The Garifuna Collective's album Ayó is a soul-stirring collection of songs inspired by their unique Afro-Amerindian cultural heritage. With a lineup that consists of the best musicians in the fertile Garifuna music scene of Belize, Honduras and Guatemala, The Garifuna Collective promises to carry the torch of cultural preservation and promotion passed on by their late front man Andy Palacio far into the future. The Garifuna Collective's songs of heartbreak, hope and joy will move your body and your soul.
The director of the video for "Ubóu" recalls the conditions of the shoot. "That morning of May 24, The Garifuna Collective was rehearsing in a beautiful set up not far from my home, an old, typical Caribbean wooden house that has now been converted into a cool venue, a sort of cultural bar where local artists can showcase their talents. So I grabbed a pair of cameras and headed to the bar with the idea of filming them playing their new songs. We hadn't had rain for months and everyone was anxiously waiting for the rainy season to start. Just as I was getting there, rain started to pour. Humidity increased and The Collective started rehearsing. I love filming the Garifuna Collective because they don't pretend anything in front of a camera, they just are. The air fills up with their particular energy
    and magic happens."
"Ubóu" asks, "What is wrong with this world where children are dying while governments are spending financial resources to buy arms to make war? Who fights for our children?" It makes the case that we are all responsible.

    LYRICS IN ENGLISH
What is wrong with this world?
    Children are dying
    Dying of hunger/poverty
    What hurts me, my friends
Governments are buying arms to wage war Let's give a hand
We know not when we will be in need When we will be helpless

So happy that I was exposed to the Garifuna culture when I went to Belize in 2008. Africa is everywhere! Hello to everyone I met in Dangriga and Sittee River.

liquidhot9 the garifunas are only half African
      The other half is Arawakan
Also the language is for the most part Arawakan and in terms of phonetics, it has a lot of African sounding syllables and sounds. So they aren't really Africa but one of the native and indigenous people of the Caribbean and Central America.

One of my top goals for when I do my web series abroad: Visit the Garifuna people. I had a friend in high school who is of Garifuna. She was shocked that I knew her culture, her people. By the way, a good feel music. :)
