  • Here are some interesting facts regarding the Acura TL Type S from the 2007 to 2008 model years. The Type S recieved many updates and changes compared to the regular TL like a 3.5l V6 engine vs the 3.2l V6. See my 2004-2008 Acura TL Video: • 2004-2008 Acura TL.. W...

But one question no one has answered which I’ve posted before. Looks aside, how much better is the S over its base counterpart?
With my experience, I’d say 10-15% tops. Brembo with manual, extra suspension rigidity, 3.5 larger engine. You could make a base the same for relatively affordability!

I had a 2014 Audi A4 6sp with a stage 1 tune. Dumped that when i got my 08 type s 6sp. TL is so much better. The A4 was probably faster, but 0 fun. I swore off turbo cars after that. They had similar ride quality, but the TL handles like a sports car should. I'm always looking for my next car, but there is nothing i could replace this with. Naturally aspirated, hydraulic steering, and not throttle by wire, you cannot beat the responsiveness. A major factor for me is the close ratio gear box. I did not enjoy shifting the A4. One of the reasons the manual transmission is dead is they had to make the gears so tall for mileage and emissions. Only thing that could make it better would be rwd. What could I replace this with? 1st gen CTS V? G37 sedan? Too afraid of BMW maintenance cost. I was thinking of a new Civic type R. I want to test drive, but the numbers suggest similar ish performance, and turbo lag.
We need to petition Tesla to take the clutch pedal and shifter from a computer racing simulator, and program a manual mode. Yes, it would make the car slower, you either get it or you don't. Spread the word on that. We'll all probably have to get an electric car sooner or later.

The transmission issues with the TL were the 2nd generation.
I owned a 2006 TL and got to 160K miles and never had issues. Sold it for an RDX but missed having a car. Two years ago I bought the 2008 Acura TL Type S in the Kinetic Blue Pearl - my all time favorite color. Finding one of these is extremely hard, especially with no accident, no cracked dash board, and been taken care of. Especially in the blue. It’s a ton of fun and I love driving it. Very sharp looking car and by far the best looking generation. It is heavy though and the maintenance is extremely important to keep up on.

Actually. If I could disagree respectfully with known data. The 2004-2006 indeed had transmission issues. It was alleviated in the 07-08 models.

My takeaway from this video is that the 2004/05 tl is basically a baby type S, but arguably better. If you get the 04/05 manual with navigation, the tech is almost the same save for a reverse camera. The brakes/suspension are the same. The 3.2 is more reliable than the 3.5. Im personally purchasing a 2005 tl manual with navigation all stock somewhat locally for a fair price. Ive sourced a stock 07/08 type s exhaust that ill be swapping in as well as wheels. Im confident if i were to dyno it-it would yield very similar #'s to a type s.

It's amazing to know that the Acura TL of this generation was the best selling luxury sport sedan during its time, with over 70,000 units sold, beating out the BMW 3 series, the Audi S4, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Lexus IS, the Infiniti G, all of those competitors. I can see why~ Acura really hit the jackpot with this TL, and I honestly think this car was the peak for Acura in terms of design and driving dynamics.

I hate to be that guy, but no issues were had with the manual transmissions. The autos were the main suspects and this didn't get resolved until 07.

The secret to preserving any transmission is to always use your e-brake when parking even if it’s an automatic. Won’t make much difference on a flat surface but when parking on an incline/decline road it will because the weight of the car is held by the e-brake and not on your transmission. Not using e-brake when parking on a sloped surface will put all the stress of the car’s weight on the transmission so every time you shift into R or D, you will hear/feel the transmission grinding which damages it completely over time. Using the e-brake properly one should never feel/hear a transmission grinding like that.
Another big no-no when driving is to shift from R to D while the car is still moving backwards, this damages the transmission as well.
My 06 TL base auto is at 400k miles on the original transmission so my claim has pretty solid support.

I was on my 4th transmission on a 2000 Accord. Then, I bought the 2008 Acura TL (knock on wood no transmission issues yet - 120,000 miles).

I never drove the Type-S as I had moved on to the BMW E90 during this time. On the 06 TL 6MT, I have to disagree with you on handling. The car's handling limitations were quite obvious, even on moderately curvy public roads. This car was at its best as a grand tourer. It was completely outclassed by its RWD competition in the twisties. Even if the Type-S was improved, it wasn't going to touch an E90 or even the G35.
    Well done video.

Yea for sure the RWD bimmers and Infiniti cars were still better the Type S helps to close the gap I preferred it for sure over the regular TL

Duly noted. But German engineering and their costs. The Infiniti brand which suffered after Nissan merged with Renault. You can’t find perfection. But the 3rd gen is terrific. Plus the sales were utterly impressive.
