@@masterfarmswill they available to buy online? I'm fed up with the shocking quality of "Jersey Royals" sold in English supermarkets for the last 5 years☹️
Very Interesting thank you for posting, we used to holiday in Jersey regularly when the Kids were young, and I have seen the small fields / Slopes used for early crop production, however it is nice to see how you work & plant the steep slopes.
Great video I know how you farmers and workers work hard I’m sorry that I don’t like Jersey potatoes but my wife used to love them, thank you for your videos.
My wife and I holidayed in Jersey in July and I'm nearly sure I recognise the field. I reckoned it was very steep for potato s, but I had heard that winches were used and the potatoes were very valuable, that why every possible place was used even tho it was very steep Thanks for the education
In Herefordshire we call your banker/ridger a boulter. Thankyou for sharing your work, this is an extremely interesting documentation of potatoe planting the Jersey way. Lovely to see just how much stamina dad still has. Have a good 2025.
Thanks for watching. Glad you’ve found it interesting to watch. Haha he will be glad to hear you say that! My Uncles usually involved too but he’s got a hernia so stuck in the tractor cab this year! All the best to you in 2025 too.
Thanks for your hard work. I flipping love jersey royals. With that horse harrow can you not put weights on it. I'm sure you and your dad done all sorts. Love channel ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for a very interesting video. I wondered what you might do with that piece of ground after the potatoes are harvested. Will you plant another crop?
These haven’t had seaweed on for a long time. Seaweed is predominantly used in the west of the island in the lighter sandier soils to increase soil organic matter. On the heavier soil it leaves the soil too wet for us to work. We’d argue these taste just as good !
I had a girlfriend who lived just round the corner from this field! I always loved the ‘toy town’ patchwork of Jersey’s little fields but never appreciated the hard work that they entailed. I’m guessing you’re still using Portuguese labour on Jersey?
No these early fields have potatoes year after year. The tunnels in the other video are organic all they have is another crop or cover crop and plenty of muck!
Hope you don't mind the question but are you the same family that appeared in the TV programme mud sweat and tractors? Or is it just a coincidence that you have the same surname. Remember watching it years ago. Didn't realise how steep those fields are. Great video. All the best 🇬🇧.
Thanks it’s a common question I’ll talk more about it in Wednesdays video. But amazingly no! I think because the soil never has big tractors or machines driving over it there is little to no compaction which helps massively with run off. The potatoes are also only in the ground for around 12/13 weeks. So for 3/4 of the year the fields are in a cover crop.
How often go you grow potatoes on those steep fields? How many steep fields like that do you have? What do you grow on those fields in other years? Looked very hard work using the ridger couldn't you make one that was heavier, had 4 depth adjustable neumatic tyres so your dad didn't have to put himself through that ordeal
I’ve planted spuds here in England, but that was on flat(ish) land and all mechanise but not this early in the year. Watching that them plant on the hill side is like going back to the beginning of the 20th century and ploughing with a pair of plough engines. I hope you get good money for those lovely tasty spuds.
Hello, I bought a load of Jersey royals in July from Morissons supermarket. Hung them in the Garage in net bags to chit and they all rotted. Is there a trick to regrow them from the supermarket?
Yes we do that as well these ones are just a bit too steep for that. Monday and Tuesday we will be planting fields like that I’ll post that up in Wednesdays video.
Yes these early ones we grow the same field year after year. They are in the ground for a short period of time only around 12 weeks and we find they act nearly as a trap crop.

Massive admiration for these guys. Good example of much farming and agricultural is not valued enough.
Thanks very much, lucky to have a great team to get the job the done 👍
I had no idea of the work involved, thank you
Will always pay the price asked for Jersey potatoes, worth every penny and always limited to their true season. Magic!
Thank you very much, it’s only a small area of the very first early ones grown on these slopes. Gradually we move onto the flatter fields.
I never realised people still used such a labour intensive process. Thanks.
Great video, if anyone grumbles about the price of jersey royals they should see what goes into growing them.
Thanks very much 👍

Great to see using all the ground available to you. Good video, keep up the good work! 👌👌
Thanks very much, there’s quite a few of the early slopes not grown on any more but the ones with nice soil and favourable locations are still used.
This is why Jersey Royals are the best spuds you will ever get ... 💯
That's hard work 😮
Thanks 👍

Ah great you use to come over. Glad you’ve found the video interesting. Keep tuned for updates !
Great stuff we love Jersey spuds tells me summer is not far away
Great to hear 😀
Great video I know how you farmers and workers work hard I’m sorry that I don’t like Jersey potatoes but my wife used to love them, thank you for your videos.
No problem, maybe try some again this year to see if they’ve changed ! Try M and S they are usually ours.

