Music stores are quickly going out of business, along with other localized businesses due to the rise of the warehouse supercenter. What does going to a local or music-centered store offer you as compared to these super-suckfests? Well, to start, a little individual attention...

I'm 17 years old and whenever I want to have a record, I go ahead and fucking buy it. I just want to support my favorite artists for what they are, for what their music is doing for me and for the hard work of writing and recording the songs. Downloading it on some illegal websites is nothing but stealing the music from the artists.
In addition to that, I love to have a CD in my hands and read the lyrics while listening to the whole thing, it's something special, something that got lost nowadays and it's pretty sad.

I still purchase music physically, many kids at my school are like "You still buy CDs/records?!" and I tell them yes. With the physical album, you get the album, artwork, lyrics and all that good stuff. Sadly, many record stores are closing left and right, I'm lucky I live in a large city, so there are music stores near me. I never shop at Wal-Mart for anything, let alone music. Besides, their music selection is terrible and the albums are usually censored. I will admit that I do download from time to time and that's because some of the albums I want are hard to find physically and they can be very expensive. As of today, I have over 100 physical albums, both CD and vinyl and that will continue to grow.

Thank you CKN. Because of you, I started buying my music in physical form. Yes, I still download music an album once in a while if it's hard to find/expensive, but many times (especially when I go trolling through record stores or thrift stores), I'll find the disc at an insanely lower price. If I have children someday, I want to be able to show them all the music that had in impact on my life; maybe even pass it down to them. Also, the audio quality on a CD is still better than digital formats to this day!

I go to my local record store every week to buy records. Really cool people, music playing through out the store, conversations about music being had buy customers as well as employees. Ive purchased LPs, 7 inches / 45's in Rock, Metal, Rap / Hip Hop, Experimental, Electronic, Punk/ Hardcore, Indie / Indie Pop, Shoegaze, Emo, Noise etc. I love going to my local shop ! I also check online if there are any other record stores near me while I'm out in a different location, I visit many of these different record stores because you never know what records you can potentially come home with. I strongly believe that purchasing music / owning a physical copy of an album will never get old to people like me. We have record stores that have yet to be visited, music to be explored, Record Store Day to look forward to every year, and the 1st annual Wax Festival happen this past weekend over here in Hollywood California ! But, recently a clothing store called "Forever 21" took FYE's place in that mall. I will always support and buy physical copies, I prefer being able to hold and look at the music with my own hands and eyes as well as be able to appreciate the full set of artwork on an album in the booklet and all over (album artwork is vital in my opinion) also it's known that music on a cd is of a higher quality than downloads, so why settle for less with a purchase off iTunes or whatever. There's something so very satisfying about opening a brand new cd case to see the inside, take out the disc and put it in a player than just click a button to play music you don't physically own yourself

I think the only reasons why I purchase physical CDs is not because I want to help support a band. It's mainly because I tend to find songs more naturally done on CD while iTunes just edits the songs making them sound very weak and choppy at times, that might be just me though. Also I love collecting CDs of bands I love, especially the ones in which their entire albums are fucking enjoyable.

The music industry has robbed artists and underpromoted great bands and artists, the '80's and '90's were full of of those cases. Artists and bands have had to sue their labels for money unpaid or to get out of bad deals. I miss record stores they are disappearing.

I use to have a collection; thousands of CDs, hundreds of records, and a good number of cassettes. Then my storage unit got auctioned off and I lost everything including some rare albums such as the Beatles butcher album. It was hard to start over and with being in the navy, a digital collection was just convenient.
As much as I love the tangibility of records, I've settled with a digital collection for the sake of convenience and space. Mark,I worked at Walmart for a couple of weeks years ago...
I once noticed that the costumers started to stay away from the local Walmart ( there was a lack of shoppers) .. this is the reason people started to avoid the store .... Walmart still imports their clothing items from Fucking China !.. as for the Cd/DVD selection it's terrible ! When there was a record store In my hometown... I always used to talk with the employees.. the only reason for the only record store that was ..well ,maybe a mile &1/2 away from where I lived ... went nto bankruptcy.. was that the recording industry jacking the price on Cd up so high that noone could buy it !.. The worst example of this shameful practice was I went to coconuts records... and automatically walked into the double cd packages aisle... Looked at a a rolling stones cd ( it was hot rocks,,i had to replace it for some reason) But,when I saw the sticker on the cd package.. ( the price was $39.99... plus tax which would've been close to $45.00 ) I put it back into the display & walked out of the store..!

