I am a traveling Superintendent for a construction company and I live out of hotels most of the time. so I figured rather than pack up my belongings every time they moved me to a job it would be cheaper and more comfortable to buy an RV. So I went to a Camping World lot in Greenwood, Ind and sat down with the Salesman. I proceeded to tell him that my company had paid around $15,000.00 for me to stay in hotels and that i was looking to purchase something in that price range. The response I got was "we don't have any thing new in that price range and we don't get many trades" At that point I could see that they were not interested in my 15,000. so I got up to leave, funny thing was he suddenly remembered he had something coming in I may be interested in, he took down my info and said he would call and send pictures....he never did. So I felt that they were just scamming to sell new and I wrote them an e-mail telling them that i had never been treated so poorly by an establishment in the RV industry in my life. The response was rapid, as soon as I hit send a bot responded with questions... one of the first was what is your phone #. I gave it to them. Soon I was called by customer service (lol) the name she gave was Amy she said she was a corporate customer service rep. and ask what she could do to rectify the situation...I told her there was nothing she could do ...if you aren't interested in my money someone will be...we hung up...within 5 minutes one of the sales managers from the Greenwood, Ind. called and apologized and said he didn't understand how a salesman could say that because most of their inventory was 15,000 or under and that he would appreciate the opportunity to show me what they had available. So shortly after that I called the store with a blocked phone number and spoke to another Salesman that said they didn't really have any 15,000 dollar RV's on the lot but that he had several @ 17,000 if I was interested. At that point I realized hotels are not that bad inconvenient maybe ....but much better than dealing with thieves. Then I saw your video and all the statements you made the salesman made. So thank you for this forum and good luck ...Corporate America sucks.

Started to buy one from Camping World five years ago. When I declined the extended warranty, I was told that because it was a demo unit, there was no factory or dealer warranty on it. Cancelled the sale and walked out. What I've learned about Camping World tactics and service since then - some from two former employees, certainly make me feel walking away from them was the right thing to do. Thank you for the video.

I recently found a Cougar Travel Trailer on CW for $24,995! However, their salesman sent me a quote and here's what they added on:
    Doc Prep Fee= $399
    Set Up= $1495
    Transport= $1850
    Licensing= $525
That an additional total of $4269!!
    Will NOT be going here!

I worked for Camping World for about three years. Never in my 20 years working in the auto motive/recreational vehicle career have I witnessed the kind of things that happened there.
From the down right incompetence of management (our GM was a legitimate alcoholic who drank on the job daily and rarely upheld any promises) to a constant flow of under qualified employees working on RV’s.
For example, to be a technician at Camping World, you legitimately need NO certification and only minimal ‘handyman’ experience.
While we did have a few trained/certified techs, many were not.
We also had a high turn over rate.
It was common to see the guys in the recon department woefully underpaid and lacking the devices/tools needed to correctly do their jobs.
For instance, they would charge customers over a thousand plus dollars to detail their RV’s (included in the purchase price) and would demand that employees detail an entire RV within a few hours. While they were paid a whopping $10 an hour. That’s TWO dollars less than what Dunkin Donuts pays here!
Better yet, when a female detailer came on the team...she had equal experience but was paid $8 an hour.
Often we would see people come in and spend easily over $500+ to detail their RV and they would get nothing but a quick wash.
Customers would also be upsold on various ‘paint protection’ chemicals that would NOT be applied, better yet...if they did, it would be an extremely cheap spray foam that anyone could easily do at home with a regular hose and $25.
I also never witnessed someone fully redeem their paint and protection policy. Customers ALWAYS had to pay more.
The best parts were when people from their corporate offices would come up and literally hold a big meeting with everyone...
Where they would belittle, intimidate and literally threaten employees.
I verbatim recall when he said that the techs would NO longer be paid for RV inspections (causing the techs who were flat rate, to rush their inspections even more) and when a tech spoke up about how they were essentially working for free then...he was then informed (in verbatim) ‘then you can get your shit, and get the hell out of here’ .
Knowing that there were little jobs for RV techs in our state of NH.
I could go on and on, but this is just a taste of what I witnessed.
From sexual harassment claims (multiple against the same person for instance) that went unheard and even the manager getting an employee pregnant during their secret affair (while he was married) and even giving her a promotion!
(This is before the secret got out)
If you EVER need someone to come on and give a testimony, with proof, I would love to go into detail.
I have nothing to hide, and will gladly show my face and let everyone know the truth.
Also, I met Marcus once. I had an interesting experience with him too.
FYI The Camping World I worked at use to be a private dealer with a well known reputation.
Within a year of Camping World buying them, that reputation was destroyed.

