+willzer808 There's an excellent double dvd available from the Bfi called "Early Cinema: Primitives and Pioneers". This film is included along with many others from 1895-1910.
Trax-3 I'll have to look into it. I would never have guessed that an industry standard 35mm would have already existed in 1899. But I'm speaking out of ignorance with this, so I'll just stop and check
For some reason, footage from this era is usually shown digitaly at a 480p resolution which significantly reduces the detail. Even a 9.5mm print can be effectively scanned in 1080p
Of course it is clear. All the information is there in a 35 mm print (16 mm came much later). The image is uncompressed, a resolution equivalent of probably 6K. 35 was used from the beginning, it became standard around 1905. Bad resolution on RUclips is usually because of the up-loader. A bad VHS-print in 480p is still a bad VHS print. You can't improve the image by using a higher resolution, the information is gone forever. You can rely on BFI to use the best methods.
Not to discredit BFI, but you said it yourself...the quality of the uncompressed source on the bigger format is the key here, not the processing. Sometimes I wonder if the digitalisation of things (which look great now) will look artificial in the future and we wished we hadn't compressed things so much.
Shillamill tunnel between Tavistock and Bere Alston, out of use since 1968 but maybe used again in the future. Infamous for some rather more explicit explorations than those shown in the film involving the more mature pupils returning home from Tavistock school
This is such a beautiful video. Right at the beginning of the film industry, set in the Victorian Era and showcasing the most powerful and beautiful gift we have - Love. No war, hate or violence like today's films. Just a beautiful example of the love between a man and a woman. That's what we all need - Love. It's the only thing that will move us forward as a species and civilization and the only thing that will save us.
I wonder where that couple that was kissing is living at now. That must’ve been a scandal back then. I want to ask them if that took a lot of courage to film that scene.
If this was real how is it that it's so clear and crisp with sound and yet silent films which came much later can hardly be made out at all very fuzzy blurry etc. Can't wait for someone to answer that question. Hmm??
Pretty sure they were already a couple. And the whole point of the clip was that they had to wait for the tunnel to take the opportunity to kiss, in those days it was considered improper even for couples to kiss in public.
ya i kissed my wife in a train and now im in jail :/ lmao some ppl need to go back to 4th grade and relearn "context clues" also pretty sure sexual assault has always been illegal but have fun ig
There was no audio back then. Titanic videos from 1912 are no where near this quality and have no sound. What they suddenly decide to stop producing videos with sound?? Fake
Obviously this audio was added recently. There was no audio on the orignal film, but since the begining of cinema silent films were not silent. When the projections were made there were musicians very often. Most of the time a single pianist or organist, or full orchestras in bigger venues. Before title card was invented there was someone who read some text out loud to the audience. In the later years machines were used for sound effects, and also pre recorded effects on disc were used. So those silents movies were never made to be played without music, hence this modern interpretation suits well the art of that time. Maybe the locomotive noise is a bit too much, but the music is just fine.
I saw a totally different version today at the Film Museum in Frankfurt. Same title, same year, same director, same story, different actors, editing and set. Does anyone have an explanation for this?!
This was the 1899 equivalent of 50 shades of grey
What a sweet scene! Actually made me go awe!
Well, the first film with a kiss in it is simply called "The Kiss" from 1896, and Thomas Edison was behind it.

Even worse than VHS source is bad VHS transfert, and this is pretty common unfortunatly.
What a lovely film!
Is this movie of 1899? A very long time ago 121 years ago it was!
125 now mate!
The initial shot going into the tunnel looks like a very hot summer’s day.

the sound is probably a later addition, and the video quality looks good because - well - this is a good copy and those you watched simply were not

Who ever made this film straight up mocking Wes Anderson.. shame on you people.
I wonder if the white spots were there from the beginning, or if they were the result of poor storage conditions, or just "natural" aging of the film.
