- The new NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is the best Android streaming box that money can buy right now. It comes with a beefy Tegra X1+ chipset and 3GB of RAM, but the internal storage is limited at 16GB. If that doesn't sound like enough storage space for your media needs, you can make use of the NVIDIA Shield TV's USB ports and mount an external storage device to easily expand your available storage.
In this video I show you how I did it and made room for my favourite Apps plex server ,Kodi server ,Sideload chrome, X-plore file manager, geforce now, steam link.

I need it for games .. I use emulators for psp and wii and the games made me have issue with storage too low and I can not use my nividia and even I can't control it to try to remove any apps or games to back to work normally 😢

Thank you for the effort you put into this video. After this installation (via the USB) what kind of File data transfer speeds are you (or anyone reading this) getting (downloading to and uploading from the Shield). To be clear, I am not asking for a generalized (or guess type) of comment like "speeds should be faster". I am asking & hoping for a more detailed and specific answer please. I ask because I have done something similar but the speed to transfer and / or read and write data is much slower than the results that I expected (and I am trying to figure out if your solution cures my issue before I execute you solution). Help! :-)

Hey K very cool video. I just swapped a tube for a pro and was going to use an external drive just as a DVR for TV Mate and then I saw this!! I see the SSD and adapter are less than $40. I use my shield for audio video and Nvidia GeForce Now gaming. Do you think this would help?

So, now being used as an internal drive, anything installed will be stored on the SSD? Are you seeing speeds at leat 400-500 speeds?, I wanted to try a 2 tb 870 EVO on my 16gig shield units.

Good video however I don’t know why you used the ssd you did with the adapter etc? A Samsung T7 simply plug into the usb with the cable included format it and done.
Do you format it in a computer first & if so do you want to format it in exfat?
@@Rammer_Jammer with the Samsung T5 or T7 you just let the Nvidia Shield format it. When you plug the usb chord of the ssd into one of the slots in the back of the shield a notification will pop up on the home screen that a storage drive has been recognized then you select if you want to use it as internal storage or removable storage. If you select internal storage then that ssd can only work on that shield and nothing else. If you want to move downloaded apps to the ssd you just enable developer options then enable force allow to external. Then go into settings then installed apps then click on an app you downloaded. Then click storage used and you will see the option to keep the app on the internal storage or move it to the ssd the shield formatted and it will move it. No computer needed at all.

@@Rammer_Jammer one more thing…i would suggest the Samsung T7 ssd if you plan on keeping your shield for awhile. They have crazy read write speeds and just an overall excellent ssd. Sandisk Extreme ssd i read is very good too.
I've just ordered an SSD an one of those cables as well. I'm going to use the Kingston 240GB SSD that's in my laptop and take the one I ordered (128GB Silicon Power SSD) and put it in my laptop.

Will that sabrent raid conndctor allow you to put a sheild kmage and bootloader on then install into sheild? Any ideas as mine is locked on boot screen and cant access bootloader at all. Any help appreciated

Why not simply use the drive as external storage? Apps like Kodi and Retroarch can access the drive as a external drive. Then you have your apps on the 16gb internal drive and the data on the external which allows you to unplug the drive from the shield and plug it into a pc to load content to it and then move it back.
Sounds practical but Retroarch no longer reads the external drive (at least with the latest update). I had to modify retroarch's config file to be able to read the external drive.

This is exactly what I want to do, but I thought that to get a USB storage device to work with a Shield you had to format it in such a way that it'd no longer be recognised by a PC?

Bought a 128GB SanDisk A2 SD card with a Ugreen usb adaptor. The SD card cannot be setup as internal storage.

I've ordered a 512GB USB 3 thumb drive from SanDisk and that was 60€. I assume a 240 GB SSD plus an adapter is about the same cost. Plus the SSD is huge when you compare it to the USB thumb drive. This is quite an unnecessary process to add storage to the Shield.
About half that cost 👍
@@TechFigure Okay, if that's the case and you're okay with it. I've checked the prices for the stuff you've used where I live and here it's about the same price. Yet I would have more storage with my 512GB USB 3 thumb drive where you're stuck with 240GB. I hope you see my point here. If I would use a 512GB SSD it would be even more costly in the end as I still would use the SSD to USB adapter and I still would have a bulky piece of hardware attached to the Shield.
Hey Evander Quinn could you send me a link to the thumb drive,i git an nvidia pro and id like ti expand the storage using a thumb ,a lot less clutter
The speed of the thumb drive will be much lower and it will start struggling with heat if you're moving large amounts.

Hi, I followed your steps to setting up the extra storage on my SSD external drive no problem. However I am now struggling to transfer anything over if I plug it into my pc to transfer over it doesn’t recognise it. Then if I just use it as a removable hard drive my internal storage is maxed out!!....help please. A video would be superb.
Once you've formatted a drive as adoptable storage to your shield you can only use it with that shield. You'll need to transfer files digitally or using a second storage device.
Really, SSD to USB? Might as well have a high speed USB thumb drive. Less money, similar performance, and much smaller
There are reports of people using thumb drives and have overheated and stopped working, Ssd is just a better option