    • @kevinlizak3370
      @kevinlizak3370 5 лет назад +8

Eric, I commend you for being honest and up front, maybe it will save people from there ways. They did just what they normally do, come to town, buy out a local dealer and trash the reputation. I live in Hamburg NY, I can walk to the Camping world store from my house and would never buy an RV from them. a matter of fact I just bought a new RV from a place over an hour from my house. All the local dealers are crap.
I did stop by one of there remote shows to see models and floor plans and for the hell of it I sat down to see what they had to say, lets say that conversation lasted 5 minutes, using there low price to suck you in is nothing but lies, but yet so many get sucked into it.
When they came to town and bought out the local reputable dealer they actually shut the doors 2 years later so they could fire all the staff from the previous dealer, to only open there store at the same spot 1 year later with all there own sleasy staff.

Retired in 2016. Wife and I decided to get back into camping we enjoyed when the kids were young. Started our search on line. Came up on a camping world site. The advertisement was for a 2018 14’ Starcraft AR1. The big text price offered it for 9998. That’s what drew me in. Well we had some cash and I contacted camping world. I wanted to pay cash for the 9998. I thought I might gain some additional discount for the cash instead I was informed that was not a cash price. I was told if I wanted to pay cash the price would be 14888. I told the sales person that’s not how it works. You offer cash the price goes down not up. He informed me the 9998 price was a special finance deal thru camping world. I informed him I was done dealing with them now or in the future. Went back on line and found a used 2016 Starcraft 14’ AR1 for 8000 cash at Parkway Campers out of Westminster, SC. They completely went over the camper before the purchase and made sure everything worked. A Mom and Pop outfit that takes care of the customer. We dodged a bullet!

We were looking at Thor RVs, and found one for about $115K that met our needs and wants. First, they never would allow us to test drive it. We currently own an RV the same length, registered to us, that could be confirmed with DMV. And the salesman could have gone with us. But we were told it would never happen. Then they wanted to go in the office and talk financing. Without even a test drive? I told them no way. Then they told us our existing RV was only going to get us a $6500 credit. Excuse me? It’s an anniversary edition, with new wood flooring a newly rebuilt front end and new shocks. They acted shocked that I said they were crazy because it Blue Booked well over 35K. We walked across the street to a place called Royal Coach. The salesperson we got said he used to work for CW and had to leave as he just couldn’t do things how they wanted him to do it. And he had the highest sales of every employee, yet they didn’t want him to properly disclose and be honest with his customers. He suggested we wait until we have sold our existing RV, and for us to obtain our own financing before we come back, if we choose to buy from his current employer. Not that they were like CW, but because it was better financially for us. I told my husband that is where we will go when we get our ducks in a row.

With nothing better to do one day we stopped at a Camping World store just out of the Gulf Shores area in Alabama (we were on vacation) . I have been high pressured by sales people before, but these guys at Camping World gave new meaning to high pressure. I don't know how many times my wife and I said we were just killing some time and wanted to look at some RV's. That didn't seem to register in this guys mind. He just kept up with the "blitz krieg" tactics and after 30 minutes of this I finally asked him what part of we are just looking around don't you understand. He kept on smiling and asked just what he had to do to get us into a new RV. That's when we walked out on him in mid sentence. We still by some of our supplies at Camping World but under no circumstances would we ever enter the lot to look at the RV's.

Thank you for speaking out.. I also was taken at Camping world. I wanted a used 2014 B+ Pleasure-way I drive 2K miles to pick up and purchase with cash in hand. Had the price and the deal nailed down. The sale person make one error , I made sure he stated in the last e-mail the detail of the deal , so when. they pulled that line I had to take loan, I placed the e-mail document on the managers desk, he called the sale person in. This salesman came in and for ever the reason he stool by me. The manager was so mad you could see him , giving the salesman the LOOK.. Anyway it was a ruff sale , the worse I ever have experience I have to say. The good news is the RV unit we purchased was in great shape and so far we are happy. However you are correct WHEN SAYING: STAY AWAY FROM CAMPING !!!! They are the worse ...

Well done! A courageous and helpful video. I too came close to being fleeced by CW on several occasions. I was once told I needed a whole new membrane roof to replace a two year old roof! No other area shop could find a defect in our existing roof! When a local RV sales and service company finally opened a shop next door to CW, I switched my business to them. They said that many, MANY new customers told them the same story. I wished Cheyenne operated in Idaho.

