Don't quote me on this, but when i was first learning how to weld, the spring on the slag chipping hammer is a light way of building the surface area of the handle up to help hold it with welding gloves on.

Most framing hammers are also 16" long so you can use them to measure between studs
To paraphrase larry haun a man's hammer is 24inches but if the union rep sees you getting too much work done he'll come shorten your handle for ya.
It’s 14.5 inches between studs. 🤷🏽♂️

Roofers hammer with the hatchet! Had a buddy fillet his thumb with the waffle end of that putting on ridge cap on a white roof! Had to wash the blood off the roof before we left.

Oh! When I bought my TBII Stiletto, I immediately destroyed the knuckle hide on my left index finger. The milled face was brand new and I was swinging for the fences on a 20d pole barn spike.
Curved claw is standard 9n England. the only people I know that use straight claw hammers, including me, are people obsessed with tools.
i use ball on ball peen hammer to slightly indent drywall of where a nail was for a place to put drywall mud

The Perkins are my favorite form of entertainment.
I've seen a lot of electricians use the rip claw style for hammering staples in between studs. That curled claw gives you a little bit more range to swing.

Peening hammer is used to stress relive metal. Spring on chipping hammer is to reduce the felt shock like a rubber handle but won't burn.
harry the home owner hammer is also a plumber hammer .. hook a pipe to pull it away from the board .. and the framing hammer with the straight claw is liked by roofers for ripping of shingles and if they slip they can hook the claw in the wood of the roof so they don't fall off the roof you can't stab a curved claw in the roof as your slipping ..

That tack hammer may be (or at least reminds me of) a caning hammer which is used when caning a chair seat or back.
I just bought an identical hammer to the one he’s calling a tack hammer today. It was at an estate sale. I don’t think it’s a tack hammer because of the wedge shaped end of the head doesn’t look like the magnetized versions other people are calling tack hammers. I’m gonna have to search for caning hammers now to see more about them.
You guys should check out a slate hammer. I haven’t seen you guys do any slate but I think you would appreciate it

Stilletto used to make a drywall hammer with a wooden handle that had a magnet at the bottom of the handle. I liked it so much that when the handle broke I removed the magnet and installed it into the new handle.
I like hammers too.

"Harry Homeowner" there is also known as a trim hammer. It is lighter in weight to aid in precision and the curved claw is supposed to do less damage to delicate trim work, at least that's the way I heard it.
The "claws" straight claw=framing hammer the rounded claw= finish hammer. Rounded claw less damage to finish surface and fits the finish nails better.
The Estwing old school was awesome. I forgot about them.

That extra long one you got from your dad is most likely an Estwing "Big Blue" Builder Series Framing Hammer; or at least that's the closest thing to it that they currently make. If the specs on the old one are the same as the current ones it's a 25oz head and 18' overall.
As a master Carpenter I can guarantee you from experience that a curved clawhammer will grab smaller nails even brad nails much easier than a straight claw hammer! 🔨....
With that said I must admit that I prefer a straight clawed estwing or even the new dynamic DeWalt hammers which are my favorite so far! As they absorb the shock like nothing else I've used and they are very light yet they swing and hit like a much heavier Hammer!!!
Their balance and shape is the best in the business they just got it right and they're not the most expensive by any means!!!
I'm sure many people will disagree or not believe me about the DeWalt hammers but I have used three different ones and they have shocked me with their excellent design the newer design is the best that I've used and I've had a lot of hammers the original East wings are still my old favorite but the new dewalt's are great the DeWalt generation right before the new ones was lacking in a lot of design aspects but they sure did fix it as of 2023!!!
And you forgot the framers/riggers axe maybe you can get another

It is pronounced Estwing, and not Eastwing. This a huge debate among some of us years ago, so we called the company to find out!
I hit my thumb once on a jobsite and just about barfed. Made me lightheaded. I was driving some framing nails on a perpendicular interior wall into an exterior wall. I had my hand a good 18-24” above the nail I was nailing supporting myself while I was driving some nails around knee level… my hammer caught the end of a pex pipe midswing that was coming out of the slab and it bounced my hammed towards my thumb, hitting it. OUCH. My thumbnail came loose from the nailbed (yuck…). Blood everywhere. Immediately dunked my hand into the cooler full of ice. Took a break for a while to keep from passing out. It was a hot humid July summer day in GA. Got back to work after about an hour break, but definitely felt pretty queezy and almost yaked. My thumbnail never grew back right, still looks goofy 15-16 years later.
Brother Macgyver03ga, funny thing; I have a little different reaction when I inadvertently hurt myself while working - I get REALLY pissed-off, + explode with anger! Um, I don't break or throw anything - I just DETONATE. Before working with others, I sometimes have to "pre-warn" them of this. Been this way my entire life - pain brings ANGER.
FYI the shaw shank hammer or tack hammer is a sheet metal hammer. I was looking for the difference between setting hammer and riviting hammer within sheet metal. I believe the one you had was a riviting hammer because it's smaller and like you said can get in tighter places. Great video though 👌 👏 👍

Ruger firearms. They used to have a titanium manufacturing plant in the USA for their guns and I guess Stiletto used them to make the original titanium hammer heads. I was lucky enough to find a vintage one in great condition and put a 19" dalluge wood handle on it. It's pretty much my favorite hammer but I still use a TB3 on the daily. After swinging a Stiletto for what must be close to a decade I can't seem to adjust to others that I'm sure are still great like the M1 or Arlos Douglas!

Had to laugh when you showed us the hammer you always carry, the one with the worn-smooth waffle face. I thought they wore smooth from using a cat's paw to remove nails, i.e. remove bent nails or disassemble a mistake. That's how mine wore out.

The drywall hammer, is that the same as the roofers ax hammer? A hatchet on one end and a hammer face on the other? And I believe the shawshank hammer is a rock hammer.
Drywall hammers and roofing hatchets are similar, but different.
Keep that stilleto/ruger hammer head, they are relatively rare now!

All would have been appropriate. You didn't even say "Hammer Time" from "U Can't Touch This".

@@thebuildingknowledgechanne7799 I got the hammer when I was 20 years old. I used it for driving Frnce Staples building Barbwire fence. He stayed in the toolbox on my big red three wheeler. It stayed in the truck. With my real job that I had at the time I was in farming I used it for building bracing for the railroad cars. Since the faces were smooth it’s kind of got parked and not used
