None of this is a surprise. No matter how good you are, 8 days to restore a basket case to perfection is just unrealistic. Chip is a class act and humble as hell.

In addition to cars, Chip Foose was into vintage American cruiser bicycles. He used to come into our bike shop in Fountain Valley pretty regularly because we had a lot of old, obscure parts and a lot of knowledge. We were the only shop that could rebuild an old Bendix 2 speed "kickback" hub. Chip is one of the nicest, genuine and humble human beings I have ever met. And all the commenters are right. You simply can't do a custom rebuild on a car, often in just crap condition, in 8 days. Good paint jobs take longer than that!

One thing that I loved was that Chip was always alongside his crew cranking wrenches and swinging hammers. Most of the other hosts rarely ever got their hands dirty except for Jessie James on Monster Garage, whenever his welding skills were needed he jumped right in.

I was approached once, to rebuild my car, by one of the shows (not Overhaulin’). They wanted me to pay between 20 and $25k, to supplement the income the show would get from sponsors. I wish it would have been Foose, because I really enjoyed the shows, and to this day, I believe his heart was in it. I never understood the 8 day limit on the builds. I think expanding that to a month, and getting into details of the build, would have been awesome. 12 rides a year, real people with real stories, or maybe just someone Chip spotted rolling down the street, or in a garage somewhere. I have to give kudos to the build crew, they really are the A-Team, and loose screws or not, they rocked every single build. I’m a fan forever. Thanks, Chip.

Is it a winning? When lawyers work pro-bono its viewed more like community service or charity - a defendant does not get a $300k tax bill for a lawyers time equivalence of $1M, do they? The poor would be permantly screwed, just like India. In that light, if time and materials get DONATED to a car build [with the idea of product exposure producing cash elsewhere at a separate time with different parties] then... the notion of value changing for the featured car gets proven how? Like Wapner used to say week in, week out: show me the papers.

I was a fan of the show. Then I found out a high school buddy had his car "Overhauled". It was the black Mustang fastback. My friend is a quad and was during the overhaul. He had been working on the car for years but being a quad made for a long haul. He still has the car and it breaks my heart to hear of his disappointment of how a lot of things weren't done right and when I saw it there were some paint defects and signs of rust on what would have been a gorgeous car. He's been in failing health for a while and when we talk, it still eats at him at how the car was not done well. I think Foose does fine work, but that show was not representative of good quality.

You had to have money in order to keep an overhauled car. The IRS charged a gift tax with a fairly high rate. Many sold theirs because they simply couldn’t afford to keep it. Plus then overhauled cars were not practical enough to use as daily drivers. If you don’t have money, you’re only going to be able to afford an economical daily driver.

I live on the other side of the pond and did have family involved in motor vehicle body repairs etc so I had some idea in what it takes to strip and rebuild a car. No one in his right mind can do it in 8 days. I failed to understand the 8 day rule from the start. It can take more than that just to do a decent paint job and it has to be left to cure and harden before completing the build otherwise the paintwork would be ruined. As for $50 in costs to do a quality rebuild it's got to be at least twice that. Just look at the man hours involved and those workmen have to be paid a decent wage.

I had never heard of the show until the 1967 Dodge Coronet episode. Selfish? Possibly. But. I have a 67 Coronet 2dr hardtop that I bought from my older brother just before the 1st Gulf War.He was a new soldier in the army.He saved it from the crusher and rebuilt it. This was done at the auto craft center on post. It had a 318 that was swapped out for a 340.The body damage and paint was all repaired or replaced. I joined the army immediately afterwards and was shipped off to Iraq. While there,The block cracked and the hail beat it up pretty bad. I followed my brothers footsteps and "OVERHAULED" it again with the addition of a modded 440/727 setup at the same auto craft shop. A privates pay didn't allow for much more than I was able to put into it. My younger brother told me about the episode and I drooled so bad. This would have been a dream come true. I sat down and tallied up the cost of parts that we were shown and that was so far out of my budget. I use to joke with everyone about a possible "VERSION 2" and having my older brother write the show and present the idea. I knew there wasn't a chance in hell but, one could dream. I still have the car up on blocks taking up 1/2 of my garage with a stack of NOS parts to clone the R/T (ie. Speedo cluster, seats, emblems, gauges, etc). My 100%disabled vet butt will never sell the car but, doubt I will ever get it back on the road/track like I wish . Selfish to wish that lucky person was me, Absolutely yes. To sell it like others did their gifts would be ridiculous. I now have the money to pay the taxes,It's the physical ability that I lack. Don't get it twisted. I would spend every moment that I could in pain to be a part of it's rebirth. I see why women go through hell to bring children into this world. I know it's not the same but, I do love this car.

My 70 Buick GS455 convertible would've taken them more than 8 days to rebuilt. I bought that basket case around 1997. The GSx was my dream car but, reality dictates that I'll never own one so, the GS fell on my radar. Being a convertible, made it more interesting so, the Hemi killer MIGHT one day, see the roads again. I'm not getting younger so, let's be realist and try not to hold my breath about it. Thumb's-up to the show and to the crew.

  • @neorev01

8 days is not enough time to do anything. Shops ive worked at took a minimum of 6 months to restore a car if it was a popular model and easy to get parts for but could take 2 years if it was something really special and rare.
Custom builds usually take a long time since so much of the car has to be custom made.
They are right about the fabricated tension. I was on a few episodes of a reality tv show on the discovery channel. When i saw it on tv for the first time, i was surprised at the completely fabricated storyline. I have to admit that it did make the show more interesting. A shop where everyone works together well is boring to watch
I did meet Chip Foose once when he came into the shop i worked at. Very nice guy, very down to earth and quite likeable.

Some states only tax the "book" value of the year model but MANY, ESPECIALLY California, tax the APPRAISED value AFTER restoration or major modification or the INSURED value...whichever is HIGHER. What proved to me they were a bunch of knucle heads , is the episode thet involved a 66 Ford GTA. ORIGINAL. they redid the inside of the trunk, removed the factory jack instruction stickers. And topped the custom narrowed front bumper with trailer marker lites for the park lites . As an automotive purist , i would have been pissed. A friend in L.A. had his car done. Had extensive milding and filler work done , after a year ,and the paint curing, you could see every place the the filler had been applied. It started falling apart.

After six days of worried calls to local law enforcement, tow lots and scrap yards, I get a call saying that it has been taken to Chip Foose for an overhaul.