Some time back, we saw a fifth wheel at an rv show, and thought we would visit a Camping World to see the inventory. When we said we were just looking, we couldn’t even get someone to unlock some rugs, or put the slides out on others. We were ignored! A salesman told me that I “wanted a Montana, they are the best-selling rigs out there”. Yet, he wouldn’t let us inside a couple, because we said we weren’t buying that day. After we left, we called the manager to report the salesman, who knew exactly who we meant.
The receptionist there was a sweetheart, and we told the manager THAT, too. Too bad she was working for sleazeballs.

That EXACT thing just happened to us at the local Camping World. I've heard the rumblings but decided to just go look. Told them we were just looking "well there are a lot of trailers out there! What do you want? "Well, I dunno, that's why I want to browse and see." "Ok, well most of them are locked." and walked away. So we only got to see in some. The other dealership we went to had every trailer unlocked and ready for viewing.

i can add to this, Don't go to do business with Canopy Country in Washington state. My 4% finance turned out to be 6.25%, guess who gets the 2.25%. This will run for 180 months and cost me $11,457. It certainly isn't the credit union who holds the contract. Learn a lesson from my loss, do business with a reputable dealer and have your attorney go over the contract before you sign, if the dealer refuses to allow your attorney to read the contract, move, the next dealer can get you the same RV.

We have taken our fifthwheel into camping world for repairs thinking that the name had such high regards, well they tried to screw us but only got us for a single tire. When we took our RV in we had an aftermarket warranty that covered everything we took it in for, they tried to charge us for rags, solvents, grease etc.. in the tune of 250.00! then they tried to charge us shipping on everything that they repaired for all the parts, one shipping was $700.00. They damaged our RV not once but twice and had it for well over 3 months for repairs. We have friends who bought their RV at camping world NEW and can't get them to fix anything as camping world says it's not their problem. We never ever recommend Camping world to anyone but to support the mom and pop shops out there. Camping world Birmingham, Alabama is who tried to screw us on our repairs. Matter of fact, we took the service manager in the garage to inspect our RV and in front of all his employees we told him what a piece of crap he was and that any of his subordinates should be doing his job and he should be FIRED! they all looked with smiles. Anyway, they still owe us a tire from their faulty repairs and never heard back from them, 100 bucks is way better than some of you who have written on here, so we are good we got away almost unscathed. If anyone is in Birmingham camping world, go to the service counter and ask for Taylor, you will see first hand what cocky and arrogant looks like.

This man is making this point because he has been selling Rv's for 50 yrs. Cw doesnt accept trade ins.....ask yourself why. Because they are targeting the first time buyer. They dont care about repeat business because They want the quick buck. What the tactics they use are truely doing are going to hurt the whole community. Read any contract before u sign it. U do not need to get charged for a battery, for the finish on the camper, or for your final walk through. I've probably left out some things. A reputable rv dealer wants u to come back and upgrade. To bring your relatives who rv and when grown your kids. I buy my cars at the same dealer because they dont try and screw me over same with an Rv. I'd really like to know why they are getting away with breaking the law!

      Greetings,
Hats off to your time share comparison and thank you for helping others spot the shady sellers.
Just today an Indiana Hoosier reported she shopped a Camping World trailer advertised at $14,999 which became more than $23,000 when CW wrote it up last Saturday.
Most people believe honesty pays. But, not enough to suit Chairman Lemonis, he wants his billion $ and he wants it now.
      Cheers,
      Kevin

Thank you for exposing Camping World for what they really are. I did not purchase my RV from camping world but I experienced much of the same tactics, thankfully my wonderful wife who used to work in a Credit Union knows all about the financing operations and she put the kibosh on those tactics. We walked out of the dealer, agreeing on only one thing, that we would think it over for the night. Upon our arrival back home, we looked online and found the very same unit we were looking at, for $5000.00 cheaper than the dealer we were at. When we went back the next day armed with this newly found tidbit of info, we asked for the same deal as the online place, oh sure we heard the usual Bull about this that and the other darn thing and the "Finance guy" would have to talk to "The Boss" Well they matched the price and gave us some cock and bull story about how they were able to move some profits around from one unit they had just sold so they could match the price, WHATEVER! Bottom line is do your shopping around and don't be afraid to call their bluff and walk out if you don't get what you think is a fair price. Again thanks for posting this video I will be sharing it with my family and friends.

