You set a great example for future hikers to not risk river crossings that are not safe. I lost count how many rescues we did because of twisted ankles from slipping on the rocks while crossing rivers and streams. Keep up the great work, you are truly a child of the mountains,

Stella, have you watched Appalachian Adventurista's videos? In week 6 Specifically Week 6 where she talks about how she's learned to manage the lows that can be associated with having spent time with family and friends and getting back on trail. She is wise beyond her years, a conservationist and a mine of info about wildlife, fauna and flora on on the trail..

Wonder how the new pack handles rain. Tough to cover a pack with a Therm-a-Rest z lite on top. She could try cutting some folds on the pad and use cinch cord to carry the pad the vertically on her backpack, the way Coyote does.

I cannot wrap my mind around doing 26 miles a day carrying a heavy pack. I hike 5 miles a day comfortably willl be bumping it up 10 miles a day come June. I have so much respect for thru hikers. This is where I get my inspiration from. I will never thru hike, the food would destroy me but I can push my daily goals a bit. Keep going Stella 🌻👣

You just eventually get used to it. That was one of my favorite parts of hiking the AT. Learning just how strong and resilient our body can be. Most people start the trail only going 8-12 miles a day with a lot of rest, zero days, and complaining haha. Then, before you know it you are doing 16 a day with no zeros and only a little rest. After that, you can just start turning it up! That when you officially have your “trail legs” as they call them.
Also, one of the major factors in me being able to get big miles were keeping up with my new trail family. Some were fast and some were a little slower but we all ended up in the same camp end of day. Man.. best time of my life.

She has no body fat which is what kills most people. Her pack is pretty light because she’s skilled at timing water and food resupplies. And she’s in great shape. That said, still very impressive what she can do on a consistent basis and with a great attitude.

You might want to consider hiking the International AT after you reach Katahdin. The shelters are new and don't get used much. But there are a few caveats. The section that crosses over Lunksoos Mountain has not been cleared out very well. Trail construction is still in progress there. Also, near Bowlin Camps there is a bridge over Big Spring Brook that has carpeting that covers the holes in the bridge deck. Might be best to watch your step there. Wassataquoik Stream will be a challenging ford. Make sure you bring a hiking pole and avoid the very slippery rocks. Also If the water level is too high to ford, do not take the marked and unmaintained detour trail because it leads to a bridge over the Wassataquoik Stream that has beams that are so rotted that plants are growing in the middle of the bridge. Just sayin'

Try stuffing your boots with newspaper overnight when your shoes are wet. The paper will wick the water from the boots and your boots will dry much faster.

Rain is pretty much a given in the east as there’s no dry season or monsoon. Every month averages between 3.5” and 4.5” of precipitation. Of course there are always exceptions mainly from tropical storm activity. The stream crossings can be dangerous. Keep on killing it and you’ll weather the storm all the way to Katahdin.

Don't let the highs get too high nor the lows get too low - try to keep a balance. Maybe the repeated Buddhist mantra, 'Om Mani Padme Hum,' may help with the balance. Be well, stay safe. One foot in front of the other.

I can't think of any of those "iconic" landmarks that most states have, The only AT hiking I've ever done north of PA was along the Housatonic River, pretty to be sure but you don't really run into anything until Mt Greylock in Mass lets you now things are going uphill again.

Stupid question: Is there a covered place outside a shelter where y'all can do stuff like cook (or sort out your pack, etc), or do you hafta cook and everything else inside? I'd be anxious about waking people up, and trying to be quiet often makes me louder somehow! How much space between you and others? Dimensions inside shelters? Thx!
