I quite like the asymmetric shape from the window. I have a couple of unpruned Jade plants of a similar age. Will have to take a closer look at their potential.
Or I could watch your video 3 more times (as I did) and just boldly cut (as I did with my heart in my throat)! My had now looks beautiful! Thanks for your video guidance!
It depends on light levels, feed, pot size, watering and temperature. However with ideal growing conditions it's possible to get to this size in four years.
This year I lost my more than thirty years old Jade Plant...my fault, I didn´t looked at it enough during winter (during summer it was always outside)...I´m really sad!
I just transplanted my jade into a 14" deep garden pot because it was so big. (All my life houseplants have over-performed for me.Always grows healthy and huge.) Now I learn about cutting. Mine needs some time to adjust to the new soil and pot before I traumatize it with a first prune I would imagine. Now I see how many branches and leaves can be trimmed to result in a stunning tree, the trunk is the size of a pop bottle. Southern exposure does it nicely. Thanks for the edderkayshun.
Yours must look quite magnificent with a trunk as thick as a pop bottle. Yes I would wait until its roots have filled the new pot before pruning it as otherwise the pot will have damp areas where the roots have not yet filled, and as they need less watering after they have had a prune it will be easier to cause root rot. They are pretty tough plants and respond well to pruning, mine has already produced lots of new shoots since this video.
May i ask where you find your material for your channel Barbara ? If i was to seen your channel without seeing you comment anything i would be thinking i was sure you represented some sort of spam bot channel... Also,, upload a video of u'r jade please ? =)
You gave it a nice look. It looked quite full before the pruning. It was nice that way too, but looks better after the pruning. You got many Jade "material" to propagate it.
I was very unsure as to prune it or not, as I did like the way it looked before, which is why I waited 4 years to prune it. But I think it will be fun to try and turn it into a bonsai.
I have one that is 6 years old. It has a healthy trunk but the leaves have become smaller. Are you going to root prune yours at some point? I had considered doing a raducsl cut in top and root prune toi. Thoughts on this?
I also have a 4 year old jade that has just exploded in size over the last months. It has a good thick main stem with 2 sturdy side stems as yours does, but I'm at a loss as to where I should begin cutting it to give it a better shape and to highlight the stems. Is it possible to send a few pictures of my plant for your advice?
Cut above the brown ring, the brown ring is where new growth will appear from. Pruning the top growth off will encourage side branches to form from lower down on the trunk.
I prefer jade plants to have leaves that are more bulbous than flat, with noticeable edges. Is this determined primarily by how much the plant is watered? I am always concerned about overwatering it.
I think its to do with the variety, but also feeding and watering. Some varieties of Jade plant naturally have more plump leaves, but all my plants are from the same mother as cuttings so the large differences in leaf shape is due to feeding and watering. I find if the plants are well fed and watered they produce very large flat light green shiny leaves. But if they are not fed and watered very seldom they produce much smaller but fatter leaves and the leaves are much darker not shiny, sometimes even a little purple in colour. But the plants which are not fed and seldom watered grow extremely slowly. You can see in my money plant collection video the differences in size and shape despite all being the same age. This is due to feed and watering differences.
Nice Video, I was wondering, How quickly do these plants grow? For example, the nice big stem you trimmed off, how long do you think it will take for it to reach the size of your the plant in your video. Thanks!
wow what a difference! i had no idea it would still have a soft trunk after 4 years! how long do you think you will wait before you trim the lower branches? thank you for showing this.👍
What caused it to branch out if you've never pruned it prior to this? All my cuttings just grow straight up (currently about 8 inches) until the point they start to lean to one side... Any suggestions? I want to cut it near to the base to encourage a look like yours, but don't want to cut off too much
Are you doing the second pruning anytime soon? Also, I got a jade plant 1 month back and I also intend to transform it into a bonsai someday. All tips will be helpful.
I'm currently letting it grow un pruned, it will probably be a while until I do any further pruning. If you want your Jade plant to grow a thick trunk make sure you give it plenty of sunshine and feed it well, it will also drink a lot in a sunny location but allow the compost to dry out between waterings. For a thick short trunk its best to let the plant grow a lot un pruned and then give it a very hard prune to reduce its height and encourage further branching.
Make sure it gets as much sunshine as possible and also feed it with a feed high in Nitrogen over summer. Also make sure you water it well every time it dries out, but you must make sure it dries out fully before watering it again.
Feed it with a fertiliser high in nitrogen and make sure its getting plenty of bright light, if you are in a hot country avoid midday sun as this encourages smaller leaves. It could also have small leaves if its a small leaved variety or if it's actually portulacaria afra and not a jade plant.
Hi! Ive just started growing my own jade plants.. i was wondering if you had an email where i can ask you some questions on the jade plant.. growing, plant pot size etc.. thankyou
Hi, my name is Imre. I have been growing Jade plants for about 50 years. Some of my plants are 8ft tall.I have a collection of many many jade plants. If you have questions email me at imre_varga@yahoo.com.
I give it a high nitrogen liquid feed over summer time, then I use a tomato feed in autumn to encourage flowering. The high nitrogen feed makes it grow very quickly and produce large leaves.
I think I have a mad .. I can’t tell.. it looks simile but it doesn’t how a brown stem and isn’t as shiny. Been trying to find out the name forever lol
Make sure its well fed with a feed high in nitrogen over the summer months and water it well whenever the soil dries out, but make sure the compost dries before watering again.
It varies, it could be because of the cultivar, but also a lot is to do with how its been grown. If its a healthy plant with plenty of light and feed it will be a darker colour. If its stressed it often has yellow leaves with red tips, especially if its under fed, under watered and has too much strong sunshine.
Gardening at 58 North I can attest. I stress mine often and the leaves are usually yellowish. Once it becomes happy it again, it'll go back to dark green.
No, I potted it up into that pot about a year ago. Its been in several pots, each one bigger than the last, but its going to stay in its current pot from now on to limit its size.
Most likely light level if not a different variety of plant, higher light levels tend to produce lighter leaves or red colour and low light levels give darker leaves
I quite like the asymmetric shape from the window. I have a couple of unpruned Jade plants of a similar age. Will have to take a closer look at their potential.
That jade is looking very healthy and pretty. Well done!
Or I could watch your video 3 more times (as I did) and just boldly cut (as I did with my heart in my throat)! My had now looks beautiful! Thanks for your video guidance!
I got a nice little jade plant, about 7 - 8 cm. How long will it take to be as big as the tree in the video? Approximatily?
It depends on light levels, feed, pot size, watering and temperature. However with ideal growing conditions it's possible to get to this size in four years.
Mantap caranya memangkas batang bonsai nya,,
Terus semangat kawan ❤️❤️
stunning
Very Nice!!!

