Good discussion. I was recently on vacation in the Caribbean, and the safe swimming area of the beach of the hotel at which I was staying was walled off. There was a gap in the wall, but the water beyond the wall was obviously risky. I couldn't resist swimming outside the wall, and I found myself dragged out to sea by the current. I was terrified, and struggled to swim back to the wall, which was made of coral. I stood on the wall to escape the strong current, but cut my feet on the coral. It was better than drowning. I then reenteered the safe area. I later thought a lot about why I wanted to swim outside the wall. Thanks for the explanation.

Funny, just last night, I looking for this line where you talk about Dostoyevsky's utopian society (which is in the beginning of this video you just posted). It was to be used in a rebuttal to the usual argument by the AI fans that everyone will be creative and happy when robots are doing all the work. These types have watched too much science fiction and Star Trek. They assume everyone will want to do something morally and spiritually productive within society. Like make art and maintain a nice garden. They conveniently forget about the subset of people that will only find pleasure in destroying things.
Then that leads to the next problem -- what do you do with those people that want to tear it all down? What is their punishment? Who decides it? And who decides what is "good for society." Are there certain types or themes of art that won't be allowed? And how do you enforce it?
Maybe I've watched too much Star Trek. I'm reminded of the TNG episode titled "Justice". It's the one where Wesley made the mistake of trampling a garden on accident, and faced a rather harsh punishment for it.
Sounds to me like a "AI utopia" is a one-way ticket to a totalitarian and authoritarian rule. A rule by who? Or what?

    • @JohnDeanMusic
      @JohnDeanMusic 2 месяца назад

does it really matter what kind of foundation we have at the root of society when we will still have malevolent folks who want to cause issues within it, regardless of the parameters their lives are set in? I mean, we will still have judges and lawmakers to help punish them, unless you are implying that AI takes over as judge jury and executioner which I'd highly doubt. Maybe AI centralizing the government and maybe even the world, will allow for smaller communities to arise and form giving more meaning to individual life, rather than this current oversized mess of an economy that governs and produces seemingly meaningless individuality of most people who merely work to live and live to work without actually living at all because they have to survive in order to enjoy the small niceties they can manage that ultimately pale in comparison to actually living. Idk, but even so if AI takes over and we do get an economy of folk who can do as they please, I'd imagine we'd still have a system in place for criminals and those whose constitution is to undermine the very fabric society as it stands.

TNG is the flagship of the federation. We are seeing the best there is at work.
If you want a more "realistic take" DS9 is recommended. Here there are conflicts, even between humans.
AI in Star Trek helps people do their work, like replicators for food and of course Data who is unique.
In TNG and DS9 they showed a real gardener and a cook on earth though. So AI doesn´t necessarily do the work for them.

I would add that we don’t really know what is going to make us happy. How can we know if our future selves will enjoy what we thought we wanted? I once acquired a flower shop thinking it would be like living in one of Debbie Macomber’s novels. It was not a storybook experience and the experience of working super hard and still being broke was very disillusioning. So now I don’t trust my emotions and assumptions. But finding that sweet spot between risk taking and safety is really difficult. Happiness is elusive. Don’t take enough chances and bitterness will result. Play life fast and loose; regret dumb ass mistakes.

Perhaps I'm simply saying what you're saying in a different way, but I'm not sure I agree. I would say that they are forces that - in an integrated proactive person - oppose each other fruitfully in an ebbing and flowing tension, and do so always with a danger to them.
Comfort has an increasing effect of sedentary gravity. The more you pursue it, the harder it is to leave it behind, and the more you lose sight of life and light outside of it. A drive and a force and a drug that quickly becomes a god, if it is not resisted and restrained, even while it offers less and less satisfaction and pleasure. The drug feels beautiful at the beginning, is quickly adapted to, and never reaches that peak again, because like a warm shower after a hard rainy day run, it is designed to follow on the far side of costly effort. When that accomplishment is absent, the lazy and lethargic seek ever more lavish forms and extremes of comfort, and yet remain as miserable as they are useless. The same devouring potential lies within us all, and we deny that truth to our peril.
Adventure drives us to accomplishment, to conquering, to chancing, to throwing off, and to risking. It despises predictability, comfort, stillness, and perhaps even structure - treating discomfort as an invitation and a mark of pride. Did it rain and wash out the trail? Good. Is that trail straight up the mountain side? Good. "Embrace the suck" we so often hear, for difficult stories and the devolution of plans into craziness we never saw coming makes for far better stories than plans successfully carried out without a hitch. It also, however, is never satisfied. It is hunger; it is motion. It can be satiated for a moment, but even then it digests what has come and begins to make room for more. Adventure without the restraint of purpose become a dysfunction and an inability to build and maintain and invest. Those consumed by it are without both rest and without legacy - remembered for feats, but with nothing produced to last longer than they do - save, perhaps, an exciting story.
Comfort is a driving desire for many hard workers - the reason retirement was so desirable in a previous generation, and financial stability and a "life of leisure" the more current form. Both are understandable,. And both are genuinely dangerous. Adventure, the admirable drive in a world (especially in the masculine heart) deeply hungry for significance and accomplishment and the appearance of strength and admiration of others. If I do, I am enough.
Both are not evil desires. Both must be restrained by purpose. Both have their place in restrained measure in the fruitful life. And both are destructive if unfocused and without direction. "Without vision, the people go unrestrained. Without vision, the people perish."

Is it worth considering that some, maybe few, suicides are less about escaping dire straits and more about making a very complicated choice & commitment? It takes commitment for certain and some internal compromising, but feeling “intoxicated enough” to be (feel) in a good enough position to retire: no regrets no worries, selfish maybe, but convinced with ease the future isn’t looking so easy. Maybe a lazy way out, as defined and judged by a society of “pheasants” themselves , or maybe one feels the chaos of life to be greater than self generated willingness to mature within life’s natural nature of suffering until death is the whammy like a thief in the night stealing everything that was human which you spent your whole life living like because that’s what they wrote in the rule book and called it a bible and pretended to be nature l
Death is the natural occurrence of life exhaustion emotionally and physically- the grand finale - knowing either way it all dust to dust ashes to ashes
Maybe suffering just isn’t worth it, especially just because some other experimental human life arrogantly deemed it to be and so it must be the failure of will and hard work.
