  • Forging Ronin's "Collapsible" Sword out of Titanium. Thanks to Scopely for sponsoring - Download MARVEL Strike Force on iOS & Android and battle in the MARVEL universe here: pixly.go2cloud.org/SH31K . Avengers Infinity War, Avengers End Game and the Disney plus show Hawkeye all feature Ronin's sword with Jeremy Renner wielding it. We forge the blade from titanium and hot punch the slots. The titanium blade is then filed and ground on a 2 x 72" sander. We also forge the aluminum tsuba or guard. The handle is made from Aluminum on a CNC milling machine and then cleaned up by hand. All of the aluminum parts of anodized. So we show how to forge titanium, how to forge aluminum and how to anodize aluminum. Hell even Deadpool and Wolverine and Kate Bishop show up to assist Hawkeye AKA Clint Barton Aka Jeremy Renner on this Marvel adventure.

    (possibly spoilers)
    if i remember right, even in the hawkeye series you first see the sword in a scabbard. and if i also remember, the retraction works not only in lenght, but also width, so it actually can go inside the handle. but having it as a properly made solid piece definitly is better!
    i think they did the retraction thing in the series so the guy who took it home first could do so more easily.

      Make sure you know exactly the grade of titanium you have as each can have very different properties. It’s not a great idea to forge titanium since titanium dioxide is absorbed deep into the metal and weakens it. Would be a cool piece just to have but extremely unpractical.

    OK, first comment from me. I love the very first showing of titanium, where it is visually explained why no-one actually makes swords or knives out of titanium. F-ing brilliant. Also, someone was incredibly concerned about mass to make cut outs in a titanium blade. It's much bulkier than a sword should be, but I'd wager it's still lighter.
    Background on Aluminium Oxide, aka Aluminum Oxide. It IS very hard and durable. Anyone with Al frame windows can probably attest though, that a thin coloured coating is no where near indestructable. Much more resilient than plain Al though. But, doped version (aka Al Oxide with impurities of various types) have common names as crystals, like ruby, emerald etc.
    Now, the real challenge is "forging" Tungsten. :)

I do believe something like exchangeable blades is better. I actually head an ancient martial arts organization and there were ideas like these going bach to turn of 19tg century in Asia and Europe. Pirates may have mastered special weapons. Design and it's funny that my org has connections to both European and Asian piracy going back. Most pirates and Viking type people began as fisherman and farmers forced to pay superior warlords demanding tribute. Survival shaped them into something stronger by necessity.

    You guys have been massively inspiring to me! I'm 31 and seriously considering changing careers from barber to blacksmith. There is a very high regarded college and course in my area and I'm thinking about enrolling, cutting hair in my downtime to keep myself financially secure and eventually transitioning to full time blacksmith when my skills are where they need to be and the work starts coming my way!
    Do you guys think I should do it?

    Ah... did the sword break? During the testing phase, when Matt gets the sword the second time, starting at 27:25 to about 27:30. He swings at some water bottles, and it looks like you can see the blade if you pause it before the strike. But in the follow-through, it looks like there is no blade. In fact, it looks like the tsuba is gone too. Like the tang snapped in the hilt and everything above his hands went flying.

    Great work! Quick question, did you have to heat treat the titanium blade in the same way you would for a steal blade? Or does titanium not need heat treating?

    • @DopetheWind
      @DopetheWind 2 года назад +24

      Titanium is often "aged". Sort of similar to quenching steel, titanium is heat soaked in a furnace for a precisely determined amount of time (referred to as "in solution"), then quenched in a prescribed fluid. Immediately after quench, the part is "aged" by maintaining temperature for extended periods of time (2-24hrs) at a lower, but still very high temperature, then left to cool as slow as possible. Also unlike steel, the times, and temps of each process varies drastically based on alloy.

    Cool that you guys are getting some big name builds with the budget, really cool to do a Ti build. Nice fantasy build, but I don't think anyone would make a sword or knife from Ti except for sentimental reasons, far as I understand it it's much more brittle than steel, so it would most likely shattered in the first, proper sword fight - was expecting you guys to comment on/to this at the end. Would have been curious to see Ilya try it with the rolled up matts :-D

    The best work on titanium I've seen consisted with a higher tech mod of lost wax method and an acid dip that was some kind of enzyme process. More complicated than just acid for refining details. It replaced using any hand tools altogether. Looked finished but then there was some kind of coating like an electroplating technique using powders... I'm not quite sure. It seemed like alien technology to me. Beautiful work. Can't find now but if I ever do I will add.
