Matt Phillips was a great guy when I knew him. We spent a couple years together in Georgia hanging out and having fun before I left for the Air Force. He once hitchhiked all the way across the country to visit me in California a few years later before he went into the army. It’s so sad to see him here on one of his last days. He will always be in my heart, and I will always miss him!
I served in 1RAR, my unit served with the 173rd in Vietnam, we share battle honours, the sky soldiers are a proud bunch. I remember hearing about this happening at the time. These guys went through hell at Bella and lost a lot of men because they were put into a horrible strategic position that is almost impossible to defend. RIP brothers!
It's sad. It's usually the French hanging out their legionaires in desperate unsupported positions. Thought U.S. tactical doctrine advanced beyond this squandering of human resources. The time training pipeline alone should encourage tactical decisions that minimize loss of our lives. Not so easy to replace.
what an unbelievable sad but heroic story and amazing and well done documentary. how this isnt one of the most famous docs out there is a travesty and a shame... it puts life into such perspective and no matter what is going on in life it could always be worse and you could always do more to help vets and all others despite the excuses that may stand in the way. I believe those in command did not learn for the mistakes made at COP Bella and made them again with COP Keating the following year, the two posts were very similar in terrain & situation, both ending with the same unnecessary outcome.
Command also wasn't held accountable for criminal negligence at a time when the US Army would prosecute enlisted personnel and members of the junior officer corps at the drop of a hat. There are plenty of examples of that sitting in Leavenworth right now. Sure seems like the Army will spare no expense when railroading sergeants and lieutenants. But prosecute a colonel or general for leaving these guys sitting in 120 degree heat without enough water, or the proper equipment and manpower while hundreds of Taliban mass nearby? It's insane that all of these guys knew they were going to be attacked, but Col Ostlund gets away with pretending not to know, and is found not responsible when it ends up happening exactly as they described!
Many sons and grandsons will still die in these wars for power. May God have mercy on their souls, and punish those responsible for these atrocities. God bless our soldiers.
They have a choice now. They don’t have to be slaves to the powers that be. In fact, it’s fair to say them volunteering makes them mercenaries for the enemy. If you see the state and the bureaucrats and politicians and journalists as enemies, that is.
Big love and respect and gratitude to all who served but this should never happen again and the Army should be ashamed and embarrassed for not caring more for their soldiers
Thank you for this video. It's a shame they re-assigned that drone for some visiting Admiral that day. I'd hope or like to think it would have made a difference.
My heart hurts for these guys, but at least there are people who will never forget them and will always honor and appreciate the sacrifices they made in order to protect our freedom. It's so sad that it happened this way though, it reminds me completely of COP Keating and both of those places were described as "like being at the bottom of a paper cup", surrounded by high ground and in both situations they never should've been put there in the first place. Regardless though, their sacrifice and their stories will never be forgotten and they were true heroes in every sense of the word. My heart and prayers go out to those who lost their lives and their families.

I don't understand why they had to be in that area when all these soldiers commented how they were going to die and that they were going to be surrounded and bombarded with rpgs etc and yet they seemed to feel they had no choice so they were going to do what they could to survive a unwinnable death box. Wicked people knowingly ordered the chosen few to go to an unsafe, unprotected area to meet a horrible death and wounded soldiers with out any chance of victory or success. It was cold, cruel and criminal. Whoever made the decision and orders should be investigated. This should have never happened. These soldiers could have lived! 😢😢😢 What was gained in Afghanistan by the death of so many soldiers and in Irag?

