These are very similar in a way to those used during the French and Indian War by Rogers Rangers and Robert Rogers as they would trek up and down northern New York and on the ice of the lakes in 1757, 1758. There are a couple of original examples in museums up here and although they're mounted a little differently, the rest is very similar to yours. Excellent work.

Pro tip if you are making something out of leather which is supposed to endure a lot of friction use the rougher side, it will last longer.