Camping World is a great place to walk around and see lots of RV models. The sales staff are there to sell you, not to really help you. As long as you know that, you will be fine. When it comes time to buy...no matter where you go...do your research. Get a second trusted opinion before signing. There are ALWAYS good deals and there is ALWAYS another rig so don’t feel pressured or rushed.

The tech who went over ours was great. But the sales guy and manager were awful. I don’t trust any camping world anymore and with more buyers coming forward every day, I’m spreading the word. I was talked down to like a child despite being very patient. Then they insulted my relatives that I referred because they had a really ideal unit, but would not consider new. Word is out, crooked thieves with no memory.

This is so true! I wish we had been better prepared before dealing with Camping World Cedar Falls, IA also before driving 8 hours to buy a camper from them. They pressured us for hours with the extended warranties and ridiculous financing options before they would let us walk out of the door with a camper. They also added on $795 freight/transport fee, $695 Set-up fee, and $155 for batteries. We at least got some money back from cancelling the extended warranty and GAP insurance that we never wanted, but they would not let us cancel the Environmental Package which is also something we do not need or wanted.

We have had a fantastic experience at Cheyenne RV and this video is true because we went to Camping World, too!!
We started camper shopping just last week. We stopped by Cheyenne Camping Center, enjoyed wandering and looking at all of the campers we were interested in. We spoke with Kurt, one of the salesmen. Zero pressure!! He showed us exactly what we asked for. I asked him about financing and he recommended that we use our own Credit Union since we were shopping used. He said our own bank would get us a better deal.
We were close to Davenport so we went to Camping World. We had to meet with a salesman before we could even look at a camper. The salesman had to get permission from the manager to show us a camper. There was an automatic 750.00 set up fee on anything we would buy. The salesman didn't show us anything we asked for!
I called Kurt at Cheyenne today and asked to buy the camper that he showed us. It is perfect!!! The financial document he gave me to give to my bank had the price of the camper, tax, title, and license. Nothing else!! No set up or delivery fees. I offered to pay for it today, or leave a deposit, and Kurt said that I can pay when I take delivery. He said Cheyenne doesn't take payment until I accept the camper.
Skip Camping World. Cheyenne Camping Center is where to go!! What you see is what you pay. No high pressure. No salesperson to walk you around.

Camping World has one of the worst rv repair shop ever. Once they have you in there they just set you on the back burner. Then 7 months later !!!!! the battery had been burned up by the shop recharging them . Now they wanted another $420 to replace them. I said I will bring my own new batteries and they wouldn't allow that on their lot. I have the money but this was on principle. Drove it out then pulled over and installed new batteries I bought for $225. The original 1 year old batteries were so burned up you could nearly stand the smell. I am a retired Service Manager of 23 years. I have never seen anything like this before. Now I am learning this is common treatment by Camping World! Never again.

Wow, Well done my friend. It just so happens that my wife and I are getting ready to do the whole "retire and go RV'ing" thing and we are ready to buy a TT. I'm still going to give CW of Concord, NC a whirl. They seem to have comparable prices to yours but if what you say is true and they ramp up the price with hidden fees I'll walk but I'll make sure I take up all of their day doing it. I've got plenty of time LOL. I'm one of those who can spot BS a mile away and love to watch the tactics used by shady salesmen and call them out on it. On the other hand, maybe the Concord store is the exception and they'll be a straight dealer. We'll see. I'd love to buy from you because you seem like a straight up guy but you're pretty far away. Then again, I love to drive so who knows :)

During our research we became aware of a Midwestern Camping World store which did not employ the full range of Camping World tactics detailed in’ The Truth’. At that store the management team was held over from the founding owners. Lamentably Camping World removed that management last fall.
Many former CW employees are valued members of our crew and without exception they tell me they left CW because the orders they received from on high troubled them.
      Thank you and Good Luck.

Great video. In researching RV’s the last 8 months there are a lot of “camping worlds” out there. They may be bigger and well organized in their tactics but in my opinion there are several RV dealerships that have dirty hands in these tactics. I have thankfully found a handful of dealers that seem to be honest that we will buy from. Unfortunately for me we will most likely buy out of state.

Yeah I always read the fine print, Sometimes I get asked to leave because I "wouldn't be a good customer " another slang for "not easy to fleese". I always check out an unknown dealership by going in with one of my old pickups and dressed like a blue collar worker to see how they would treat me. It's really funny when they brush you off only later to find that I don't have to ask any permission to buy anything! I probably own the house they are renting!