I live in a metropolitan city, but the corporate disease has already destroyed and taken a hold of pretty much all of the decent and meaningful music centers that used to exist here. This means that I now have to travel a distance to visit the next closest music shop and it is counter-productive in both money and time-wise terms. I refuse to shop in the last entertainment chain near me as they are better, but are by no means a decent substitute for the independents.

so if that's the case i go online shopping i go to amazon or ebay FYE etc. for my cd shopping when i buy a cd on amazon or ebay i prepared to shell more money to pay for knowing that that certain cd is no longer being made the condition that said cd has to be in for me to buy it brand new or like new
the one problem i have with Wal-Mart selling cd's is (if it's Hip Hop/Rap) they only sell the clean versions not the explict version of the cd i found that out in 1997 when i bought a Too $hort cd i knew the difference the two versions i dont buy music from walmart for that exact reason......

The equivalent of downloading 2-3 decades ago was taping off of the radio. But there was a difference. We actually desired and wanted to get the physical legal cd, single, or record. Today many don't know what it means to buy music. Yes it is tasteless and it's theft that hurts artists.
I was just talking today about the failure of Tower records. I think they failed because they redirected customers for used music that was just out of print. Yes, the may be able to find it used at a specialty store but Tower redirected customers to another record stores. At various points, they didn't sell 33's or 45's and some stuff you couldn't get on cd at various points.
My style of music died back in 1993 when clear channel bought every media outlet up. They thought that hip hop soul was the only thing that would sell in mass. Back in the 70-early 90's soul artists would try different styles. I remember Natalie Cole and the Pointer Sisters dabbling in country or Chaka Khan including a few jazz cuts on her full-lengths. You mentioned TLC. They couldn't sing yet were the Lady GaGa's of the day. TLC created songs in one style. Instead of every artist taking a shot at a style which was done in prior attempts in the genres of disco and New Jack swing, older artists were not signed. Older artists or those who catered to the soul market were ignored practically overnight. In 1992, several artists had released albums with swingbeat, house, adult contemporary, ballads, and hip hop soul all on the same set. Styles did change; sales in 1992 were poor considering we were in a recession after the first Gulf War and labels were still asking $16 for a disc. Uptempos were done; ballads were gone; and all we had was hip hop related garbage.

An vital part of hard copies is their packaging. To me, packaging contributes greatly to a sense of "album-ness" with recorded music. I value this aspect a great deal, and it seems that with hard-drive culture, "album-ness" is dying out. That means we're reverting to the 1950s, when songs ruled. And while I don't buy albums ONLY for the packaging, I still continue to spend money on CDs, CD box sets and vinyl that have extensive quality packaging and sundry extras (many of which aren't online).

I buy from Walmart and such because it's close by. Nearest record store is 50 miles away. It's a great feeling when I walk in there. When ever I'm down in the area I always swing by. Just wish it was closer because selections at Walmart and such are crap.

i guess im pretty lucky, the record store i go to has a great selection of records/cds the metal section is the biggest in the store, youll find anything from popular bands such as maiden to the relatively obscure such as witchfinder general if you ask, theyll order in a cd for you to pick up, i knew that it was bad, but after seeing some comments, i feel really lucky that i do have that connection and friendship with the employees, whom have great knowledge.

I ony download albums that are not available or out of print, or when there's only one or two songs on it that I like.
But albums I really like or that are genre defining classics I always (try) to buy. Especially when there's cool bonus stuff and extra artwork.

Since 2009, people have been complaining about their Itune songs just vanishing and this could be gigs worth of songs. Sometimes they end up having to buy the songs again. CDs are far more convenient with me since I don't have a smart phone or portable mp3 player. I also have had issues where CDs have melted (left in a hot car for example) or broke. If those things constantly happened, then I would have switched over.

