I wanted to try replaying the original Homeworld, but I gave up trying to get it to run on my computer. As I remember there were a bunch of questionable units in the original homeworld. Scouts, Defenders, Drone Frigates, Assault Frigates, Heavy Cruisers, all corvettes. I found the game worked best with missile destroyers, ion cannon frigates, interceptors and bombers. Anything had problems with DPS or were too easily destroyed by larger ships.
Battlecruisers had a similar problem in HW2, their forward firing arc for their top/bottom ion cannons was extremely narrow and often only one would fire.
That's one reason I really liked HW:Cataclysm, in that game all the units at least seemed viable. (although the multibeam frigates would spaz out sometimes)
