What I really like in this song is that none of it's inherent sadness and longing can be found in the lyrics. She's describing a completely average day. The pain is all in the music.

Frida’s backing vocals are sung almost like opera. Very haunting and beautiful.

Frida is often overlooked, but I think she is one of the best vocalists who ever lived. She just happened to be in a group with Agnetha, who just has that magic about her that not many singers have. It's the ability to convey emotion through singing. Not many singers can do that effectively every time. Agnetha and Karen Carpenter are the only ones who were perfect at it.

@@SpaceCattttt I guess it's the power of art. The lyrics are very down to earth. But, and I don't know why, the whole song makes me wanna sob uncontrollably. It's as if I have a premonition something terrible is about to happen. But at the same time it's so beautiful. Ouf, I said it.

They are almost always dark. The melody is darker in this one... A lot of people still think that "The Winner takes it all" is a happy song about winning. So it's good to hear that you listen to the text. The guy in the video is Jonas Bergström (born 11 May 1946) a Swedish actor. He has appeared in more than 30 films and television shows. Still alive today. This is when I realised how old this but still feels so NEW!

This song really captures the bittersweet aspects of meeting someone / losing someone. Having your life changed by another person etc.

  • @synchronicityman9062

'The latest one by Marilyn French' at the time was a novel about two strangers who meet on a train, have an instant attraction to eachother, and embark on a passionate, but ultimately ill-fated relationship. Food for thought, eh? The song does NOT have a happy ending, as many people think. Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha have all admitted this, and that's what the haunting music is hinting at- now, the protagonist KNOWS that her life is meaningless and empty, whereas before she was oblivious to this. And, FYI, the haunting wails over the instrumental are actually Frida doing her operatic vocals. This was the last recording that ABBA ever made, and Agnetha recorded her vocals alone in the dark. When she had finished, she hung up her headphones and left the building. The sound engineer has remarked that he knew then that this was the end of ABBA.

I almost felt like it was a movie without seeing the video. How sad ,in a way, that she sang it alone in the dark. And that the haunting voice in the back is Frida (I didn't know that either)

it's their masterpiece - a love song, that sounds completely depressing, no chorus and a complete contradiction. Abba were experimenting with more theatrical styles at this end point. There are lots of theories what it's about. It's a women describing her monotonous life before she meets someone (if that's the case, why isn't she happy) Wikipedia also has theories that she's dead, that's why she sounds unhappy - the person she met is a murderer. It's a strange song open to interpretation. Apparently there were lots of problems and discussions about how it would be sung and approached vocally in the studio.

So glad you finally got to this song, this is in my ABBA top 3. It's the last song they ever recorded (until recently), back in 1982. You can tell in the music video how separated they are. A shame, because it's so beautiful: the synth, the beat, the lyrics, Agnetha's vocals and Frida to top it off with her operetta voice. It makes you wonder what they could've done in the 80s. Also, Agnetha would've been a fine actress.

To understand ABBA music you need to understand the musical tradition where they - and particularly Benny - come from. Find and listen to "Arrival" in the original version. Not many comments are necessary, just absorb the feeling. There are many covers, also by massed military bands. It says something about the width of their music, the appreciation they meet and have med from fellow musicians and from so many music loving people

Bjørn and Benny got Agnetha to act the part of the person in that song, as opposed to singing it objectively.A "downside" of this creative choice meant Agnetha sang like an "ordinary woman" rather than a lead vocalist. The three ABBA members involved in this decision have all retrospectively wondered if "the dramatic scope would have been far greater had Agnetha's natural instincts been allowed to take hold". This is often cited as the reason Agnetha's vocals reveal much more of her Swedish accent than usual, as she is essentially talk-singing the lyrics. (Ok, I found this on Wiki).

You MUST listen and react to "Like an angel passing through my room" !!! Sung by Frida - the darkhaired - and only her. A stunning ballad with a minimalistic sound - and her voice at its best! She sounds almost like an operasinger - and actually she can sing opera! And another must Abba song is "The Visitors" also from their last album - a very different Abba song - ahead of its time and about the fear of the Cold War and SovjetUnion in the early 80`s! Also sung by Frida. (My favorite)
By the way - did you know that the bass-riff form "The name of the game" was sampled by The Fugees in "Rumble in the jungle, after permission of Abba. And the only other artist to do a sample was Madonna - where she wrote a letter and send a tape to Benny and Björn og Abba and asked if she could use the synthesizer part og "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme - A man after midnight"! And they thougt it was so good and the rest is history. Hung Up was a HUGE hit for Madonna!
The last thing I will tell you about, is that Abba was in the studio in 2018 and recorded 2 - maybe more - new songs, after a 36 years break! The 2 songs will be released this year, we hope - together with a video created by Simon Fuller, showing Abba as they were in 1979 as Avatars - socalled "ABBATARS" ;-) sining the new songs. Abba area all now in their 70´s - so they will not apear themselves. And maybe the Abbatars will do a concert tour after the release of the video of the songs, with a live band! But nothing is sure as of now! We hope for the best!

    I waited years and years
for a reaction of this song.
    I thought it'll never be
    without knowing I was wrong.
    Clicking through the channels
    hoping for the greatest show.
    There was no hope left
the day before I saw your fabulous video!

This was Agnetha's last song with ABBA. The sound engineer said she sang it alone and in the dark. After she finished she removed the headphones and walked out. He said he knew then ABBA was over. If you like Agnetha you should check out her `My colouring book` CD. It's mostly her covers of songs she grew up with. It's great because it focuses on her vocals and not production tricks. If you want one to react to my pick would be `What now my love`. She turned 70 yesterday.

Such a beautifil song; music, lyrics and video (and of course Agnetha!). I think it was their last song before their reunion recently.. Your emotional reaction says it all! I wish you all luck, here from Abbas homeland Sweden!

this was the last song they made. both couples had been divorced by that time, and both that and their huge success left them exhausted. Think about ending up making one of the best tracks. Fantastic.

I think you'll enjoy their final hit (and music video)....."Under Attack".
Especially the end sequence where they all walk away......It signified the end of the group.

Great writing! Had researched ABBA earlier today. Thanks you and hurray for speaking to a school class. Such is a fabulous idea. Was sad reading stores selling musical instruments are going out of business cause technology takes over. Hopefully learning music won't go into oblivion.

I remember this charting back in the day and seeing the video on tv ... I remember how amazing agnetha looked in this video and was shocked at how rough Frida looked. Even back in 1982 her style was not working for her and this red crop back cut was so not her !! But alas looking back “ so 1980s “ !