RIP for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. May god be with their families May god be with the brave soldiers that were wounded and the soldiers that were there. 🫡
Why would they go thru with sending them in there..why would they have a base set up surrounded by enemy high ground..why would they send them with 2 weeks left in their deployment. They got hung out to dry. But maybe im wrong just makes me very sad to see. Theres no words great enough to express my gratitude for all these brave warriors. These men are true heros in life. God bless America and god bless our fallen soldiers and vets. True heros. 🙏
I think it was the ego of the brass. Taliban gave that company and our soldiers an ultimatum to not be there. Some suit said, "oh yeah, no one tells me where I can or can't go". Not trying to clown, but I don't understand why they were there, makes no sense at ALL. They said f*** it, and held their ground against hundreds. Amazing. What is the most frustrating about this was their logistics. 100° weather and no water? Heck no. Never should our soldiers, with a working LZ, be without water, food and ammo.
This makes me angry that some genius decided to have a FOB in the worst possible location. I pray for the heroes who didn't make it back and those who did.
My thoughts, prayers, and blessings out to all the warriors that held that piece of dirt! I can not for the life of me understand why a post had to be put in that valley... It's literally a kill box. Let's say there was no other way, it absolutely had to be there and nowhere else... Ok cool, it should have been a hardened solid concrete bunker... Something mortar and RPG proof at least. It wouldn't have been overly hard to helo in sections of reenforced concrete and assemble something. Sandbags and plywood? That's just wrong. I really hope that many Generals had to answer for that. I do not blame a single enlisted man or any Lieutenant or Captain there... This was a total and complete massive huge failure at the highest levels of command, strategically and defendable.
It's hard to imagine the stupidity and insensitivity involved at the senior command level, that it took to put these brave men, who've been in regular contact for months, and right when they're about to go home, sticking them in the place where they're most likely to be attacked. Oh yeah, and without any drone cover, or even enough provisions. I'm disgusted. It wasn't just they who were dangled out there like bait, it was everyone who loved them and was looking forward to seeing them shortly. Appalling lack of recognition of their service to that point.
My ? Ìs WHY DID THE SEALS RETREAT WITHOUT HIM.WHY WAS HE LEFT? NO MAN LEFT BEHIND.PERIOD.WAS IT BECAUSE HE Was usaf and not a seal.that really bothers me.big picture......MR CHAMPMAN GOD SPEED.YOU ARE TRUE WARRIOR AND PUT YOUR LIFE TO END FOR OTHERS.DAMN IT IF ONLY ALL OF US HAD BALLS LIKE YOU....THANK YOU. ILL NEVER FORGET YOUR STORY.
Very interesting that the "investigation" resulted in finding the platoon commander, 1st Lt Brostrom, at fault. Yeah ok, let's blame the one very junior officer who can't defend himself because he was killed in the battle. Such typical Army nonsense. Whatever happened to the guy at the top doing the honorable thing and taking responsibility?
So, put up there didn't have enough supplies, as in food and water initially. Since I heard diggers in the background, why wasn't a concrete bastion enplaced? What was the strategic aim of this whole endeavour? A waste of young and talented lives. RIP.
At 42:24 the CSI made the LT. A scapegoat of the deaths of his troopers, only because the upper echelon was about to retire and charges of dereliction of duty would ruin there retirement that is how i see it, brass taking care of brass, and who care about a dead hero. I call that BS
When they send fish to a barrel then blame the fish for being in a barrel, two weeks should have been spent getting ready to go state side not building a base beside 200 fighting tali
Then why not gob back to being a mercenary for a treasonous state so you can continue shitting on your own people. Thanks for all the extra Muslims who followed you home. Really awesome.
Considering Dien Bien Phu involved the French and not Americans in the 50s followed by the LIE that LBJ (THE DEMOCRAT POTUS WHO IS THE MOST CORRUPT POTUS IN AMERICAN HISTORY) used to send young Americans to fight and die in South East Asia...that battle was not considered by ANYONE other then at the time, Col Hal Moore who led the 7th Air Cav into the 1st direct engagement vs the NVA at the Battle of the IA Drang Valley... He studied that specific battle in depth.... While this is tragic, obviously the US Military didn't learn anything from any battle using a guerilla force or tactics ...they use the same tactics as they did since WWII...and that is why beyond lucking out with air superiority and able to destroy majority of Iraqi Republican Guard and regular soldiers due to there being 1 single road (The Highway of Death)...but besides that...American politicians and the Generals running the wars are too political...During WWII America and the UK, etc did whatever had to be done to win the war...D-Day, the Citizens along the Normandy Coast and the Peninsula...more than 17,000 French Citizens were killed during the bombardments prior to the Beach landings....America leveled cities...obviously not intending to kill civilians except for the times during WWII when bombing the "workers" to the military plants was easier than the a precision strike when only had "dumb bombs"...Countries could do that during WWII and prior because all the American Citizen saw and or read was censored and filtered through the War Department...the media was pro-American and Americans were...well...AMERICANS....Vietnam and later the battles show up on nightly news and now in real time....I'm too old to be a politician now but if I were ever President and I sent our young people into war.... I would place their safety and well being above civilans...especially civilans who chant Death to America.... and I would demand and command we flattened the country if that is what it takes to eliminate the threat...give the civilans a warning as America did the Japanese in WWII and as Israel has done many times with the Islamic Terrorist occupying their home land not the other way around....(Islam didn't exist until ~400 years AFTER JESUS OF NAZARETH aka Jesus Christ)....and lastly, let us not forget WANAT and the COP was just one fish bowl COP...another infamous COP battle, the Battle of Outpost Keating.... and then we have the arrogance of SOCOM who forced Marines (I realize MARSOC is same Spec op Teir) to take a back seat to a smaller SEAL RECON TEAM THAT WAS NOT TRAINED TO BE RECON...and was the first deployment for 3 of the 4...and that ended with initially 3 of the 4 SEALS being KIA but resulted in the "QRF" Chinook not waiting on the Apaches for escort and was blown out of the sky...killing a Chinook filled with Spec Op guys...So, your premise is correct, no...they have not learned...this past week was the "Black Hawk Down" Anniversary...and that is another situation... America has fallen along way since the days of the GREATEST GENERATION...
Thank you, men, for the sacrifice you made for America. This was a lost call, and really, we had no damn business in this war, but the brave soldiers were honorable and did exactly what they were asked to do. Then Biden - Harris is so stupid they had 13 soldiers KIA during a fucked up extraction at the airport with many other severely injured. Pray for all of them and their families.
This is just my point of view, these men these young men left their homes and their families and flew half way around the world because of the conflict our wonderful politicians got us into in Iraq and Afghanistan? it's these type of videos that make you storming mad as hell when you think about people like Kamala Harris or Tim tampon Tim or Obama or just any of the damn negative Democrats and if it's some negative Republicans so be it throw them in there with them. But what is heartbreaking these young men gave their lives up for the United States and the government just s**** on them. Most of them had to fight for medical treatment when they got home most of them had huge huge huge both psychological and a lot of physical injuries to overcome and hell no these people didn't get paid enough how can you put a price on the loss their families suffered. These are some of the bravest of the bravest. Thank them and God bless their families for the price they paid for freedom in this country . If you see a veteran walk up and shake their hand and find them, it makes their day you don't even have a clue.
It’s a double edged sword. They voluntarily joined to fight, they don’t think about losing. It’s not a movie or game. I’m grateful I skipped the conventional infantry, I read enough Vietnam books and learned how the conventional guys are used. It sucks, but it’s war and it’s what we asked for.

