Screenplay.
Ladyhawk is another great romance, especially if you're sticking with more of a fantasy/fairytale theme.

I like how Andre the Giant can sometimes be tough, but other times you can't help but love him as Fezzik. Andre was best known at the time for being a professional wrestler.
Wallace Shawn did great with his smart aleck attitude as Vezzini. He's also known for being the voice of Rex in the "Toy Story" franchise. More recently, he's had a recurring role on "Young Sheldon".
Her role as Princess Buttercup was the first big one for Robin Wright. You probably remember her as Jenny in "Forrest Gump". She's also been in the two "Wonder Woman" films in recent years.
This grandson has a good relationship with his grandpa; the kind of relationship _I'd've_ been glad to have with _either_ of my grandpas when they were still alive.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that the character's dialogue. Even when their fighting, it's sometimes very civilized. Like ehat's wrong with two characters who are adversaries but who still treat eachother with the utmost respect during one of the coolest recorded swordfights in Hollywood history? Am i right?
I first saw this film when I was maybe 8 or 9 on vacation with my family in Florida, and it was weird at first, but it was very very funny, witty, and charmingly romantic!
"Keep your shirt on" is a great saying. Other sayings with similar meanings are "hold your horses" and "calm your tits".

I love Duaffy's laugh and her sense of humor it is so adorable
The swordfight in this movie was choreographed by the Great Bob Anderson. Anderson is one of the best swordsmen of the 20th century, and trained some of the greatest swordsmen in Hollywood, including Errol Flynn. He was also the man in the Vader Suit for the fight with Obi-Wan in the original Star Wars, as well as the choreography for Empire and Jedi.
I love how every wound Inigo inflicts on Count Rugen is the same that Rugen inflicted on him: Arm, shoulder, both cheeks, and then the fatal thrust in the stomach.
You are the only reactor that chuckled at “murdered by pirates is good” and so you earned my sub!
This movie is the perfect mix of romance, acrion and comedy, one of the best movies ever made

I can never decide if my all-time favorite movie is The Princess Bride or the Shawshank Redemption. They're both so perfect, but in very different ways. Or maybe just in different genres. I can't say that one is better than the other, but I think they're the best comedy/satire, and the best drama.
You said this is "good for kids", this is the absolute Chessiest of all Chessie movies and it is perfect for everybody for all time! Even YOU loved it and had the same reactions as the Grandson! Now you know why it was so valued by your Patreons.

Rob Reiner the director also did a movie around the same time called Stand by Me a wonderful movie! A incredible coming of age story! One of the stars is a young River Phoenix brother of Joaquin Phoenix! He was on his way to stardom when he died on the streets of Los Angeles of a drug overdose! It was a short story written by Steven King! A movie everyone should see!
Stand By Me is one of the best movies centered on child characters. The Sand Lot and Second Hand Lions are two more.
The actor who played Inigo (the swordsman) had just lost his father to cancer during production. During his final fight with Count Rugen, he channeled his rage and anger into his performance, envisioning Rugen as the emodiment of the disease that took away his father.
Princess Bride has MANY quotable lines, but this will always be my favourite:
"I want my father back, you son of a bitch!"
When Deadpool 2 was re-released in theaters as a pg-13 film, they called it Once Upon a Deadpool. They made the movie more family friendly and added additional scenes. The entire movie is told as a story by Deadpool. Fred Savage is the name of the kid actor in this movie. Deadpool kidnaps a now grown up Fred Savage, ties him in to the same bed and they're in the same set.
15:08 Cary Elwes actually got knocked out for real during this scene.
Several times they tried to get it right. But it didn't look convincing. So Cary suggested that he be hit for real. The shot in the movie is actually him blacking out from the impact. XD

Awww this was so lovely to watch with you! 💕 This is one of my fave movies of all time. It came out on my birthday during my last year of highschool and it was such a big deal. The quotes from this movie are classic and the OST is superb!
They hired one of the classic swordfighting choreographers/teachers to teach the main characters to fence believably, and gave him free reins to help design the swordfights. This is why they're so cool.
Yes, Westley's mask is based on Zorro's. The guy who wrote the novel (and movie), William Goldman wrote it as a tribute/parody to classic adventure novels and movies of his youth - including Zorro - but the novel also has a bunch of bits mocking how many old-time adventure novels also had long, pointless chapters about meaningless details (because the writers were paid by the word).
*Edit:* Also, funnily enough, Goldman made up the countries entirely (Florin and Guilder) and described them as "between Germany and Scandinavia"...which, funnily enough, matches up perfectly with a couple of small places on the southeast coast of Denmark/Northwest coast of Germany who not only were historically enemies, but also have a set of very tall cliffs nearby. Goldman was a bit amused when someone told him a while back (before he died).
When I saw you were watching this movie I got an big smile imagining your reaction. I wasn't disappointed.
I'm amused how annoyed reactors get at Buttercup for not helping in the fire swamp.

Andre the Giant drove a custom ATV to get around. For fun, he asked Cary if he wanted to try driving it a bit. But Cary fractured his toe when the ATV accelerated and he almost fell off. When he got taken to the hospital, the doctor who examined him mistook him as an actor playing Zorro. XD
You can even see in the shots where Wesley and Buttercup are running at 11:42 and beyond in the movie. They filmed it so it didn't focus on his limp that much, but you can still see Cary was running on his broken toe.
The grandpa reading the story is the legendary Peter Faulk. Better known as Lt. Columbo. He played that character for decades. Even roasted Frank Sinatra in character. Columbo is a great show to watch on your own time.
My favorite movie. Always makes me feel better when I watch it. But you're right it's hard to maintain those pure feelings of hope and love and trust with the world always trying to take them away from you.
"Keep your shirt on" was a very common expression when this movie was made.

Probably the first on the list of perfect films. It's just...like *joy* in cinematic form. Here's a story. The shooting days would get cold, and Robin (Buttercup) would get cold, so Andre (Fezzik) would put his hands on her head, but his hands were so big they encompassed her head like a hat and ear muffs and kept her warm. Andre was every bit as kind as Fezzik, ask literally anyone who ever knew him.
“She didn’t notice him!” In the book, Buttercup is not the brightest woman around.
I always find it funny that the grandfather spoils the ending of the book/movie part way through.
Also watch "My Neighbor Totoro." That's another movie that moved me deeply for its sheer benevolence and positivity. It's also a movie that does so without feeling the need to throw in archetypal heroes and villains and having its characters in constant peril. It is its own unique thing and it's beautiful for it.
