BTW, Here is a good look of this technique in action. This match is from the 1981 World Cup with Gene Mills beating Olympic Champion Anatoli Beloglasov, in the process he hits this move twice in the same match. Look up Gene Mills vs Anatoli Beloglasov. Hope this helps.
In wrestling, the front headlock is a advantageous position. My coach once said, "If you get the front headlock, YOU MUST SCORE." What I'm saying is that this move will only work on someone unfamiliar with the position, unlike a double leg which is initiated from a neutral position.
You have to do this escape INCREDIBLY FAST imo sir. I actually can attest to that. I got in a fight recently and ended up in that same position and when i tried to escape I wasnt fast enough. I did it exactly like this. By the time I had pulled the elbow I was blacking out. It was in a small confined space so I couldnt move crawl back :(. Lucky for me I had my nephew there and when I was tapping the guy didnt let go even though I was showing "hey you beat me...dont kill me...let go". My nephew jumped on the opponent in a rear naked choking him until he let go of me.
+ollhashedfetish It actually works but you have to be very aware of your environment. I stopped training fighting skills about 10 years ago ( life got in the way ) so every once in a while I will get a partner and practice stuff like this. But as I said, the fight i got in was on the porch, in a slight rain and I slipped two times got caught in that hold, went to do the move which instantly came to me but there was a bunch of crap on the porch like chairs, tables, etc and couldnt roll.
What do you do when he puts his left arm on your back and with his right arm grasp his left. Then wraps the legs. Now he has head and can pop it off like a grape. What do you do in that spot
p.s. My argument still stands firm on its own, but if you are looking for an authority to back up claims, I am a bjj black belt and a 4 time medalist (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) at the FILA world championships, not to mention you also have a Abu Dhabi world champion in Pablo Popovitch showing the technique! Try it and learn it well and I promise you it will work. The key is to not allow a front headlock to get so tight by keeping your elbows in and away from crossing in front of your neck.
This is a good basic escape. I wouldn't use this technique though against a higher level wrestler or grappler. A good wrestler will keep the elbow high and tucked tight making it almost impossible to do the short arm drag or sucker drag as it's more commonly referred. The peek out to the far side is a much better option.
How is this working for you guys? In my group we've got guy with 30 year wrestling experience who dominates using a front-headlock. I've watched him hold an ADCC Lightweight Champ, a Judo Olympic Gold Heavyweight, and a UFC Welterweight contender (who fought GSP) using his front headlock for 10 minutes, then they escape when he goes for a sloppy anaconda choke or finally goes to the back. I've got 10 years no-gi BJJ experience but no real Wrestling and I'll take ANY advice on escaping this position.
you have to sit-out fast and hard on the side they have the overhook. or, you can sit out to the side that's under your neck while pulling down on their elbow. this will either allow you to take the back or create a nasty quick kind of reverse arm lock (if they don't forward roll)
Again, you are mistaken. Your coach is right to tell you, you must score in a front headlock. I do the same to my team. The drag out to escape the front headlock is the best move and is taught by every wrestling coach all over the world. You can watch this move performed successfully at all levels of wrestling including world and olympic championships. Pablo discussed how the front headlock becomes inescapable and how beat it. Neutral has nothing to do with whether a move can be defended.
Are you kidding? How many times has it been hit exactly in the olympics? it's a pretty low percentage move. And neutral has everything to do with defending a move. Tell me, is it easier to defend a double leg before he comes ito contact with your legs or after he's connected his hands and started driving? You are under the misconception that someone who slaps on the front headlock will just use it as a stalling position.
there are 2 sides to every position, your statement is like saying good luck getting a double leg takedown on someone that knows how to sprawl. Of course a guy needs to be setup and taken out of good position. You may not like his partner in the demo but the technique is a great move.
Every competitor needs a defense or counter offense. This is the move of choice for most. Do you just give up once in a front headlock position? This is what every great wrestler has used and pulled off at times. Im through arguing, I have done my best to try to help someone i dont know understand more about grappling. if you dont care to improve then why are you on youtube criticizing the technique of a world champ like Pablo??
asking how many times it is hit in the plympics is an unanswerable question just like how many crotchlifts have been hit. You missed the point, as discussed in the video, dragging out of the front headlock often times makes the top grappler release and let go because of the consequences of holding on. Most of the time a grappler gets out of a front headlock it is because of this move. The front headlock is a common position. i never said it is a good position to put yourself in.
Front headlock is great position don't care what people says knowing the counters are great but he doesn't explain about catching another snap just my opinionsnap snap snap can't stress enough but I know nothing

All of Pablo's techniques are high level. Thanks man
thank you sir

Beautiful demo - an interesting variation is to ROLL sideways into the arm your trapping. my 21 stone training partner went flying !
Awesome vid!

Great lesson, these are really helping me.

GL trying that if the guy on top applies the front headlock correctly - keeps his elbow in, twists the chin, and has a good solid base with his knee
I was taught another escape but this seems nice and I´ll try to learn it...

Looks like Vitor Belfort
What about the guillotine? Thanks for the vid!
What brand are his opponents shorts? I'm looking for a pair of grappling shorts that don't have a bunch of writting all over them. Cheers.
