Building Rabbit Cages for About $15

  • After considering several alternatives, we decided to build 2' x 2' rabbit cages out of 1" x 2" welded wire. Cost for each cage was about $15. We built six cages and constructed a wood frame to hold them. The rabbitry is in the chicken coop, where the rabbits will stay warm and dry during the winter.
    Some have asked about the plastic pans under the cage. We get them from Rural King for about $8 for the 24"x24". They are also sold in 30"x30" and 30"x36" sizes. Here is the link for the 24"x24": www.ruralking....

    I’m glad you put arrows pointing to the chicken, otherwise I would’ve thought your name was chicken

    I used to live that close to a train crossing. After about 2 months, we never noticed the trains. I noticed that you don't either! God Bless you, be safe!

    Thank you for making such an informative video. You folks are awesome. I love the chicken coop you have as well.

    We had to mount our pee guard on the outside. Inside the cage they tend to nibble it away.

    I'm going to build a couple of 'carry crates' for chickens, and I'll use welded wire as you do...just a bit different size. Thanks for showing how!!!

    Do the rabbits not chew on the siding?

    • @HappyWifeAcres
      @HappyWifeAcres  Год назад

      Some do. but it's not a big issue. They get sticks to chew on. Currently, they are only in the cages to give birth. Otherwise, we house them outdoors in much larger pens, even in winter.

      We have rabbit tractors outside. In the warm months, they get some outside time. They are all for meat. We have 2 silver fox does and a silver fox buck. We have 2 other does that are Dutch and Dutch mix. Those are our best breeders. The grow outs occupy the tractors until processing day. We love eating rabbit.

    I bought wire but its 36 tall how will i do it to the 20 x 24 x 24

    • @HappyWifeAcres
      @HappyWifeAcres  2 года назад

      You would have to cut it. But honestly, if I did it all over again, I would make 36" wide cages. They can still be 24" tall. Use 8 ft of length to make the "tube". Then cut two pieces 24"x24" for the ends and attach with J clips. Cut door. If you want 24" wide cages, then I suggest getting 24" wide wire. Otherwise you'll spend all your time cutting. Good luck!

    Sir i would like to tell u that if the cage is like that the rabbit's could get its feet hurt

    • @HappyWifeAcres

      xxBTS FOREVERxx Wire cages are standard for many rabbit owners. We give our rabbits boards to stand on, but they don’t use them much. We check their hocks regularly, but have never had issues with sore feet. In warmer months, grow-outs go in cages on the grass. We treat our rabbits very well. Thanks for the comment though!

    Wouldn't you want the entire floor to be 1/2"X1/2"?

    • @HappyWifeAcres
      @HappyWifeAcres  2 года назад +1

      We initially had 1/2x1/2 on the floor but the poop doesn’t fall thru very well. 1x1/2 works great.

      Sir Michael Sanders these cages don’t even meet MINIMUM size requirements to keep rabbits not even mentioning the materials and design of the cage. If you think that’s an acceptable cage or worst of all even have your own rabbits in one similar I’m afraid it’s you who needs to educate themselves on rabbits! Google RWAF

      Im up to a bit over 300 raised in such cages and not a single issue with feet.
      I would, however make the cages a bit bigger. By the time you get a nest box and a litter of kits in there ... it's tight.
      We to 36" wide by 30" deep by 24" tall and that works out great.
      The smaller's not gonna kill 'em. It just gets tight for space.