Thanks for the information, I have four of them myself, love jades
WOW VERY NICE TREE

My jade is about 4 years old as well however trunk is not a thick as yours. Is there any tips how to make the trunk thicker and healthier?
When pruning a large branch (~1.5 cm) can I expect more growth from the stump or will that just callus over?
Love the jade. I got mine a year ago, it was losing leavescuz the soil was to wet so I re potted it
beautiful plant you are lucky
You gave it a nice look. It looked quite full before the pruning. It was nice that way too, but looks better after the pruning. You got many Jade "material" to propagate it.

To me the pot looks to small. Beautiful, but looks top heavy. I would be afraid of it toppling over.
I liked your video. I have a few Jade plant cuttings growing. It will be interesting
to see how your Bonsai looks in a few years time.
how on earth do you get it to grow that big in that small of a pot
Regular feeding and a yearly root pruning with new compost added. Also its on a very sunny windowsill.
Ahh! I want one of these cuttings😂

Soooooo beautiful
If I want to stimulate more wide growth, do I cut right above the brown ring? At the brown ring? Thanks.
Cut above the brown ring, the brown ring is where new growth will appear from. Pruning the top growth off will encourage side branches to form from lower down on the trunk.

how is that thing so big? I've had a jade plant for half the time and it's only like 7 inches tall

My jade plant have very tiny leaves.what to do for bigger the size of leaves.??

Thanks for nice information.I am from a hot country .I will follw your instructions. 😊

How do you feed/fertilize this plant

Gardening at 58 North what the name of the brand?
Thanks for sharing these great tips. I had no idea money plants flower!
I think I have a mad .. I can’t tell.. it looks simile but it doesn’t how a brown stem and isn’t as shiny. Been trying to find out the name forever lol
can a jade plant be left outside for winter in the UK
My research says no as it’s too cold. Only in summer months should it be outside
Hello for me its not green as your's. How can I get it this green pls thx
Make sure its well fed with a feed high in nitrogen over the summer months and water it well whenever the soil dries out, but make sure the compost dries before watering again.
Why are some jade plants darker greener than others?
It varies, it could be because of the cultivar, but also a lot is to do with how its been grown. If its a healthy plant with plenty of light and feed it will be a darker colour. has it always been in that bonsai pot? for the four years
No, I potted it up into that pot about a year ago. Its been in several pots, each one bigger than the last, but its going to stay in its current pot from now on to limit its size.
That jade is beautiful! My jade plant has lighter green leaves do you know why they are not darker like yours?

Oh ok! Thank you so much for the help!