Maybe you should have picked a different name other than "chosen few". That name has already been taken by the Marines that fought their way out the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea in 1950 outnumbered 10 to 1. You're not allowed to steal valor.
I appreciate what you're trying to do/say, I didn't choose the name, however. It's also not limited to only those great men and their actions. Chosen Co. decided that name for themselves and earned it in their own way, no one is stealing any valor. A simple search online will give you any details you want as to the explanation behind it. My utmost respect to the original Chosin Few of the Chosin Reservoir, as well as the Chosen Few at Wanat.
First off, you are speaking of the Chosin Few, named after the reservoir they fought in. Not the Chosen Few, so the names do differ. Secondly, Army and Marine Infantry fought side by side in the Chosin reservoir. RCT-31 “Task Force Faith” and their casualties seriously hindered the Chinese rolling attack on the 15,000 Marines fighting on the west bank. Of the roughly 2,500 Army Soldiers on that east bank, only 42% were able to tactically regress to Marine positions and only 15% were deemed combat capable, aka not significantly wounded. Combat so chaotic and close quarter that Marine pilots were forced to drop napalm on Army soldiers just to keep their convoy moving. Considering the significantly larger Marine presence in the area at the time, the Army had a much higher casualty rate for battle casualties. Considering 60% of the Army personnel that fought there never left their posts. (Battle casualties do not include cold weather injuries suffered by Marines over the course of the frigid battle.) 10 Marines, 2 Soldiers and 1 Naval Pilot earned the Medal of Honor between 27NOV-13DEC. Third, claiming stolen valor could be the most short bus take you could have for a distinguished unit of paratroopers. Get a grip on your life and off your third pinky finger.
I know something you should without question do and take this absolute dumbass comment down. Chosen company is after C for Charlie. In the army you have Companies and usually those companies will be Alpha Company, B for Bravo Company, or C for Charlie company. These are the normal old school monickers to generally label companies of soldiers. Many of the infantry units will designate their own name for the letter repping their company. They called themselves Chosen Company before this even happened
@@Specter502 Very well said, ignore that moron. They obviously don't even know the difference between "chosen" and "chosin" & they most certainly have no idea what stolen valor even is. You did a wonderful job on this video and you've brought these amazing men the recognition they deserve. They were truly the best and absolute heroes, and they earned their title of The Chosen Few!

