Thanks for all the informative and entertaining videos. I use SPAN to see the average tonality of a song in stereo and mid/side mode like you. And I use Decibel by Process Audio for VU and digital meters for stereo and mid/side monitoring. As well as for frequency analyzing and resonant detection. I also use Decibel for viewing an individual instrument or groups placement in the stereo field as well as to see how frequencies move within the stereo field for individual instrumets and the song as a whole. Decibel does all this with no noticeable CPU useage. Cheers

Quite early into the video, I realised I had never been using it to its full potential.
Thanks, Chris. Those settings do make a difference... AND I didn't realise you could do mid/side analysis on it!

I like the way you explain. Always straight to the point and efficient. And very intelligible even for a none native english speaker.
Also I appreciate a lot that Voxengo offers a simple installer without plugin management module. That's nice.

Great video! Can you please show us how you would deal with sibilance using SPAN and/or TDR Prism? Then use an EQ or a de-esser to deal with the problem.

Oh Chris, I have Span since two centuries, I think, but some of the functions I had never used and didn’t know the listen feature at all!
There is another plug-in from Voxengo, I can’t remember the name at the moment, with which you can have a bar graph for the spectrum.

I love Span, like you, I have been using it for years. Voxengo is smart for offering this for free because it got me to look at and buy a couple of their other plugins. Chris one question; I saw somewhere a while back that it's best to adjust the tilt, I forget by how much but the low end would show up higher than the high end because of the way we hear frequencies. Is that not true or necessary?

  • @Mitsch76

Good video. I like Span for years, too but I have an issue with it. And that's it is using much CPU power on my laptop. I don't know if it is maybe the graffics from the FTT spectrum or the calculation itself... I discovered that my laptop instantly speeds up when within span I "bypass" the spectrum analyser and just use level metering. So I guess it is not because of the level measurements, but the FTT maybe.
Did you have performance problems with it? (to be axact: Span runs perfectly but slows down other plugins for example the Pulsar1178. When Span is bypassed Pulsar1178 runs smooth instantly). Here I had 1178 on a track, while Span was on Masterbus.

You need to either get some racks or fit reasonably sized feet to your outboard gear - those three stacked outboard units are cooking themselves to death. The MPX has 6 valves (tubes) in it - you gotta let the heat out.

Chris...terrific Vid. As I own Sonible software, True balance, Smart: EQ, etc, wouldit still be beneficial to insert Span (which I already have...have to update...) in Cubase 13 Control room? Thanks much!

  • @iam-music

Span was great for me for a long time....
Supervision takes a while to get around but as soon as they added MS overlay, SPAN was gone
PRISM by TDR is a very diff alternative as well
    Thanks Chris!

  • @LondonSteveLee

It's a shame Steinberg still haven't put the focused listen feature into Frequency - the only thing stopping it being by #1 EQ. Ozone 11 EQ is free - that has the focused listen feature.

Great plug-in, but not quite what I need. I need something that goes supersonic, 20KHz to 1MHz would be great. All of the RF units I see are too high, and the audio, too low. I seem to remember a unit that was great for the low frequencies, but my memory has lost the data.
WOW! After watching more of the video, it looks like you could use this as an audio filter to tune into one narrow band of audio to listen to one radio Morse code signal! I am making a note to add this to my Ham radio software! I think I may need this after all!