Hope you get good price for your crop, you deserve it for all that had work.
Thanks very much, keep watching and fingers crossed when we harvest I can let you know !
A very informative and interesting video a lot of hard work in that thank you for posting
Thanks for that and glad you found it interesting.
Have a good new year all you.and your crops.so keep smiling youg man and keep up the good work.
All strong people 💪
Cheers 👍
That looks hard work, but satisfying once done I bet 👏🏼
Yes, the satisfying bit is when you come to harvest! It’s always a bit risky planting this early, some years it doesn’t pay off.

Thanks very much for watching all the best to you too 👍
Thanks. Happy New Year to you all.
great video all the best for 2025
Thank you, all the best to you too !
Brilliant video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Ideal land for grape vines.
Haha maybe one day if the spuds don’t pay any more!
Very close sowing distance!!!
Yes! Aiming for fresh loose skin salad potaotes so we want high numbers and small size. By planting close this helps produce this.
Thanks for your hard work. I flipping love jersey royals. With that horse harrow can you not put weights on it. I'm sure you and your dad done all sorts. Love channel ❤❤❤❤
Thanks very much, yes we could but we have to get the Harrow back down each time so it’s as quick just jumping on and riding up yourself !
Thanks for a very interesting video. I wondered what you might do with that piece of ground after the potatoes are harvested. Will you plant another crop?
The one in the orange hi viz looked very tired 😀😀
Have to get you on there !
Very labour intensive, isn't 10 inches the correct gap between the spuds?
Hi, does Albert Bartlett pack the potatoes . had a tour around packing plant when on holiday a few years ago. It was a very enjoyable holiday
We’d always grown for Jersey Royal company but now Albert Bartlett have bought them out we will all be growing for him 👍
How many years ago did those Cotils last have seaweed on them? That’s what provides the flavor.
These haven’t had seaweed on for a long time. Seaweed is predominantly used in the west of the island in the lighter sandier soils to increase soil organic matter. On the heavier soil it leaves the soil too wet for us to work. We’d argue these taste just as good !
Great video,
Where do u get the labour to help,
I had a girlfriend who lived just round the corner from this field! I always loved the ‘toy town’ patchwork of Jersey’s little fields but never appreciated the hard work that they entailed. I’m guessing you’re still using Portuguese labour on Jersey?
Thanks! We have a mixture of locals, English, Polish and Philippinos who work on the farm now.
No over weight people in this video! 😁
😂
👍👍👍.
Are they grown on a 1 in 3 or 4 year rotation? Do you need to sterilize the soil in the tunnels after cropping prior to replanting?
No these early fields have potatoes year after year. The tunnels in the other video are organic all they have is another crop or cover crop and plenty of muck!

Yes that’s us, that was my Grandfather and Uncle who appeared on the programme, glad you enjoy the channel.
Excellent, any concerns about erosion?

What does the seed rate work out at in tons per acre?
Thanks it’s around 3.3 tonne bins an acre. Hard to say exactly as all of these early ones are planted in boxes.
I think the best job there would be sitting in the tractor but great work.
Haha, everyone’s earned their right to sit in the tractor seat. We’re lucky everyone mucks in to help.

Is water erosion a problem on such steep slopes?
I guess you always work the ground up hill to stop the soil walk down ?
Yes that’s the idea, in certain fields we now have too much ground at the top !
Hello, I bought a load of Jersey royals in July from Morissons supermarket. Hung them in the Garage in net bags to chit and they all rotted. Is there a trick to regrow them from the supermarket?
Where on the mainland are the first early ones available?
West Cornwall
Thanks
Yes tends to be down south and London wholesalers.
Coul you not use Your track tractor with. Winch on front ?
Yes we do that as well these ones are just a bit too steep for that. Monday and Tuesday we will be planting fields like that I’ll post that up in Wednesdays video.
What about glowing daffs and artichokes
We’ve never grown artichokes but we have a very small area of Daffs on the flatter fields just to supply the local market.
Artichokes cash crop.try growing them.easy to grow like potato and flowers tips also for local restaurants. All best.penny stefan from sherwood notts
What fertiliser do you use?
Yara Mila sulphur cut
Ever ridge down the hill 🤔
Does anyone cultivate/plant using Ransomes MG crawlers anymore?
When you realise your childhood of picking tatties wasn't that bad 😂
Quit a wage bill for that small patch ?
What's grown on the ground in between potatoes, you can't grow spuds every year on the same ground .
Yes these early ones we grow the same field year after year. They are in the ground for a short period of time only around 12 weeks and we find they act nearly as a trap crop.
Its really good seeing you planting like that how often can the Cotils be used between potatoes ?
Between each crop a cover crop is sown. Usually comprises of a cereal or grass plus phacelia or a mustard.
@@masterfarms then potatoes again so every other year
