  • In this Video Matt restores 5 vintage chasing hammers. These hammers are used for chasing and repousse as well as hand engraving. Some of these hammers are from Germany and others from America and Italy. This was a fun tool restoration and we hope to do more if you all enjoy this!

      Tragic incident.
      He made blades for a pasta maker.
      Made the pasta. Ate it. Began choking. They began the Heimlich. The pasta began to come up... but the spaghetti was just so loooong that by the time the other end was clear, he had been gone for several minutes.

      I personally found the audio a little quiet, on maximum volume it was still a tad quiet for comfort without headphones

      @@Smona well, I was watching with headphones, but it was a bit quiet. The mixing and relative volume of the things was much better though, which to me is more important (and harder to do imo)

    There are 2 types of videos I'd really love to see from you both if you're able-
    1) Engraving 101 by Ilya- the different types of engraving chisels, how to use those types effectively, how to make your own, how to discern good from bad when buying them, etc. I'm having a hard time finding chisels actually intended for engraving steel online.
    2) Grinding 101 with Matt- how to achieve nice straight lines on the grinding wheel by hand, the different types of abrasives and what they're good for, and just general technique. People on MAA always said you're the grindmaster, I need a masterclass

    you gotta try boiling rusty tools to dislodge the red rust and keep the black oxide to have a better oil adhesion layer.

      @@ThatWorks boiling rusted iron in water converts the red rust (iron3 oxide) in direct contact with the iron into black oxide(iron2 oxide) and soften up the rust that's not in direct contact allowing for easier removal. this is part of the process used in bluing older firearms.
      Mark Novak uses it as a standard treatment when restoring old firearms to keep the original bluing that hasn't been damaged intact.
      i have used this method myself when cleaning up old tools and while not fast it does give nice blued finishes.

    That Italian hammer's handle sort of looks like a wand. Lots of character. Too bad it cracked.
    Still, you did a fantastic restoration job on these hammers.

    Using wood glue or epoxy inside the cut where the wedge goes is what I do most of the time just for peace of mind.

      A lot of people collect these and other unique hammers. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I like my stuff to go to people that will use it.

    What are these hammers used for? I'm looking at the back side and wondering what they are normally used for.

      These are basicly jewelers hammers, the flat side is used for planishing and the ball peen for texturising or for dishing out sheet metal for bowls etc.

    If you have aluminum oxide on your buffing pad and polish your handle it makes them look worn and used. So it’s a good one if you want an “antique” look.

    As far as hammer videos are concerned, if you are making the hammers anyway, why not film it. If nothing else, it's a good option for having something to publish in-between projects.

    I always appreciate watching a restoration video!
    The backwards handle maybe was because the peen was the side that got more use? And the head was upside down so it could get into a tight space?
    Or whoever did it was just wrong/not paying attention!
    Oh, and about handles - a little wood glue on the wedge before it goes in makes it slide in very nicely! I've also heard people said the handle should go in dry, so the oil swells the wood and makes the tightest possible fit. I think it depends on the size of the handle, really!

    Why are the handles so thin? It seems like they would be fairly fragile.

      You would think so but I've never had one break during use. I think the flex gives them a springy effect and reduces as much weight as possible

    I wouldn’t call them super rare, I See them quite often
    I think I would have saved that handle, glued the wood and then whipped it with cord.
    I have forged them out of rail road spikes

      Two of them are quite rare. The other three have become pretty rare as wel because the market is flooded with modern crap.

    Noob question: would a small steel shaft down the middle help with strengthening the neck of the hammer? would need a slow rpm drill with a really small bit but might add some longevity.
