Nice👍 Hi, I came here from the link you sent me on Reddit. Pretty cool. I'm learning Buddhism as an American, after being Hindu for more than 8 years and currently Agnostic, and this course is really helping me. So if you could make newer videos to teach me more about Buddhism, Inwould appreciate that.

Hi, thank you for the great video about Buddha. We watched this video in Washington State for our class. But I strongly disagree about the birthplace of the lord Buddha. Buddha was born in Lumbini which is entirely located in Nepal. So, I would like to request you to correct the misinfo. Thank you☺️

Thanks for watching! I encourage you to please listen to that portion again. I said the "region of..." because most people may not know where the modern-day country of Nepal is (or Lumbini). Giving a geographical/regional context to understand the location of something is very common for many topics. Also, at the time of his birth, Nepal was not the country we have today.

First a question: Do you break the cycle of birth if you reach Nirvana?
Then a thought: The dukkha and cycle of birth make me think of the constant self-destructive behaviour humans have. Even more so if you think of the cycle of birth as a repetition of action and thoughts caused by dukkha. Is that a teaching that would come at some point?
Maybe I should continue enriching myself by reading more about the subject and my questions would get answered at some point. But I do not have the patience ( I know I'm stuck .. for now).
Anyway, if your true self is only reached by Nirvana, is that our natural state ( we would be born that way)?
Is Boudhisme evolving as a religion? Or is it, and I really don't mean to be disrespectful, lead by the thought that the teachings a few millenials ago should be the same as today?
Honestly, every question lead to another one.. I'm going to stop though.
I've met people who do not like to question their philosophy or religion, I just hope this community is not like that.
Anyway, thank you for this introduction and great video.
    Cheers
    Q.

Sorry for the late reply! Yes, when you reside in your natural state, which is Nirvana, you are also an enlightened being. They do not generate any Karma, and thus break the cycle of rebirth. In Theravada, this is the goal (via Arhat), and in Mahayana it's a bit more complicated. While the Arhat is recognized, there is the Bodhisattva path which means they are taking the 'long road' (so to speak). Bodhisattva's can be unenlightened (such as laypersons on the path), or enlightened. Enlightened Bodhisattva's voluntarily remain in the cycle of rebirth due to their deep vow of wanting to help save all sentient beings. Without making this a long reply - yes, if you are living in Nirvana, then you are not generating Karma and can 'escape' the cycle of rebirth (Samsara). However, Mahayanists follow the Bodhisattva path (which was modeled after the Buddha's prior lives as a Bodhisattva) and any enlightened Bodhisattva remains in Samsara even though they could escape it, if they wanted to.

Can you be a Christian Buddha?

    • @AlanPeto
      @AlanPeto  4 года назад +4

There are many Christians and Jews who are also Buddhist, however this is a personal decision. If interested, some good books to read on the subject are "Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian" (amzn.to/37itkcs), :Living Buddha Living Christ" (amzn.to/2upqVOC), and "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers" (amzn.to/2RiWdQb). Although I do not have a dedicated article or video on this subject, you can view my "Christmas and Buddhism" articles here: alanpeto.com/tag/christmas/ and video here: ruclips.net/video/ohwS3r6a3rE/видео.html&feature=emb_title

I believe it's the way Christianity was supposed to be give or take a few details. I've realized I can't connect with God unless I slow down & meditate. Even the bible has quotes like, "Be still & know I am God." I don't believe Christianity was supposed to be what is today. Way too much focus on Hell & sin & not enough of just finding peace & knowing God right now in this life. Maybe we do "recycle" until we've reached enlightenment then we go on to our afterlife? It's possible. No one has all the answers. I think Buddah shows us all how to connect with the Divine energy we carry inside ourselves, & I mean whatever you belive!
I belive Jesus taught much the same things too. He was a teacher & I believe he meditated a lot. He basically taught, love everyone, don't judge others, help others, don't focus on physical attachments "greed & envy". To me it's basically the same things just worded differently. I think man has twisted the Bible so much that unfortunately a lot of those teachings are lost.
Many look at me like I've lost my mind when I give my explanation, but I don't expect anyone else to drop their beliefs for mine, this is just mine. It's what's inside my heart. Good luck with your search! I hope you find what's in your heart too.
      Namaste ❤🧘‍♀️🙏💚🕉

Thanks for your feedback. At the time of the Buddha's birth, Nepal was not a country. His current birthplace is indeed located in the modern day country of Nepal. His birthplace, and that region was, in 324-185 BCE, part of the Maurya Empire (who's capital was in what would now be modern day India).
