I'm Swedish. I can talk like they do, but learning English in school, we were always strongly encouraged
to drop any sort of accent we may have had. I'm sure ABBA tried ther best to sound as English or American
as they could, but they weren't successful in the end. But you like it! I've always been rather embarrassed
about it. And moving abroad, it was the first thing I got rid of.

@@briann7495 Being Swedish, I'm biased, but I personally think they were greater than the Beatles. Which you'll no doubt disagree with. Still, I'm surprised they're still being played in America. The American market proved to be the most resistant to their charms at the time. Only a couple of top 10 hits. Compare that with the UK, where they had 9 numbers ones and 19 top 10's...

I love the expressions on his face. It’s like he’s listening to music from another planet. Meaning it’s so absolutely different from any music he’s heard before it’s completely alien. That’s so wonderful. 🙂. I don’t listen to too much modern pop but I’ve heard various composers describe the modern era of pop as the death of melody and ABBA is about as rich in melody as you can get. They are also the masters of harmony which is always chill inducing. This song in particular falls into the, try not to tap your foot challenge, category.

I loved there songs even back to the first time I heard them in 1974 when Waterloo came on the radio I didn't remember there name but the DJ. said it was 2 lovely or beautiful girls from Sweden I cant remember which word he used. then in the next couple of years I would here and like them but didn't know who it was singing . in about 1978 public television played an ABBA concert I then became a fan I was so impressed. and this song you just played was and probably is my favorite . I suspected that I might be ridiculed a little back in high school for listening to ABBA I didn't really hide it either. Its very nice to read the comments here and to here your comments that we all share a great appreciation for this talented group.

    Cool! 😃✨👌🏻
Hi JBLETHAL... I'm Australian, and have been an ABBA fan since I was 11 in 1976. I haven't had a chance to see a lot of what others have written here, but I just wish to say that I always love seeing people discover (and then like/love) ABBA. No doubt, someone here's mentioned that the group is Swedish, and *very* popular in the 1970s especially in Australia from 1975 to 1977, when 'ABBAmania' was definitely comparable to the 'Beatlemania' of the 1960s (officially working together as ABBA form 1972 to 1982 - and recently for some new songs; originally planned for a CGI touring-project that fans have called ‘ABBAtars’), as well as giving you some other contexts.
ABBA weren't 'as' successful originally in the USA (per capita, when compared with the rest of the world that had access to their music at the time [ie: there were limited numbers of sales of ABBA music in communist countries/territories during that time], although, ABBA did sell fairly well in the US). A revival of ABBA interest started around the late 1980s (back then, with a sort of a 'trendy underdog status in some areas), then from the early 1990s, a mainstream revival started - and has ebbed and flowed ever since. However, it wasn't until a musical called 'Mamma Mia' (which uses ABBA songs throughout) started in theatre in London in 1999, that started the ball rolling for a 'delayed' amazingly sizable-popularity of ABBA to start in USA from 2001, when 'Mamma Mia' started on Broadway, New York, in 2001; then became a movie, released in 2008 - starring Meryl Streep (amongst many others).
They toured Scandinavia, Europe, Australia, Canada, USA and Japan (mainly 1973, 1975, 1977 and 1979/1980), but as each of ABBA individually got most of the 'touring-bug' out of their systems in the 1960s (Frida, with the red hair, sung in jazz bands from her teenage years; blonde Agnetha wrote and sung pop; Benny [the bearded one {for most of the time …lol].] played, wrote and sang in a rock group called the Hep Stars; and Björn did similar in a folk group called the Hootenanny Singers), so they toured comparatively little as ABBA in the 1970s, because they preferred to be a 'studio group' so they could spend more time to concentrate on the craft of writing songs, experimenting with different genres, and producing all in the studio.
Benny Andresson wrote most of the music; Björn Ulvaeus wrote most of the lyrics; Frida (Anni-Frid) Ruess (nee Lyngstad) is a mezzo-soprano; Agnetha is a soprano (and co-wrote two songs for ABBA: ‘Disillusion’ and ‘I’m Still Alive’); their first manager (the late Stig Anderson) helped write some earlier lyrics and gave some earlier song titles. Neither Benny nor Björn can read music, are self-taught (thus would not necessarily be influenced by the strictures that can come through formal musical instruction), and are influenced by many musical genres. Benny & Björn produced their albums with engineer Michael B. Tretow; plus Benny & Björn valued and included Frida & Agnetha’s input into ABBA’s music as they all crafted the songs together in the studios.
I'm sorry I've waffled (hahaha), but as I said: I love seeing people discover ABBA ...lol. Here are some good sites to find out more about ABBA...
    • There’s an official RUclips page (with ‘Dancing Queen’; of which I’m assuming you may also have heard in these comments, and was ABBA’s *only* number 1 in USA, but was one of many number 1’s for ABBA in other countries/territories): ruclips.net/channel/UCYPs4y5esNqx6ax1CxZws6Q
    • One of the best long-running sites for accurate fannish information, plus accurate lyrics: ‘ABBA Omnibus’: www.abbaomnibus.net
    • ABBA’s official website, called ‘ABBA the Site’: abbasite.com
    • ABBA’s official museum in Stockholm, Sweden (‘ABBA the Museum’): www.abbathemuseum.com/en/

I grew up listening to ABBA; and all the 70’s music is the best! The writing talent of ABBA, the beauty and charm of the women, and perfect blend of their pure voices all come together to make the most quintessential pop music ever.

You gotta understand JB, most people don't feel much other than a beat. I've been in music and production for a looong time. It's always amazing how unmusical most are. I had a great painter in my studio one day and just for fun I changed the key of the piano part. Obviously it sounded terrible but she couldn't hear the difference. You have a great ear, a sensitive musical palate. Be thankful. It's why people like me watch you. You get it. You validate what we know.

The sad thing at the time was this band were disrespected by music critics and their peers.
Only now are they are being truly appreciated.

Three songs of Abba that always remind me of three particular points of my childhood for some reason: Fernando, Andante Andante and Happy New Year.

Those girls could sing!!!! And draw out any emotion!!!! Chiquitita is unique because it is one of the few pop songs with 4 distinct melodies. Listen carefully.

Don't even try and climb out of the ABBA hole. It's a glorious place to be, a place I have been since I was 10 years old. And if you love this song, then you will love Fernanda, Knowing Me Knowing You, The Winner Takes It All, My Love My Life, and Why Did It Have To Be Me. You'll get those chills from everyone of these songs.

I have been hearing this song for years but never really noticed the Spanish theme. I also send that the song has some dark undertones. This is why I love watching you react. You make me pay attention to songs I have listened to for ages.

Abba was HUGE in the 70's. Such a great band. I think you'd love SOS. And did you know that neither one of the girls spoke English. Their manager wanted them to start singing in English so they could get into a bigger audience. So they both learned English and the rest is history.

Don't worry mate, we all had huge crushes on Agnetha and Frida, back in the day. Swedish band singing in English about a Spanish theme. Now THAT's talent.

The harmonies of the two women are on a par with the Carpenters. The boy's music output is up there with McCarthy/'Lenon. Try 'Hole in your Soul' & 'Honey Honey'
