The Story of Sal Guinta & Battle Company in Afghanistan | Operation Rock Avalanche

- This week (October 19-25, 2007) marks the anniversary of Operation Rock Avalanche, which was a six-day offensive in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan led by 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
The events of those days forever changed the lives of those involved and many others, resulting in the loss of three incredible Paratroopers (SSG Larry Rougle, SPC Hugo Mendoza, SGT Joshua Brennan), as well as at least 7 WIA. Following the events, SSG Sal Guinta was awarded the Medal of Honor exactly three years later, making him the first living recipient of the Medal since the Vietnam War.
This video details SSG Guinta's story and experience during the operation, as well as the events leading up to him receiving the Medal of Honor. There are many interviews detailing this, all worth watching in my opinion. Also, check out the films, "Restrepo" and "Korengal" for an even deeper look into Operation Rock Avalanche and the 173rd's deployment to the Korengal.

30 year veteran here medical puke I was in Logar province in 2009-2010 with the 173rd. Great soldiers I just hate the fact that so many died and were wounded for nothing. Freedom isn't free and we cannot conceive of peoples who would rather have a boot on their neck than democracy and freedom.

These guys are real American hero’s. Having fought the same enemy in this terrain 4 years later. I can tell you it’s no joke. Those mountains in the Kunar. The enemy knowledge of the terrain is something that really makes a difference in war. Thanks to men like these we all get to enjoy the freedom we have here in America. Medal of honor are earned trought tragedy. Rarely they have been earned without some of your buddy getting killed in action . Even with all the "prestige" for lack of a better term surrounding its awarding It must be a hard decoration to receive
Tim Hetherington who filmed Restrepo and Korengal was killed in 2011 at Misrata, Libya. Remembering, these journalist bring these stories to viewer risking their lives everyday.

How was it possible this guy wasn’t mentioned or seen once in Korengal or Restrepo? Insane that they were all together
Agreed a MOH recipient and no mention at all? are you kidding me? this would’ve been one of the most significant parts of the film and it would’ve portrayed just how depraved these animals are they weren’t taking that soldier to give him a proper burial I assure you. Perhaps they were worried about the blowback of the decision and what they really had to gain or maybe it’s because the US military typically doesn’t like to advertise its losses. Definitely like to know for sure though.
Different platoons. They were at op Restrepo while Giunta was at either fire base Vegas or phoenix. When the Restrepo film came out Giunta hadn’t been awarded the MOH yet. It takes years for the process to be able to award the MOH. There was also another 2 Medal of Honor recipients from this unit from this deployment. They were in Chosen company SGT White, and SSG Pitts.
I remember this “mission” I was in chosen company.

If your bosses could do it over again, would they put more troops in Korengal Valley? Seems like only 15-20 of US troops.
Men like this are the ones who make me proud to be an American what a bad ass fearless in the face of death and going after a teammate who was fallen and had no obligation to do alone a lot of other men would’ve made a different choice. Thank you for your service and for stopping those animals from desecrating one of our own
Shitshows without purpose
Don't think I've ever heard a MOH recipient say anything other than they don't deserve it and all of their buddies would have done the same thing. Serious team players and lovers of their buddies burdened with a reminder of their very worst day. I do not envy, but I do applaud and understand their willingness to engage without a thought of their own safety. I'm a former deputy sheriff, and I've seen things I wish that I'd never seen. The adrenaline dump that's so powerful that you could lift an elephant. Nothing like this, though.