CPL Gunnar Zwilling was my cousin
Appreciate you sharing, always wishing the best to you and the family 🙏
Thank you for thinking of my family
Sorry for ur loss .I'm pissed off they put them in that position to begin with...(giving the enemy the high ground 360° around them) It's BULLSHIT
The US military obviously disregarded this fundamental strategic advantage:“He who occupies the high ground…will fight to advantage.” Sun Tzu,
most people dont even know that we have infantry units that are kind of elite without being elite.
11 days and a wake-up, your never short until you can eat here and shit there. Sad fact.
Why have a vase in a valley when they can attack from the mountains above?
Amen brothers. Amen
14 Years ago today
Never forgotten
Thank you. Chris I worked with Dan for a year or two. My niece was with 174
May God bless you all
So, put up there didn't have enough supplies, as in food and water initially. Since I heard diggers in the background, why wasn't a concrete bastion enplaced? What was the strategic aim of this whole endeavour? A waste of young and talented lives. RIP.
The aim was to eventually establish a mass emigration system so the population could move to America and Europe. Great success.
RIP brothers
He got a phone call to tell him about his son KIA?? I hope not!
27:06 oh so they were just bait to show we were still hard charging out there, let the elders know we still helping?
They’re just slaves for the state at the end of the day. They had a greater purpose and they served it. Like good slaves.
At 42:24 the CSI made the LT. A scapegoat of the deaths of his troopers, only because the upper echelon was about to retire and charges of dereliction of duty would ruin there retirement that is how i see it, brass taking care of brass, and who care about a dead hero. I call that BS
Salute
Best men on earth!

32:49 FACTS!!
When they send fish to a barrel then blame the fish for being in a barrel, two weeks should have been spent getting ready to go state side not building a base beside 200 fighting tali
I want to be in the Random Many Company.
Damn do i miss being deployed... 😂😂
U think u create bonds while in garrison...
No sir.. down range u really develop a bond
Then why not gob back to being a mercenary for a treasonous state so you can continue shitting on your own people. Thanks for all the extra Muslims who followed you home. Really awesome.

Did American commanders learn nothing from Dien Bien Phu ?
The millions of afghans and Pakistanis flooding into America certainly appreciate it. Lmao
After 20 years these slaves still signed up. There’s no helping some people.
Fighting fires with fires were there enemies and they are ours enemies rpg RPG RPG RPG

Your freedoms are being imperilled by the immigration of Muslims. The same people these slaves were “helping”.
Thank you, Sean. I absolutely love what you said and how you feel. Your respect to the boys is palpable and very meaningful. This is from a mom to a son whose fellow brothers died that day. This horrible day still wreaks havoc with the ones left.
I thank you and offer my deepest respect to you.
Sad 😢
Damn the politicians…
You keep volunteering to be their slaves though.
@@GB-mu9ue do I? That’s funny…. I bet I don’t
did the Army ever give a reason for this FOB location? just a waste of life
Bait, they have done this since Korea.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And all for what? Just waste of life
👍👍
Black and white kills this.
criminal commanders
The fuck would having a different name have done. I thought the fuck bags blaming the lt that died were dumb but your right up there with them.
What was it all for?
This is why castles are built on the top of mountains not in valleys.
Wow these guys are wide open . So sad
