  • Award-winning author James McBride has built a career exploring American culture and identity through storytelling--starting in 1996 with his memoir "The Color of Water," detailing his life as a biracial child growing up in Brooklyn. In 2015, he received the National Humanities medal from President Obama for his lifelong work "humanizing the complexities of discussing race." His latest book "Deacon King Kong" looks at how communities pull together in the face of violence and trauma. He joins Michel Martin to discuss the work.

James McBride creates moments in his writing that both shock and awe us. His ability to take the misused and broken parts of society, and then to cleverly find various angles so that all, no matter their background, can appreciate his message. My first experience was with his Color of Water. His tribute to his mother and to his youth is astounding. I immediately put this auto/biography on my high school students book list. Now, with his Deacon King Kong, I bought all of my classes this novel out of my own pocket. His amazing ability to create realistic characters who are flawed but heroic allows us to sit back and enjoy the ride since we all can appreciate these same ideas within ourselves. He never deviates from delivering a message of hope and love. Thanks for posting the interview, this made my day.

Love James's story. Housing projects in the fifties and sixties were villages. Ethnically we all got along.

In the middle of the novel I bumped into a William Faulkner Easter egg. Of a sudden there is a two or three page single sentence in Faulkner's voice. What a lovely and wonderful surprise. The book is charming, funny, and significant. I recommend it to everyone I know. (Not for the Easter egg --- that was just a bonus) Thank you, James McBride.

That passage is why this book is so wonderfully hilarious and ultimately satisfying. Cant help but like the protagonist Sport after that window into his life and character.
