Could you detail why you chose the 7' umbrella along with the strip light on the sides please? BTW, I grew in Myrtle Beach, SC (now in San Francisco). Nice to see great photography coming out of South Carolina!
Really enjoy your sports peak performance photography,....That's where I am heading :) Love that c stand boomed over subject...Who makes that! Thanks and again appreciate your work!
Congratulations on the CA Award! Were you using the RF 24-70 again? When you used one hand to lower the light I may have gasp, lol...I so want that boom!
Loved seeing your work flow. Very helpful. My video prof, who you might have worked with previously, Pouyan Fard sent me to your channel. Happy he did - new subscriber. Look forward to learning more from you.
Thanks James, great video. Coaching your subjects is a vital part of the process, especially for action shots. Although you still need it for traditional portraits.
Hey James. Great video as always! A question or two if you don’t mind. What Profoto’s were you using? I noticed they were mains/pack powered? The D1/D2’s? The consistency of the flashes great! Also, every frame is pin sharp. Were you using Eye tracking on the R5? I’ve heard it’s amazing. You’ve probably answered all these so my apologies in advance. Thanks again for the great content!
No worries, I'll give you a pass since you mentioned me in your YT video 😎. I'm using Profoto B1's (battery powered) for the most part but I also have 2 D2's when power is available. Yes, eye-tracking on the R5 - which defaults to face/head when it can't detect the eye.
Hi James! I absolutely love your work and these videos! I have watched most of them and maybe someone has already asked about this... but do you have any video instruction on your lighting set up for a shoot like this one? On this shoot... did you have some of those lights on different channels to fire each one at different power settings? And I love those boom arms! You are GREAT! Thank you for your willingness to share your expertise!
Hey Corey, I try my best to keep it simple. I don't use multiple channels since it would make me anxious! I do however sometimes cut all the lights with the remote and then turn on select one to create a different look. I'll try to include more lighting info in an upcoming BTS for a NHL team!
Are 100% of your action shots used as composites in post production? If not 100%, what percentage is? I'm asking because I noticed you're never worried about your lights being in the image
The biggest problem I find in portraiture is getting models facial expressions right and this is especially a problem when composing in real tight, do you have ay tips on how to get models to relax so that natural smiles etc come through rather than fixed grins?
Everyone is different so it's a matter of ready the situation and putting your subject at ease. It's def a learned skill and harder with some than others.
I watch everything you upload, and rewatch some stuff. Incredible work, great vibe. You definetly deserve more recognition here on RUclips!
I appreciate that!
I can relate to this Daniel, in the process as well
It will come. He will be one day recognised as photography royalty.
Excellent and Great Sharing ... Your channel is under rated, you deserve much more viewers and followers.
I appreciate that, Gatot!

I was about to ask this too!!
Appreciate the walk through of the entire process! Keep it up James!
Thanks, Tony!
Really enjoy your videos and congratulations on the award. Yes, any peek behind the curtain you want to share with us about your process is welcome.
I appreciate that, David, thanks!
Thanks for the encouragement Quantz, need much. I struggle with fear too
Congrats on your well-earned award. Will be using your advice about changing angles to be more dynamic and less flat.
Glad it was helpful!
CONGRATS!!!!

Thanks Scott! Pouyan is the best!
To get such fast recycling times do you keep the flash power to a minimum?
Great video!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Excellent thank you Will take alot of tips with me
Glad it was helpful!
Congrats on the award! Well deserved.
Thanks, Jimmy!

Very true!
Congrats on the award, James! Great video as always!
Thanks, Paul!
I love watching your video. On your Patreon site do you show the lighting set up and what and why you have it set that way
Hey Steve, there is a lot more info on my Patreon regarding lighting specifics. Thanks for the kind words!
Appreciate the content, James! Big fan of your work!
Thank you so much, Luiza!
Good as always, congrats for the award. And keep it up 👍
Thank you so much! 😀
Congratulations!
Thank you!
Congratulations
Thanks!
Thanks for all the great information James! I'm wondering with these action shots if you ever have trouble with sync speed?
Hardly at all since the flash duration times have gotten so fast!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Gonzalo!
@@QuantzPhoto The three photographers I follow are in Commarts: RJ Muna, Joel Grimes and now you!

Oh I’ve just watched a video of yours on the R5 now, wow, that face and eye tracking is amazing! That could help me make the jump.
No worries, I'll give you a pass since you mentioned me in your YT video 😎.

Yes, game-changer coming from the mirror world...
I dont like what you Do.
I LOVE IT
Amazing
Best regards

Aki, thank you!!

James, congratulations on your work, are excellent! Would you like to know what software you use when capturing photos?
Yes, Capture One pro. Check out my "Tethering 101" video!
Hey James, have you considered playing royalty-free music while you’re shooting so you can use that bts footage and audio?
Hey Landon, not really but if you watch the video I posted after this one you can hear me directing the players.
Great job as always. Thanks for sharing. Can you share one of the final edited image?
Sure, I haven’t gotten that far yet! 😂
@@QuantzPhoto Thanks. I enjoy seeing your finished product!
I saw that you have a GFX100 in a previous video. Can you show us a shoot using that medium format camera?
Hey Jameel, sure I just need a shoot where it's needed first! 😂
Hi, Love your videos. What lens are you using with Westbrook? 100mm macro?
Thanks, Juan! I believe that's a 24-70mm 2.8 on a Nikon D850
COULD YOU DO THIS WITH A TWO LIGHT SET UP SINCE YOU DON'T LIGHT THE FACE? (IN THE FIRST SET) Last, HSS ???
Love the way you are mixing up the rim light modifiers. Just sent you an email!
Got it!
Thanks James. What were you're cam and light settings? HSS?
Camera at 1/200 which is the max sync when not shooting HSS
Are 100% of your action shots used as composites in post production? If not 100%, what percentage is? I'm asking because I noticed you're never worried about your lights being in the image
Hey Jack, not all of them. Lights can be removed easily and usually they're cropped tighter...
@@QuantzPhoto gotcha
Are these done in High Speed Sync to capture the athletes moves and freeze the action?
Hey Andy, no I'm relying on the short flash duration from the Profoto strobes!
With you shooting on a dark background is that going to be the final look or will the players be cutout?
Both!
Hi there.. What tether software do you use again? I use ligthroom and it's driving me crazy! its a hit and miss
I use Capture One - Check my "Tethering 101" video!
@@QuantzPhoto I did watch it. Thanks again.
Did you keep the backdrop or replace the backdrop from this shoot?
I didn't use a backdrop - just found a dark area in the background and let the lights do the rest.
