    In complete contrast to "matching the hatch" for trout, when fishing Atlantic salmon, they are taking a fly for undetermined reasons as technically they're not even feeding when they enter the river from the sea. There are flies that seem to do better at certain times of the year or the time of the day but sometimes it's a almost complete guess what to use...certainly doesn't matter what bugs are in the air for those fish.

    I grew up fishing the Mad in and around Springfield. Quite a river over the years. I've fly fished since the early 50s and enjoy your videos and comments. I've followed and met both Lefty and Skip several times and they are excellent mentors. Keep up the good work.

    This is interesting, I fly fish in NZ where orange is taboo. There's stories about how our trout spook easier than overseas fish but thinking about it this must be BS. I'm going to grab an orange line today. Cheers

      I use orange or yellow lines when nymphing, but mostly the olive Triangle Taper lines for very spooky trout when dry fly fishing in clear streams.
      But one thing is clear, here I absolutely agree with Brian:
      A perfect presentation is the most important thing, no matter what fly line you use.

  • @michaelsullivan988

    I use hi vis green or yellow in floating lines for the same reason.
    For sinking I use dark tips.

    Awesome information,the only time I think fly line color is a factor is in still water,but only at certain times,for the most part love a bright line for casting & visibility,tight lines & bent rods 🤘

    I just got an order of Flip High Vis and used it on...
    Catfish, Carp, Bass, Musky, Pike, and Trout. Only difference I notice is the line is easier to see for me, and I can see small movements at the leader connection when using streamers for "sippy, lippy" fish

    • @Madriveroutfitters
      @Madriveroutfitters  3 года назад +1

    I'm late to the party here but I have to say that a black sinking line is actually remarkably easy to pick out in salt water over some of the more commonly considered "bright colours". I've seen research on black as a colour for safety hoods for yacht crew as it stands out well against the sea so perhaps this is linked. Love the bright stuff for my floating lines though!

    What you do for a living actually does a lot of benifit to the world. It brings people outside, get in touch with nature. It brings joy and relaxes people. That might help a firefighter save babies and a doctor do surgery. I am serious, its important for a healthy society.

    I am 62, live in central PA and have been fly fishing since 10 and tying flies since 12. When I was quite young fly line colors were very limited, Cortland had a "peach" color, that's one of the few "bright" colors I remember that were available. The vast majority of the "older" guys in that day strongly advocated for lines that blended in with the surroundings. I knew of a guy who actually dyed all of his fly lines dark olive green... which, as much as he was in the trees made sense! (LOL) I seem to remember a line company actually marketing a camouflage style line! When I started using the peach colored Cortland line I got ribbed mercilessly.... even though I was catching as much if not more than everybody else. Unfortunately a lot of "marketing" schemes are driven more by "sales" made than fish caught!

    Just a suggestion as someone with ties to MFG, and I fully understand the implications, plus I'm sure this idea has crossed you desk numerous times, but perhaps you should get into the supply side of the industry to fill the void that is not fulfilled by the current supply chain? I know, there are a multitude of reasons not to, but it sounds like the consumer's needs, and best practices, are not being met by the current supply chain, when experts are experiencing different, real-world results. I say this as a very, very humble subscriber. I truly love the content you provide (for free) to your subscribers. Please, please, keep the content coming, and know that my comments are intended as a curiosity and NOT, by any means, as criticism. It just feels like you could OWN a segment of this industry.