Here in the UK, where I live, the music store scene is pretty sad. We used to have Virgin Megastores, MVC and Zavvi along with HMV, but now it's just them. I tend to go with Amazon and Play.com a lot of the time because HMV's prices can be astronomical, but, if I can find it there, there is still the excitement of picking up the occasional album on release day from them. Also their metal section seems to be getting smaller and smaller. One day it feels like it's going to disappear completely.

I agree completely. The way artists need to make money is on good performances. I'll shell out 60+ dollars on a concert or show any day, and I'll go out and see the same bands many times over as well. Meeting of the minds can happen on the internet...its called research. Its all about convenience. I like physical copies, and if I really wanted to shell out the hard earned cash on those copies, I can probably order it on the net (Amazon) and I can listen to it first on RUclips. lol.

Whenever I can, I go out and buy my music. The problem is, FYE has been stocking less and less over the years and now their selection is getting pretty sorry. Now, they just want to burn you a copy when they don't have it. I also have local indie record store, they have a tendency to carry random stuff, but their trade-ins have shrunk too and the guys there are not even approachable. Many times I have no choice but to order online. I cannot stand a mp3 download, the quality is usually crap! And listening to a crap file through computer speakers or a tiny phone speaker? What's the point?
I actually did have a decent conversation with a guy at Walmart about album they were selling, turns out he played guitar, was into 90s rock and grunge, etc.

There aren't any music stores around me that sell new music. However, there are a few places that sell used music at half price along with used movies and books. I can sometimes get 9 c.d.s for $40.00 while at a place like Best Buy [who I buy from at times] I can only get like 4 c.d.s for that same price.

I will admit that I do pirate a lot of albums, but I make sure not to pirate anything 2010-now so I'm not cheating the artists out of too much money, being a musician myself. I plan to buy all the albums I pirate on vynal or cd some time in the future when I earn enough money to do so. I'm already in the process of buying back all the Porcupine Tree albums.

Also (side note), what I said about buying all the albums I've pirated may seem like an empty promise, but I have already bought many of them and I am getting even more for Christmas. By the end of this week, I will have hard copies of over half of the Porcupine Tree albums

I have less problem with Walmart than with illegal downloading. Walmart still has to buy the CD"s so record companies or artists still make profits. The problem is that whatever store you buy music from (whether it be FYE or Walmart) is competing with free or a Spotify, which for all intents and purposes pay artists nothing at all.
It's just shifting the money from the artists to the internet company.

What if I like metal but I live in a country that imports absolutely not a single CD. What if Amazon doesn't ship them here and even if it would, I still wouldn't have the experience of going into a store. I never was at a metal concert and don't own a single metal CD. What if youtube and spotify are the single music stores I hace acces to?

My FYE has been closed for nearly 2 years now and I hate it so much. Best Buy has declined so much since I first starting shopping there 6 years ago, from the customer service to just having a certain album in stock. Yeah FYE might've been higher, but at least they had the freakin album! Now I have to rely on Amazon(which is kinda turning into the internet Walmart IMO) or just going through the bands' label which I see is the best option now. But there's nothing quite like the experience.

  • @themetalgod66683

The reason why is because the file is compressed. The file needed to be smaller back in the days of 56K so it wouldn't take you 3 days to download one song. If you want to hear the true sound you need to hear it on vinyl. Don't get wrong I own tons of cds but vinyls sound is so great.

Living in third world country sucks! We don't have here any record stores with "foreign" music. maybe few who pirate and making cd's to look like original pressings. It's expensive to buy records from internet because of high shippings. I use spotify which I had to download and sign up with VPN, because it's unavailable here. So, spotify and download...

I like owning physical copies of music quite a lot. Owning digital versions feels...empty. But in some cases I have bought digital because it's easier for me to do so than physical albums of bands' albums that are difficult to buy in my area. Thankfully one does not need a credit card to buy stuff on iTunes, I will probably never own a credit card.

I will only buy physical copies of music. I love the sleeve notes in albums, especially the sleeve notes in Revolver and Abbey Road by the Beatles. If anyone says that CD's are dead are wrong because many musicians still bring out there music on both Vinyl and CD. People who download have no appreciation for music.
